      Yes. As a violinist I can.
      But this is devilishly hard to pull, so I would not assume who is who.
      Ok. Augustin is the cleanest of all modern violinists, so if you told me that one of the recordings was him, I’d know which one.

      Hadelich plays clean with impeccable tone quality (like Szeryng, who I believe was the previous owner of this violin)
      SoHyun Ko plays with the more emotional intensity and is my favourite here.
      If I listened blind, I would have guessed the perfected tone was the seasoned pro.

    While SoHyun Ko plays extremely well, there is a clear difference between recordings. On the technical side, Augustin articulates every note, and bow stroke. Nothing is left smudgy. And while you sort of get the feeling SoHyun is trying to keep up with this fast pace, it’s clear that Augustin’s playing is relaxed. On the musical side, they both phrase well, however Augustin has the expertise to bring out more of the subtleties that are so difficult to bring out while also balancing the technical side of this piece.
    Both play wonderfully though!

    • @richardcarter5314
      @richardcarter5314 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      The irony of this is that I would say this about Ms KO's playing. But I would phrase it as I found it easier to enjoy the sound of her playing!

    • @yulianamour
      @yulianamour ปีที่แล้ว +16

      I agree that Augustin's playing looks / sounds more relaxed. SoHyun's version slightly sounds like she is in a rush to keep up with the tempo and hit all the keys as compared to Augustin. That piece is indeed very hard and technically challenging so it needs even more years of experience on the violin to make the playing more refined, that's why Augustin nailed it. But they are both great regardless.

    The prodigy plays all the notes right while the professional plays them right and also gives emotion to the music, makes you feel it.

  • @PaladinofChaos
    @PaladinofChaos ปีที่แล้ว +188

    This randomly popped up in my rabbit hole of watching shorts. I’m no musical expert so pardon the lack of technical lingo. While the prodigy was able to match the pace and notes, the touch on the strings feels relatively monotonous and hasn’t developed that emotion or distinction of when to play it hard or when to soften it.
    The professional has that finesse or touch so each note has an emotion or voice.
    It’s a subtly like that can separate the level of development or experience on top of their ability. No doubt SoHyun Ko will develop that as she continues. So nothing is meant negatively.

    SoHyun is technically excellent, wonderful. But Augustin knows and feels the world the music is coming from and expresses it through his playing. He even layers it with a cuteness of his own, like a teenager showing you a personal magic trick. This is why his tone is warmer and fuller. It’s not simply performing a piece. It’s a whole world coming to life and made concrete and intelligible for the listener.

    Augustins clean, airy and crisp articulation on the staccato with superb bow control in bringing the bow off the strings on up and down strokes which aids in that beautiful light and airy yet rich tone as well as playing the doublestops closer to the frog, (lower half) the bow position not at the usual slant to get a softer sweet tone, but the heavier gruff tone he achieves got me so excited being as I played and performed and lived and breathed this piece age 14 or 15 when I was in high school, that I grabbed a lotion tube and tried to follow along the fingerings and then grabbed a glass drink bottle and started playing the double stops on the bottle neck and bowing along with a big big smile on my face when I should be in the store buying some groceries LOL. 🤓I pulled my violin out a year ago to run through and refresh my technique and recollection, and I played so hard that I played my fingerboard write off my antique violin which is somewhere in the 120-year-old range .. hygrometers exist in the violin case for a reason.... 🤪 This piece, Mendelssohn Concerto in E minor and Beethovens Violin Concerto D Major (Itzhak Perlmans performance is pretty much the example I aspired to) at that time. and other favorites from middle school like Vivaldi 4 seasons, Mozart Concerto in C major etc and some others commited to memory are a blast.
    My observations for So Hyuns performance however, right after she jumps to harmonic notes /4th position and back down to first and doublestops, she ends up sliding down exxageratedy resulting in a near syncopated twang which some of the other commenters have observed as being rushed or sounding rushed. I cringed when I heard it. There is a degree of off tempo and drawn out note that are just a natural part of expression, as are body movements, facial expressions are but only in the right passages, in the right way, and only so much to accentuate dramatic effect, but able to recover on time and in tempo on the next measure or note. Still, a fascinating and remarkable performance by a fellow young Korean female.

    Yes-by audio only too: SoHyun Ko is minutely "slower" (if that word's even fair here!)… *yet, >her tone AND phrasing is better! He sounds as if he's in a race, but she, though exquisitely fast, sounds as if both beauty and power intertwine!*
    (myself, while not a violinist, I played, studied classical piano for 10 years so I have some genuine grasp of what's involved in this brilliant showpiece.)
    They're some lovely subtleties in his playing. However, I prefer her interpretation-AND her violin, I'd say is also a more beautiful instrument. More specifically, his has moments that are just on the edge of sounding shrill, while hers does Not do that… plus hers has a richness that I don't perceive in his.)
    A great showpiece in either case!
    WELL-done by both! Still, she has my vote.

      Her’s is more robotic than Augustine. Also stop saying that playing faster is worse. It’s not. His has more dynamics. Also this piece is very virtuosic. You must play this piece with very interesting dynamics.

      Sound shrill is point by the way. You don’t want richness in this part of the piece. On the violin you want it to be less rich on the fast high notes. Richness is for the start of this piece since it starts out on a low note which flies directly into a run.

    Hadelich's control is so good that he is able to do more musically, pushing and pullung at the tempo, for instance, and generating more contrast between spiccato and tenuto notes.

    Both musicians portray the music differently and are playing in different styles Sohyun plays a classy style and interprets her piece like almost a fancy castle she plays the piece to how she would like to hear it tying notes together and swinging you along without sharp changes. Augustin most definitely played this on a professional level articulating his notes but it felt very strict to the music almost perfect or robotic while this was played he showed emotion through the notes all the way through. Overall Sohyun's playing was not all refined and in the piece she does make errors so Augustin did play it better but Sohyun interpreted the music and showed her creation of how she loves the piece and wants to make it sound and be amazing it is in my opinion very enjoyable to listen to Sohyuns more to listen to her pure interpretation of the piece. This effort in Sohyuns piece almost makes you think of the time and ways she wanted the piece to sound every step of the way.

    Her notes are screeching and cutting edge precision sharp - a few times short of an attack.
    His notes move more smoothly and "slide" together easier. He plays and interprets the melody line bringing you to a more gentle ending with each phrase.

    • @rdwilln
      @rdwilln 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      the screeching could also be amplified by the method of recording. Violin recording is hard to get right, and It's a extremely unpleasant instrument if not recorded properly.

    Augustine is much more polished and clean and much more musical at the same time. SoHyun has subtle aspects of string crossings and shifts that obscure the musical line. Augustin is one of the premier violinists in the world. Of course he will outplay anyone.

    I can't help myself, but I have the impression, for many asian musicians it's more a demonstration of superior technique and not so much a medium for transportation of emotions and expression. Maybe the reason for this is to be found in an education where openly lived emotions is frowned upon.
