  • Edison films always tend to be a hit or miss with me. Some, like HOW THE OFFICE BOY SAW THE BALLGAME (1906) or A ROMANCE OF THE RAILS (1903) just don't work for me. Others, like 1912’s THE LAND BEYOND THE SUNSET and this one, 1910’s A CHRISTMAS CAROL, are underrated masterpieces. One of the first three silent films I ever saw, 1910's A CHRISTMAS CAROL has always held a special place in my heart. Enjoy it here with my accompaniment!

Lovely; it always amazes me how early scenarists and filmmakers were able to get the salient points of a novel or novella into one reel of film. And your accompaniment is, as usual, excellent - I especially like the choice of "Hall of the Mountain King", one of the most menacing and foreboding pieces of music ever written, for the appearance of Marley's ghost. Kudos.

Thank you so much for the kind words about my accompaniment! I try hard to make it both as authentic and engaging as possible. Yes I agree- sometimes the adoptions can be incredibly good and borderline (if not bonafide) masterpieces like Edison’s 1910 “Frankenstein”.

Wow. Could this be the earliest rendition of The Christmas Carol on film?

Technically no- a short 4 minute “Christmas Carol” from 1901 holds that claim. The Edison version is hands down the best though!

shortest version i've ever seen; well done.although some of your choices of music are a bit odd, sidewalks of n.y. for instance

Ahh I chose “Sidewalks of New York” as sort of an “innocent” theme while Scrooge is shown memories from his childhood by the Ghost of Christmas Past, as the tune lyrics are about being nostalgic for a long gone childhood.
