  • Adam shares the story of a recently completed project: an accurate replica of the Starchild prop seen at the end of 2001: A Space Odyssey. The journey to making this prop involved collaborations with effects artist Steve Neill, finishing work by Tested's Kayte Sabicer, and electronics by Jeremy Williams! Keep an eye on it's hypnotic gaze!

    I think this build has an insane quality and obviously the creepy effect you guys aimed for. Nevertheless I am missing the godlike light ball and shimmer that surrounds the starchild. A great thing would be to see the Prop in some kind of room installation within a illuminated acrylic sphere!

    Adam, I've had this concept bugging me for years now - a replica Terminator hand that randomly has a minor twitch of a finger or partial clench as if trying to form a fist and a matching terminator head that now & then flickers the eyes - as if it's not quite "dead" - think you could build one?
    Edit - a solar powered garden lamp gave me the idea - when their battery is almost flat, the LEDs start to flicker. It'd be a nice little item sitting on the TV while watching a Terminator marathon

    I have a practical question, do earth magnets ever mess with the electronics? Is it a good idea to put magnets near motors like that?

    • @spagamoto
      @spagamoto 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Not a problem - the Magnets + Electronics = Bad is largely a relic of old tube TVs/CRT monitors and magnetic storage (floppies, hard drives). Modern electronics (SSDs, LCDs) and most circuit boards are fine in a magnetic field (well maybe don't put them in an MRI).
      Putting a magnet near a motor (like, basically touching) *might* affect the performance, but this is unlikely. The thing is, magnetic fields from small magnets decay quickly over distance, so even a mm or two will remove most of the effect.

    • @coreysuffield
      @coreysuffield 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      the main issue with magnets or electromagnets is if the magnetic field changes or moves, that would be more cause for concern or also if the electrical wires moved through the magnetic field

    The original baby was cast in gelatine. Hence no blinks, the gelatine skin would have rotted off months after filming completed. Originally he translucent quality of gelatine would have made the baby look amazing. Fibreglass can be made the same translucency as gelatine, so an opaque mannequin baby could have been avoided.The gap in the corner of the eyes lets it down quite a bit. Just my thoughts.

      In 2018 there was an exhibition at the German Film Museum, Frankfurt to commemorate the 50th anniversary of 2001: A Space Odyssey. One of the exhibits was a replica of HAL's camera eye and the label next to it said 'Made by Adam Savage'. I was very happy to be able to admire one of his works up close and I would also be happy to see how he created it.
