so, Cody, I saw a great tip for inflating those cushy airbeds. unfold your drum liner, shake it open and fill the wide mouth bag with air. gather the top of the bag like you're gonna tie it off with the air inside. Then squeeze the air out of the drum liner into the mattress. Saves a lot if wear and tear on your diaphram.

The "war stories" and side talk are valuable lessons that can make any of us safer, more productive, and more comfortable on our next deployment. Thank you for doing this series. The purpose-built logic of your packing and gear selection, and how well it's explained is awesome. Even though I'll likely never get into Wildland Firefighting, many of your gear selections and packing methods reach beyond your purposes. Ha-ha, you should of called it war bag pillow talk. You and Allen talking about y'alls pillows cracked me up.
I'm really enjoying this series. I'm not sure if you know or if its been said in the comments already, but when you need to inflate your air matress, a quick and easy way to do it is to take a plastic garbage bag, and spin it around and fill it with air, and then wrap the opening around your air matress inflater hole and just squeeze all the air from the garbage bag into your air matress. Do that as many times as you need to get the matress filled 95% and then blow it up to however firm you want it if you still need it filled more. I learned this trick back in the 80's when I was in the infantry in the military when we, on the VERY rare times, used our air matress which we called a p*ssy pad. Keep up the great work.

My uncle was in the NC forestry service and he loved going and fighting the fires. I don't know how high up he was but do know towards the end of his career he would go all over the US and was more in a role of logistics getting people and equipment where it needed to be. But seeing all this stuff reminds me of all the bags and stuff he has.
These are awesome little series. Would love to see more of them. Stuff like a detailed view of what you keep in your truck packs. Things like what you keep around the homestead. Just a bit of everything
I am totally with Cody on the heat regulation with the feet, i personally use a quilt with a gathered adjustable closure end and a closure for the bottom 18 inches or so length wise. it has many ways of helping with thermo-regulation.
I feel like a little kid waiting on something to arrive in the mail when checking for the last couple videos to come up on here. This series of videos is awesome! Maybe I am a little biassed being a firefighter as well but from way over in Ohio its still a pretty fun series!

Lots of good ideas concerning gloves. And grommets! I already do that to my cruiser vest, partly to dispense flagging from a roll in the pocket; also because we tie things to ourselves too, to have a place on each vest lapel for attaching compass, etc.
I live in the UK so wildland fires are very rare and usually deliberate anyway as part of land managment. I had no interest in firefighting at all. That being said I have found this series of videos absolutely fascinating, thank you to both of you for taking the time to do this.
The last ship i worked on i was a designated phone talker for a damage control team. I learned quickly a quality pen that you can count on is necessary. When the stuff hits the fan information comes pouring down from the bridge and it is critical to instruct the team and firefighters every detail correctly or peoples lives could be at stake. The weekly drills can be tedious at times but the one time we had a real fire it was amazing to see how all that training paid off with no injuries and saving the ship.
Have you guys ever considered using drones at work? I feel like that would be an invaluable asset to have on that job
With all the aircraft in the air they are covered not only with support craft they also have planes and hilos just for eyes

***** People always say that but birds are more of a danger to aircraft then light drones. You have a guy trained specifically to do that job with an assistant watching and listening to air traffic..Too easy

I've always used shaving cream after I get my leather gloves wet and they get crusty. Softens them right back up.

To keep your gloves from shrinking and getting hard, you can smoke them with cool smoke for several hours. The smoke stops them from getting hard and helps a lot with the shrinking problem.

-chest pack or radio harness, I prefer the smallest for less sweat
-Silva compass preferred with the gravity degree needle to use as a clinometer (convert °to % slope) but mostly used for tree height estimates
-Rite-In-Rain works great with pencil
-try retractable Sharpie and Highlighters
-great glove talk. always suspected gloves are made to wear out (they want you to keep buying them) cheap ones made in China have short thumbs and long pinkies
-Redbag/war bag I'm familiar with PG bag (personal gear)
-many preferences (like princess pillows-so long as it doesn't take up valuable space) but quality and quantity sleep is vital in our line of work earplugs)
Right on about gloves shrinking when they get wet either from water or sweat. I always buy them one size larger. Didn't realize they stretch the leather before they cut the pattern. Good info, thanks. And Obenauf's is heaven on dry, cracked hands. Slather it on your mitts and push 'em into your gloves. Ahhhhh - Calgon take me away!!! And it is not greasy when you need to pull your hand out to do something.

I agree with Cody about regulating body heat by sticking a foot or 2 out of the sleeping bag but I use a mummy bag. Mine has a double zipper and I just slip my foot out the slit.

