  • *Whoops! Please ignore the intro where Travis references a raw water pump - He meant to say FRESH water pump!
As cruisers on a budget, we're always looking to DIY as much as we can. Here's how we changed the FRESH water pump on our Yanmar 4JHTE Diesel Motor.

After watching your video I have to retract all my comments about Millennials being doomed to extinction. You are actually pretty good on the tools. Not Boomer good, but certainly not Millennial bad.

Haha give travis about 30 years and he’ll be better than boomer good 😛

Thx u so much- ah - A Weep Hole, that shows the water pump bearings are shot/ gone- that’s what’s wrong with my Yanmar 50-2 excavator 4TN88L engine, 1989- 1998 digger 🙏 Thank You !

Great video guys. Only recently found your channel, been doing a binge watching a few videos each day over the last few days.
Good tip leaving on the belt to help cracking loose the water pulley bolts, will remember that one.

Great episodes so far! Really good cinematography! Great content! Just enough humorous moments! Love the little trips to town! I’m enjoying the Canadian way!

You should look at changing the pulleys out to serpentine , no belt dust , less wear on bearings as the belt doesn't have to be as tight , stays tight ( no readjusting ) and your setup to go to a larger alternator later on.
Elecromaxx in Canada. I have seen 4 boats in the last 2 years where v belt broke engine overheated , when they needed the engine the most ( safety) They claim you will never change it and they give you an extra belt

Nice work. You know what you are doing.
A rebuild is way cheaper than a replacement, and often the original factory units were much better than the aftermarket units that come from China today. I would send the old pump out and have it rebuilt, you may never need it but if the new one ever fails you'll have a fresh spare ready to go.
We have a spare fresh water pump, raw water pump, alternator, and starter. Having a rebuild spare ready to go is peace of mind, especially once ypu leave the country.
I hope you guys are hunkered down somewhere safe for this crap weather. We made it to Swansburo by two and chickened out going to Mile Hammock in camp lejune as it was getting pretty windy. Tomorrow may be better, but not nice enough to go down the Cape Fear River. I hope you got past that before it got snotty yesterday.

      Thanks!
We got a new Yanmar fresh water pump but will definitely keep the old one, rebuild it for a spare.
We are definitely learning the importance of having spares!
Yes we’ve stayed put for the past few days and are waiting for a weather window to go around the outside the Charleston. Was a good idea for you guys to stay put in Swansboro - we personally did not enjoy the stretch to mile hammock bay lol - video coming soon on that ordeal!

Last year we had an air bubble in our water cooled turbocharger and could not get in to bled properly. Overheated twice at that military bridge waiting for it to open.
Each time it opened it would overheat, actually, just as we were approaching it, with boats behind us. The bridge operator was not amused.
Then it happened again at that tricky corner right before before mile hammock and had to drop the hook right on the Bobtrack line in heavy current (max) while other boats were already aground nearby. What a clusterfrack.
We had left from Swansburo too, and were so bushed we ended up staying over at mile hammock even though it was not even close to noon. But we got rhe issue fixed and it never had another issue all the way down to Marathon and back up North again. I am not a fan of Volvo-Penta motors. I should have gotten a Beta!

Awesome video. Very informative. Were you always handy or did you have to learn after getting the boat?

Thanks! Travis has always been quite handy with a knack for seeing how things work, taking things apart and putting them back together. Definitely advantageous when taking on boat maintenance and repairs!

Great video, I have the same engine on my IP420 and in the process of putting the new one on and wondering if I should use RTV with pump gasket

Thanks! We didn’t use RTV. We just used a new factory gasket with the new fresh water pump

Good run through on the repair. What is your mechanical background? Many of the channels I’ve watched, mechanical (working on engines in particular) aptitude is a little less than other skills. You seem to know your way around the engine. BTW, I wouldn’t have bothered with my hands either. It must be a guy thing. 🤔

    • @SailingJibsea
      @SailingJibsea  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks! Mechanical background consists of a lot curiosity, pulling things apart, seeing how they work and then remembering how to put it all back together again lol
