It suffices to hear how beautiful the sound is in the first scene of the Waldszenen to understand the stature of Radu Lupu as a performer. 10 years ago he also maintained a great technique and perfection, now that he is beyond 70 years not anymore so. But still.... what a pianist! Hats off.
I have known these pieces since I was fourteen and that's over 50 years ago. Since then, I have heard every known pianist play them. When Radu began the first piece, I just held my breath. How beautiful. How right. How lovely. You say that his technique is 'not anymore'. Agreed that the Radu who won the Cliburn with a ferocious Prokofiev 2 when he was a youngster- when he was a technical wizard - came in later years to use his technique to make sublime poetry. Technique isn't just playing Rach 3 faster than anyone else!!!
Ho terminato ora l’ascolto del concerto di Genova e ne esco distrutto! Lupu non rientra nella mia personale "Top Ten" immaginaria dei più grandi pianisti di tutti i tempi (per pochissimo), ma di sicuro il suo Schubert rimane (da sempre) all'apice! Non ce n’è per nessuno, né per i grandi del passato e né per quelli in carriera!!!! Spiace di non essere stato presente fra i genovesi a condividere con loro questa meraviglia! Un evento unico!
Mah… ormai non faccio top ten tra artisti ma chissà. Forse Lupu ci rientrerebbe. Certo come interprete schubertiano sarebbe sul podio. Che grande artista, che perdita. Uno di quei pochissimi che riescono a coniugare un rispetto profondo non della lettera ma dell'essenza intima dell'opera con un tratto personale, irruducibile, solo suo. Senti tre note e dici: «È lui». Ma senti tre note e dici: «È lo Schubert più profondo che abbia mai ascoltato?».
