I am a complete cycling novice, took it up to avoid a heart attack when im 70 lol.
I have done this ride thanks to this video, i parked in Hawes, got the bike off the trailer and at 7am on a coldish summer morning started cycling. Other than i walked up more hills than i cycled, (remember im only a novice) it was possibly the best day of my life. Thanks for making the video and uploading. And yes it took me ALL DAY to do the circuit back to the car.
I think i drank the pub dry of iced water, ( i did carry 2l of tap water, that soon went mostly out me back as i sweated like a happy pig). My bike isnt anything special - cheap halfords voodoo - a shop called evans did recommend the boardman to me, im a novice lol, wasnt going to buy the best for a bike i use maybe 2 times each month.
would i do it again - yea but probably not on a hybrid voodoo lol.
Gravel - BE VERY careful, some roads had loose chippings, when cars sped past, it was like being pebble blasted, stay WELL left but keep a good eye ahead for dips etc, the roads are good quality, but the verges could be an issue when ur dodging the odd flying gravel by a car doing 60. (most hit the bike, little pings). Best nights sleep i had that night and what a day.
by 10am it was warm and sunny with views as far as u can see.

I love the fact that it's always cloudy on the spots you guys choose. I'm bald and absolutely hate to ride under the sun. Cheers from Brazil.

Brought up in Lancaster with the Lune road road club,..and found the dales by bike from 13 year old. Riding out from St Annes to Clitheroe and the big climbs is great, but you always remember the big rides from being young!

James Herriott did not live in Askrigg, a house was used in the village for the film and tv series. Alf White (James Herriott) was based in the Thirsk area whom I used to chat to on a regular basis at Thirsk auction mart. But aside from that its a fantastic riding area and if your up for it Seamer water is a good open swim.

Hi Tony, thanks for showing us your route. Have you ever done the Nik of Pendle over that way? I used to ride around there alot and I have a love/hate relationship with that climb

Is there a route I can download? From Askrigg do to head towards Oxnop scar (they'll) or do you head over towards Crackpot and Kearton? I know the rest of the route just unsure from Askrigg to Reeth, cheers.

    It's a No Brainer really.
Virtually all of the North from the A65 to the Scottish Border is great.
There are huge areas outside of The Dales that are just as good, the South Lakes, the Lune Valley and Upper Teesdale.
Another UK area that vies with the North is South Wales and some of the climbs, eg the Gospel Pass are really spectacular.
I spent many happy weekends camping at Crickhowell, with rounds of the Black mountains and Brecons.
Somerset and Devon are good areas with quiet roads and challenging hills.
Exmoor is very like the North York Moors and if you've struggled up places like Blakey Chimney, you'll be at home flogging away from Hells mouth to Exford!
I would not give twopence halfpenny for cycling in the South East!!!!
Watching the myriad of You Tube rants just proves my point.
