  • Keeping your engine cool is critical and without the water impeller, it would soon overheat. Checking the impeller on a regular basis, and knowing how to replace it should it stop working, is a key skill for any sailor. Rubicon 3's (www.rubicon3.co.uk) Bruce Jacobs shows Matthew Sheahan how to do it.
    Yachting Monthly's How To series is brought to you in association with www.gjwdirect.com/

    Suggestion: MARK a LINE across the FACE PLATE and the ADJACENT BODY HOUSING.
    The face plate may have a slight warp to it....put it back on the EXACT same way (with the lines matching) as you originally found it.

    If you can't figure out which way to bend the blades when you are reinstalling the impeller, don't sweat it... it will fix itself within 2 rotations. Also, many of the impellers on bigger engines have threaded pullers that thread on to an embedded nut in the centre of the impeller.. it is easy to forget about this and reinstall it facing the inside (which makes the impeller puller useless when you want it)... so be sure that you install it with threads out.

    seeing all that rust around the water pump I can tell they missed a very important part and thats the water seal.I have found that seal goes way before the impeller goes and I replace it at the first signs of leakage. Also the belt should be loose just tight enough to turn excessive torque on the belt wears out the bearing and seal prematurely. I have found water pumps don't go at the dock by a yanmar dealer they go in like Dominica where the Island only has maybe one auto parts store...Although hanging out in Dominica a couple of extra weeks waiting for parts isn't the worst thing in the world its always a good idea to have an extra set of bearings and I aways have 3 extra seals.

    Great video! I'm changing the impeller on my Kubota Next-Gen Generator in my sailboat, and I'm thinking this is going to be quite doable!

    May I make one suggestion: Always carry a spare water pump impeller, gasket and drive belt in a sealed box, replace the one you use with new spares at the earliest opportunity.

    So this guy stands in the exact same spot for 13 introductions? Who the hell produced this?!? By the way, lovely mud flats, excellent choice.

    How do I identify back and front of impeller? Both sides look identical

    How much water (or in my case rtv after winter) will i expect to spill upon removing cover? Would it just be residual in the housing or can there be a complete emptying of any water that's sitting in the block above the level of the pump? Thanks in advance.

    What do you do with the inlet seawater seacock after changing the impeller? Do you simply open it back and then you start the engine? Or you need a safer procedure?

    • @otm646
      @otm646 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Just open it. The impeller should be lubricated with with a water and dish soap mixture so it can run without incoming sea water for a few seconds while the hose from the seacock thru the strainer refills.

    02:56 06:16 the difference of skewed impeller blade can be seen before and after checking. I think engines are turning reverse some angle after stopping. does it make problem to impeller blades?

    How do you tell which side of the impeller goes in? Are some types reversible? Also when I inspect my impeller I use a waterproof grease to lubricant the impeller before re inserting it. Will any grease do?

      I had the same question. I'm guessing look at the old one before you remove it. But what if the old is not there?

    Yanmar (Johnston) pump is a different animal and also hard to get at as its facing into rear of starter motor..

      It's two bolts, it comes off effortlessly and the whole pump is in your hands in 2 minutes. If the gasket comes off clean it's literally a 5 minute job start to finish at the dock.

      @@otm646 It was below the threshold of the door into cabin my Antares 710 so wasnt that easy, well first time anyway, I know now. I also had an insertion tool for the job when the old impeller was removed a worth while investment, made putting in new one a breeze.

    great channel why not have a brass impeler instead of rubbber that can break into bits and become a nightmare to find in the system ? thanks in advance. Jason

      These are positive displacement pumps, because they have to be able to draw a vacuum to prime themselves you can't use a centrifugal pump. Other positive displacement pump designs (like a gear pump) are not tolerant of any incoming debris thus unsuitable.

    For some reason Yanmar decided to make the cover plate for the water pump on my boat inaccessible without taking the entire pump off. off the engine. It’s a genuine pain.

    My engine exhausts underwater. Don't forget to close the seacock before opening the cover plate.

    No water = check impeller is silly nonsense. First thing to do is to pour 2liters into the filter, to prime the pump!

    • @mazdamaniac4643
      @mazdamaniac4643 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Jabsco pumps are designed to be self-priming. If it's operating as intended with a good impeller and housing, it pulls a vacuum through it's inlet.
      If it can't prime by itself without any assistance then you have a very serious issue that needs immediate attention.
