The Corrupt and Caught World Cup. They must've paid millions in backroom deals to get the WC. I mean to allow disruption of the season of major European football leagues all to give the WC to a country with a population of 2.5 million all in the name of the "development of the game." That is BS! FIFA liked the smell and feel of money and Qatar had lots of it. Along with lots of human rights violations. Hope they dedicate some of those games to the migrant workers that died.

They paid many many millions. They had to bribe a lot of delegates to get this over the line. These oil nations believe they can buy everything and have no moral issue with corruption. The corrupt Blatter was never going to get in the way of Qatar. Qatar even buys its players from other countries. They've set up a football school and scout for young talented players in mostly impoverished countries to bring them into that school to qualify playing for Qatar. They simply have no shame and couldn't care how many non-nationals pay the ultimate price, as long as they get what they want. There isn't one good reason why Qatar should have been awarded these World Cup finals, but here we are.

I have mixed feelings about the 2022 World Cup. I believe FIFA needs to give chance to others. It can’t be Brazil, Germany, Argentina all the time.. So I’m happy they gave Qatar a chance.
However, Qatar’s abuse towards migrant workers will forever tarnish this FIFA edition. These stadiums will go down in the history books as modern-day pyramids/Taj Mahals, except that no royalties are buried here but laborers. I’m sad that it needs to come down to this & FIFA can’t do anything about it. The corruption of FIFA has been questionable since the 2018 edition in Russia. It seems that they leveled up on that mistake for 2022.

Besides, while the 'sour grapes' whining U S of A's conflict-of-interest laden( funny how nobody on the mainstream brought such a glaringly-obvious thing up - almost as if "jUsTiCe" is not what they're actually after!) indictment/prosecution of "small fishes" had no direct-relation to Qatar, nor they did beyond rumourmongering of copaganda-glorified Sherlock®-ian deduction of "we believe", but the US-dominated international press wasn't content with simply _that._
They exploited that ambiguity in the “we believe..” part and found an even-newer hatchet-job on the Qatarīs, "@@Faranzo14".
      On the other hand..
As the tabloid papers( yes, them! Since there's no distinction between newsgathering for them and rest of newsgathering doctrine when it comes to practice across Africa & West Asia*, the most) originally reported that higher-ups linked to Qatar's bid were charged by the Swiss authorities - this was also immediately pounced-upon by the rest of mainstream media, let alone sports-journalism where standards are only notch above showbiz-journalism. But all of them finally got acquitted by the relevant Swiss court-of-law, there was not even a single-letter reporting on it by the press. Bet unless you read tabloids and then research, you must've never heard of it[ till this reply], eh?

In Qatar, government projects are awarded to big contractors - mostly managed by foreigners. They hire workers from overseas through agencies in south East Asian countries. The agency takes fees from the companies/contractors. As a result contractors expect the workers to not work elsewhere once the workers arrive in Qatar.
The government cannot control every single recruitment happening in the private sector - which is run by foreigners themselves.
For decades, workers have been coming to Qatar from south east Asia willingly (nobody forces them on planes). The workers know that conditions in their countries (and in Europe) are worse than in Qatar.

I cant say that all about Qatar is bad or true but something that will be certain is that the current russia Ukraine war came in a perfect time for them, it has stop states from tackling the issue and shut up because they are in need of the gas and oil of this nation as its one of the only alternatives after Russia. The war will pay fully for this world cup and the money will come from the countries that are supposed to be against violation of human rights as they cant risk to lose a supplier.

the comment section here is intriguing. But whatever you feel about corruption, values, deaths etc...the fact remains several of the worlds top leagues had to make huge changes just to accomodate it, meaning it shouldn't have been considered in the first place. They had to build 7 of the 8 stadiums exclusively for it. It has no football history, it has less than half the populatio of greater London, and no matter what they are trying to do the have a recent history of mysgony and intolerance. No major sporting event should touch this nation

It is interesting to read about all these comments about abuse of workers in Qatar as if the West is holy in treating workers. Australia treated and continues to treat the Aboriginals inhumanely. As an American, I know White Americans continues to take away and/destroy the little land the Native Americans have with their corporations, and a lot of Americans are surviving paycheck to paycheck. Countries in Europe are better off because of colonialism/imperialism. I am not condoning what Qatar is doing. I am saying Social Justice needs to be pursued everywhere. Please pick up a sociology and an anthropology book and educate yourself, and then we can all have meaningful and honest conversation about improving as humans.

