Hi Jill. ❤ this topic, too. I hope you will continue to make videos about jewelry history. BTW, I have been trying to place your familiar face and now I remember that you look like Lisa Kelly, the singer from Celtic Woman

Art nouveau jewelry is whimsical to me. My first piece was a lady with wings, a necklace done in silver. I worked across from an antique store, in the early 80s, and spent many lunch hours browsing there and being carried away to a dreamlike place.

I saw an incredible exhibit in SF called "Artistic Luxury" including works by Faberge, Lalique, and Tiffany. It featured mostly pieces in the decade before the Paris Exhibition of 1900 and pieces that were shown. As you mentioned, one of the central themes of the show was the emphasis on overall design, rather than the materials used--even if those materials were intrinsically valuable. In a number of cases they not only displayed the finished item, but the design's drawings for the piece. (Seeing those was incredible.)
One aspect of Art Nouveau jewelry themes you didn't mention was the macabre. Spiders, bats, spider webs along with the snakes.

That sounds like an amazing exhibit!

@@JillMaurer It really was. I think it was originally assembled by the Cleveland Museum of Art.
It really showcased how amazing the attention to the design work made the three companies so different than others. The exhibit also displayed some similar works by other companies as comparison. I recall a Faberge cigarette case in the Louis XVI style-- white enamel over machined gold with a delicate scroll pattern of tiny diamond chips. Very much Bel Epoch rather than Art Nouveau--but still interesting. The Cartier version...well let's just say it suffered in comparison...it looked heavy handed and sloppy.
About 6 months later the Museum had an exhibit marking 100 years of Cartier in America. Even without the side-by-side the Cartier pieces seemed to be more concerned with carats/sq.inch. And IMHO the "tutti-frutti" pieces somehow managed to make diamonds, emeralds, rubies, and sapphires look like bad costume jewelry.

I agree Autumn. It was only made for a few years, a blip in history, but the pieces endure because they are so imaginative and distinct. xoxo

My grandmother recently gave me a ring on my wedding day that she found in a pawn shop. She had it inspected knowing it was a real diamond but had no idea that it's an Edwardian platinum ring. I've been trying to learn as much as I can about this ring because it's very unique and fascinating. Thank you for this video! It was very helpful and insightful 😄

This was so interesting Jill. I really appreciate that you are educating us; I'm really interested in art (jewelry and pottery are my favorites). This is not my favorite style but I do appreciate how beautiful and intricate these pieces are.

Thanks Athena! I totally understand. Art Nouveau is definitely not for everyone. There are many art forms I appreciate but wouldn't want to live with. xoxo

There is something about this style that speaks to me. I immediately thought of Joan Crawford movies. I love how you are able to get so much information about a topic in such a short amount of time.

My absolute jewelry dream is to one day own a piece by Rene Lalique. I just adore this style of jewelry and his mastership is unmatchable. I also love enamel and opals, and both are frequent elements in his work.

I truly enjoyed this segment. They are definitely one of my favorite styles of jewelry. I have seen several reproduction pieces in my hunt so one has to be careful and have a reputable dealer. I especially love the pieces with the beautiful women as the main part of the design. Such a shame this era of jewelry was so short! Kat

Thank you! Art Nouveau truly was a blip on the screen, but you can still find pieces. I completely agree that it is important to work with reputable people. xoxo

Julie, I love your videos. Just attended an jewelry exhibit at the Frick Museum in Pittsburgh, PA. and many of the pieces are Art Nouveau. Amazing beauty and oh so sensuous. Thanks for all the great info. Your talk gave me a much greater understanding of the pieces.

How funny! Art nouveau jewelry is not something I would normally buy, but a couple days ago I bought this really awesome Sterling Brooch of a Woman with a flowing dress. The design is so awesome I had to buy it. My intention is to Re-cast it in .999 Silver! I may just make it a point to start buying these pieces and recasting to preserve the beauty and history of these artists. I would recommend searching ebay for art nouveau brooches and belt buckles if you want to see some great stuff!

Oh yes I do love the style I gave my mother an art nouveau slide mirror pendent necklace by Emile Dropsy. It features a beautiful lady among the irises with flowing hair the reverse has a very nice raised flower pattern. I bought it from Vintageatmums which is my favorite Etsy jewelry site

The best place to find it is through an antique and estate jewelry dealer. My favorite place to go is an antique show because they'll have multiple antique jewelry dealers in one place. I'm sure there are also people selling online.
