  • Lorna Anderson represented California in the Miss America Pageant of 1957 and was selected third runner-up. Her talent was the accordion!
Bert Parks introduced Lorna by saying, "Ask any child what instrument he would like to play most, chances are he would say 'an accordion.' And that is Miss California's instrument, and she's going to play for you right now."
Lorna took the stage and charmed the judges, playing "Dark Eyes."

Lorna, how amazing that you are able to interact with people in a way that could not have been imagined in 1957. A couple of question if I may ...
Did you realise your ambition to teach music?
What make was your accordion, and do you still own it?

Those were the days when music was created in great part by families getting together to have a good time. Live performances were commonplace and everyone who played an instrument brought it along to share the music with others.

Oh, goodness, the instrument was in its glory then and the world was a very different place for families. We all got together and played instruments and sang and danced and reveled in the joy of getting together and having a joyous time together. Yes, the smorgasbord was a big part of our large gatherings, and the food was really extra special. Ahhhh, those were the days.

It's still very popular here in Brazil. It's present in many music styles. I used to teach accordion last year before the pandemic and hopefully many people were interested. I don't understand why the accordion was forgotten by the americans, it was so popular in 50s, could you explain for me? I believe it wasn't only in USA. Europe many countries still play it. Sorry for my English, I'm not good at this.

@@lornaanderson185 Don't know where to start, but one famous player that I thought might be known to the American accordion community was American-Swede Walter Eriksson. I don't know what repertoire he played in the US but in the 70s and 80s he toured in Sweden many times with Andrew Walter and the Lindqvist brothers (Bröderna Lindqvist). Another player/composer I like is Hans-Erik Nääs.

Lorna, you and I spoke on the phone,a week or so ago. 1957 was a long time ago, yet it seems like only a short time in our past. I am quite sure that we, my parents and my siblings, witnessed Bert Parks, you, performing Dark Eyes on your accordion, along with all America in awe of your unbending talent and grace. I sincerely hope, since we only live one half hour apart, that we could sit down and chat briefly about your prowess power over your instrument. My body aches with arthritis but I still enjoy opening up that fur lined box to the revelation of my accordion. Although I have had no formal training
with it, I find it intriguing to be able to raise it to my lap, place the straps on my shoulders, and give it a whirl, and see where my fingers take me, up and down the octaves.