NWCG still publishes the Incident Commander's Orgainzer. You can download the PDF version for free or order copies of it from the NWCG. There's several versions out there that have been modified to meet the needs of local FMO's and agencies.
I like how they carry spares for other people. They're not bashful about it, it's just what they do. Obviously they can't be sentimental. It just makes sense or it's part of the code or whatever...

I had to chuckle about the hot embers in the glove reference, to this day I have a scar on the back of my hand, you guessed it hot ember inside the glove. I kept thinking, it'll go out, it'll go out, eventually I ripped the glove off as it didn't go out, like I said, permanent scar on the back of my hand. But then again, I've heard that "Chicks dig scars", with my luck, they're talking about baby chickens. Keep up the good work Cody & Alan, and I'll keep watching.
I have the Q-core SL my self. For my backpacking adventures. It's super comfortable and unbeatable so far. Even with my ultra light set up I take it with me. I have lighter blow up pads and classic foam pads. Those other mats may be lighter and fairly good but just don't have level of comfort I get from the Q-core SL. The extra few ounces are unnoticeable ..hell even if it was an extra LB.. Just not waking up that extra 1 or 2 times during the night make it worth wild.
haha do you have any idea how long I've waited for you to say what clip on compass that was?? I had no idea you could just buy them separately from the band, also i'm glad you mentioned the pen to go with rite in the rain books i had issues with running ink before!
I always use a Suunto for scuba diving.
Little piece of information: Suunto is derived from word suunta (Finnish) which means direction or azimuth.
Our million dollar radio system failed (again!) and we ended up operating off of our iPhones for like, an hour and a half while dispatched figured out that it was ok for us to use the bypass frequency on the radios to dispatch and operate with. Of course we were investigating a bunch of smoking electrical motors in a mall and it was when we needed it most!

At the end of your video when you were cooking burrito's for your comrade you had a small type 6 or 7 wildland engine, I was wondering if you would be able to make a video of what you keep on those engines? Last summer I almost went and bought a 2,000 gallon water tank truck that I was going to modify for fighting wildland fires as a contractor in B.C., Alberta, and Saskatchewan.

I would suggest that you guys don't store your sleeping bags compressed like that. You should hang them up in a closet unless you're about to head out with them. Once the insulation gets compressed for too long you'll lose your heat retention. It'll get to the point of being just a slightly fluffy blanket.

Actually, their sleeping bags are made to be compressed so that exact thing doesn't happen.

" My feet get hot" Cody check out the Kelty Tuck Series. The way they construct the bag with a zipper opening you can unzip the foot box portion and pop your feet out. Gotta see it to see what I mean.
Check out Bertucci watches. The watch case is one piece titanium with no pins to fall out.
How do you label your bags? It's easy to mix up gear when people are using the same thing.
Interesting, I use a dry bag for my laundry. That way I just self contain any smell. Then to wash it if I have to do washing in the field I pour water into the dry bag with soap and blow it up. Shake, shake, shake; clean water, done.
Hey, loved this series! I'd love to see your setup for your structural gear. In my area we run about 98% structural calls, just to see your setup and thought process behind it.
i think you touched on it in passing but don't forget to obenauf the inside of glove. treat out side of glove then turn glove inside out, use better halves wooden spoon to help with the fingers, and treat the inside (that is now on the out side). once done, then wear glove much nicer. can sew leather grommet instead of metal won't get hot
in British Columbia they do our laundry for us!!!
I've been working my way through this series while I'm on the treadmill at the gym after weight training and I have two comments.
First, thank you Wranglerstar for these long videos. I know how hard long videos are on your Internet situation.
Second, The more I watch Allen the more he reminds me of Ryan Stiles from Who's Line is it Anyway. I don't know why but that's where my mind goes. He either needs his own channel or to be on this one more.

If you want to keep your sleeping gear and such dry, you should have a look at Overboard bags.
What you say about maps strikes a resonating cord with me. I am kinda surprised that you don't have copies of the Washington State hwy map in your kit. I have my state's hwy map stored in an AutoCAD document, and I can print out an 11x17, 8.5 x 11, or legal map of any area at almost any time.
Soon-toe (suunto) made in South Africa. Check out the Suunto Core (watch) I've seen some Wildland guys use 'em.

i work with planes in the AF and operate almost exclusively in ZULU, but we're working in multiple time zones

Is there a firefighters prayer? We used to carry what they called a brass in refineries in the Houston area just in case of explosions and such.It was the first thing you picked up. Are you required to carry such an item? The number on the brass carried the corresponding number of your name. We had lots of fires and explosions during my work.
