  • What's in your bag? Warning I say generally and essentially alot in this video ;)
When you need a bag to sustain you for 14 days of hard a labor, I reached for the Maxpediton 3-1 duffel, here is my load out. I will have a write up list coming in the future to aid any new firefighter type 2's looking for suggestions.

This video is GREAT! It was very informative, showed a gear setup that is custom to you and your needs, and was a fantastic compilation of your work activities. So many great things in this bag, and I am looking forward to the future reviews of some of those gear items that you mentioned. Thanks for the video!

Great vids. I do US&R and am kind of a minimalist. I use zip top freezer bags for all of the kit in my red bags and web gear. If it gets trashed or I have to leave it in a hurry, it won't make me cry. Something to consider. You have great gear and it's expensive to lose.

Been watching your videos for awhile now Beast and absolutely look forward to each and every one. This is a particularly valuable review in my opinion as it comes through your hard experience and it's packed with practical ways of concentrating the maximum amount of kit in a minimum amount of space and weight. Gotta love the 14 socks on 5' of guyline, that was priceless; we heard it here lol! Keep up the fantastic work, you are one of the best our there on TH-cam IMHO.

Finally I was able to watch this one : ) Great video beast that's packed with info.
I added in a thermarest pillow to my sleep system about a year ago & haven't looked back. It's complete luxury & can be left at home, but I can tote it.
Funny that there were guys that have never thought about using a ground pad. I would love to see their pack : )
If you want I think a video about your thoughts from being a fireman would be interesting. Maybe a story or 2 that sticks out. Take care buddy

I have applied for 2013 season. Are you with BLM? I did 5-10 of each agency on USA Jobs.gov (NPS,USDA, BLM,FWS...). What do I have to do now? How do I know if I got accepted or not? all that good stuff.... And do they pay for your flight if you have to travel? (ex. I live in Arizona and I get accepted to MT.)

Some positive and negative comments from a 20 year federal firefighter:
Positive - Clothing recommendations (construction and quantity) were dead on. Too often I see people using the same socks or underwear for 2-5 days. Its not healthy, its not comfortable, and its not cool.
Negative - Boots. Steel shanks do not act as good hotspot detectors...ever. Also, I don't care how short you are, 8" is the minimum boot size allowed on a fire in the lower 48...period.
