Plus, there is pee, sweat on this pillow and who knows what else! Clean it now with 3 ingredients (including baking soda) that you probably have around the house!

I know how attached you guys get to your pillow and you don’t want to ruin it and so you’re nervous and looking for a way to get it clean. This method works great on all kinds of pillows but ideally for white fabric or fabric that can be bleached out. The hydrogen peroxide will bleach the color.
This pillow was tan and it's so beat up we didn't care if the color changed. First, every pillow is different, depending on what they’re made of. So shredded memory foam, molded foam, down, feathers and other materials are going to have varying washing directions.
So first look for the care tag or website to see what it advises to clean your pillow. I mean I’ve seen dry clean only pillows and so we don’t want to ruin any. If this is your aunt Martha’s wool pillow, you may not want to take the chance!
Measuring cup
Hydrogen peroxide - Now some people are going to say to use vinegar but it’s an acid that helps loosen mineral deposits, such as lime and rust, and dissolve soap scum. So I prefer to use peroxide. 3%.
Hydrogen peroxide is not only a cleaner but it’s also a disinfectant. It has the ability to quickly kill bacteria. And it’s safe because after it comes into contact with light and air, peroxide will decompose turning into simple water and oxygen.
Baking Soda - Baking Soda acts a cleaning agent because it is a mild alkali and can cause dirt and grease to dissolve easily in water for effective removal.
Tablespoon
Spray bottle
Here’s the recipe
8 ounces or 2 cups of 3% hydrogen peroxide
3 Tablespoons of baking soda
A few drops of liquid dish detergent like Dawn
Mix it up and spray it on. Your spray bottle will get clogged. Don’t overspray it because you can get mold inside. Let this mixture dry on. To speed that up you can use a blow dryer, a fan or put it in a dryer on a very low heat setting. You can use dryer balls or tennis balls and that breaks up the lumps as they dry.
You may have to use multiple dry cycles (especially on air fluff) but it will dry eventually. If you don’t have a dryer hang the pillow to dry outside in the sun or somewhere where there’s good air flow. Take down your pillow every so often and shake and fluff it.
Moving around the fluff inside will also help get it all dried out. If your pillow has shredded foam and it’s an adjustable type pillow like Coop (which we love) then you can reach inside to fluff it up. You can find a link to them below in case it’s time for a new pillow.
Once you’re done with whatever method you use, you don’t want to have to keep doing this. So get yourself a waterproof pillow protector. Then you hardly ever have to wash your pillows, you just wash the cover with your sheets and pillowcases each week. Much easier.
Pillow protectors keep out dust, drool, etc.

I have both waterproof and quilted protectors on all my mattresses and pillows. I wash the quilted protectors everytime I wash the sheets, and I wash the waterproof ones every 3 months or as needed

Thank you for saving my futon mattress! I used this method and it worked beautifully! I mixed the baking soda in my first application and the sprayer clogged - it was frustrating!! The second application I didn’t add the baking soda to the peroxide and soap. I sprinkled on the baking soda after spraying the peroxide and soap mixture. No frustration! Really beautiful results! Happy to hear it worked. I've found mixing it well in a measuring cup before had the best results. This time I put too much baking soda on and it was a lot to vacuum up at the end. Thanks for commenting!

Thank you so much for your video. My husband tends to sweat alot when he sleeps and it creates a VERY obvious darkening on the bed sheet and pillow cover. It pains my heart to see my brand new luxury linen turn grey and black. This really helps and I'm doing this every time I was my bed sheet.

My husband has the same pillow, I make him put it in the washing machine, then dryer. It does get deformed for the first night, but then it regains its shape. So far so good.

Hi, Just one tip you might find interesting. For some I was 'opening' stitch and take all the quilt out before just sticking into the washing machine, then saw back in. Now I sawed in zippers to easily take out the quilt. I can wash it as often as I like :D All clean and smells nice.

I cleaned my latex pillow following the same advice of the mattress and I had an amazing result. Nice and clean as new . I will suggest to put soda direct on the pillow same for the mattress for a very hard yellow stains and live it to dry .
Once treatment should be enough. Repeat it if really really hates yellow stains.

My cat was sleeping under the covers with me and had a full bladder. He's an older cat and he made it as far as my pillow before he lost control of his bladder and emptied it. I also sweat a *lot* due to a thyroid condition so my pillows get sweat-soaked. And cats have puked on my pillows as well.
Can a drop of laundry detergent (for scent) be used in the mix as well?
I looove Coop's mattress protectors - I have one on every bed in the house. I didn't know they made pillows, will have to check them out.
The pillows are great! No one else I know of gives you extra foam or makes it so easy to add or remove it. It’s the most easily customized pillow.
I would have liked to see you “strip” the pillow for 3 hours in a white tub with washing soda (not the same as baking soda!), Borax, and soap.
Would this work if you sprinkle the baking soda on the surface & spray it with the peroxide/dawn mixture? That way you wouldn’t have to worry about your bottle clogging?
Yes that works but you get a paste that's messy. I did try it and I prefer to have it in the solution.
The truck is to make sure it's stirred well. Putting it all into the spray bottle and shaking it up doesn't work - that's when it gets clogged up.

After adding Hydrogen Peroxide, is it still safe to sleep on? Does it have any after effect like when cleaning the toilet, the smell is so strong.
Yes it's safe to sleep on. Hydrogen peroxide turns into water and oxygen when exposed to light and air. It doesn't leaves any harmful or toxic residue behind like most disinfectants.
You should wear gloves though because it can be bad did you skin.

No! We borrowed it from a friend (really). We are into real messes so if we don't have them we have to find something to test. It's a tough job!!!

The stopper keeps the pump and stem from clogging. Mixture should be mixed really well. I have four of the Serta Memory Foam Cooling Jel Pillows that are supposedly machine washable. I have covers on them no noise stain and liquid proof covers on them. I would like to try and wash them but maybe give your idea a try first. Thanks for another great video.

They were down filled and were really old but comfortable.

I want to know how it went. You can cut the pillow take how the cotton and put the case in some bleach. Just let it soak in bleach and dis washing liquid. For like a whole day. I did this to a towel and it was dirty. And the towel came out looking new. But be careful the bleach will also eat the fabric if in there to long. The towel was 1 week.
A mouse climbed into my pillowcases and pooped on the filling. I usually have two pillowcases over the filling.

I'm so sorry that sounds so difficult. I would use a waterproof pillow protector because it will keep it from getting into the pillow. And soak any pillow cases in Oxyclean for stains.

You have to keep buying them and although this isn't my pillow, you may not understand the emotional attachment people have to their pillows. Getting a new one is unthinkable. Some people won't watch this video because they won't clean their pillow, it would alter it too much. I love my Brooklyn Bedding pillow and use a pillow protector. It's good for a few years still. BEST PILLOW.

Sometimes you gotta make the video and the weather in the spring could turn snow, rain and cold. But I also think it’s therapeutic to beat the pillow.