      I agree
As someone who has lived in Kuwait as well as Qatar, both countries being quite similar, it does feel like people are hating on Qatar for the simple fact that it is a Middle Eastern country with 'regressive' ideals.
I understand the issue of poor treatment of migrant workers and that undoubtedly should be looked into, as well as whatever alleged corruption has being going on behind FIFA's closed doors.
But to those who pretend that Qatar is a terrible choice simply because it forced the committee to conduct a winter world cup, let me tell you, summers in these countries are intolerable and consistently record the highest temperatures on earth every year. It will be a human rights violation to even let people play in that heat. Besides, it's the world cup, and the western world should realise that other countries should be accommodated into that title as well.
Secondly, I disagree with these claims of Qatar's poor treatment of women. Qatar is not Saudi Arabia. Women have a lot of freedom and privilege that for some reason the west chooses to ignore simply because these women also wear abayas and headscarfs. It's a community with strong familial and spiritual values. People of the East look at the West and wonder how entire countries can condone young children undergoing sex change surgeries and parents undergoing abortion simply because they are not ready to have children. These don't sound like progressive values to us. So instead of making this bigger than what it actually is, I think everyone should think twice to what their own cultures and own countries truly partake in before pointing fingers at others. You can have the next world cup. Cheers.

Disappointing to see a major news organization do such a terrible job. I'm an expat living in Qatar, and see quite a different perspective. They seem to have done no research, just recycled numbers from various different organizations. For instance, on cost: they briefly mention the 6 bn or so for the stadia, which is probably about right. Pretty much everything else they discuss are projects that already needed to happen in the country (Metro, etc.). Falsely state the Lusail is "only built for the World Cup." I'm sure the WC was an impetus, but it is a vibrant city full of real businesses and people living there, hardly just built for the WC. Also, fail to mention that Qatar was always committed to doing the WC during the usual schedule in the summer, promising to bring in air conditioned stadia. The stadia have indeed incorporated this technology, though I've not doubt it will be a more pleasant experience for players and visitors to be here in the winter. The numbers on migrant deaths are also massively inflated (assuming every expat who dies in the country was due to working on WC projects).

Within ten years, the total number of accidents for workers in Qatar is not less than what happens in any European country, but the Western media exaggerates the numbers, as it took the total number of deaths, including those unrelated to work in the facilities. This is all the hatred and jealousy of a small Arab Muslim country that organizes an event like this

  • @nicholascowling7052

I wonder how aware of things in Qatar Beckham really was. I agree with what he's saying about the importance of having different hosts, but I wonder if it was a case of the wool being pulled over his eyes, or him selling out. As the games start and more and more publicity surrounds the human rights issues, it will be interested to see if Beckham changes his tune. Also... it's a shame that Fifa is what it is... I'm surprised that teams or individuals are not boycotting the games... I feel like there's enough personal star power among some of these players that if they decided to put up a stink and try to fight the corruption, something would actually get done. I'm also wondering if we are beginning to see the social downfall of Ronaldo and if he in turn will act as a spokesman against all the corruption.

      @Jopa955 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Its easy to respect an culture that is developed and in the frames of 2022. Qatars culture is in the frames of last century Europe. As long as I dont see many people waiting to work for Qatar while our EU embassyies are full in line I cant say that the respect of cultural values can work. In Europe an foreginer can be almost everything even president of the sate, Qatar, an LGBTQ couble cant be in the same hotel room, and if you tell me that in Qatar there is no homosexuals, wtf. So yea, ritch people from Qatar love to come to Europe, they can do whatever they want, rich folks from Europe, what can they do in Qatar? Begg for a beer... Football is an sport for the 21. century, Qatar has no tradition in the sport, and thats why we see them not understanding why no beer on stadium is so horrible. I could noot book a hotel room in Qatar, cus me and mine GF are not married, so when u people say respect the culture, please first try to book something for the World cup.
