- Today I Today I visited Roots Hall to explore the story of Southend United under the ownership of Ron Martin, and how today's game vs Gateshead could be their last ever home match - the club could die if a £1.4 million fee isn't paid by March 1st to HMRC.

🚨 SOUTHEND UNITED UPDATE 🚨
Owner Ron Martin has put the club up for sale, or if this isn’t possible, he is looking for new investors.
He would like the sale to go through by the end of the season.
This is a fantastic bit of news!
Fantastic video highlighting the problems we all face here at Southend. A young journalist that will have a bright future.
Thank you for watching, fingers crossed! 😅
Remember the day Ron Martin bought the club was my second season as a season ticket holder.
We had high hopes we might push on stabilise in league 1 but his stadium plans always seemed crazy... I think the original plan was a 30,000 seater a Sainsbury's on the site of roots hall. If I remember correctly.
How it has gone bad... I live in Darlington now the club that was killed by it's stadium lessons to learn be suspicious of new owners with crazy plans of new stadiums.
Hi! I'm an ex-Brit whose grandfather lived in Southend and loved the football club.
First, hats off to the parents who raised this compassionate, kind and articulate young man!
There's a lot of blame to go round for the club's situation.
1> The EFL has the right and the duty to prevent a harmful change of ownership. They failed.
2> The local government should have either welcomed Martin's plans or thrown them out. They did neither, and the situation has dragged on for years. They failed.
3> It's in Martin's business interests to have a successful club in a shiny new stadium with a gazillion parking spaces. In England you can't do that without the buy-in of the supporters. He didn't get it. He failed.
[I don't have any brilliant ideas on how to fix all of this, but I can't wait to see how it turns out.]
Hi, thank you. I hope the new stricter rules can prevent this from happening again. It’s good to see they have more paid the money, but change is still needed.
@@TFSS It will be very interesting to see whether the new rules are effective, or even enforceable. We can only hope.
BTW, you have some very interesting videos. I wish I'd stumbled on them sooner! 🙂
@@TFSS With one match left, Southend have not just survived, they could slide into the last playoff spot if everything goes their way.
[And your home club, Barnet, is now locked into the #5 spot by the results of today's matches.]
Millwall man here. Firstly brilliant piece of intelligent presentation by you, so well done young man. Southend f.c is a proper proud club where all its supporters live or come from the area just like my mob and I for one really hope it survives this corruption and gets someone in that cares more about the club and it’s community rather than their own bank balance. Keep the faith and get back to where you deserve to be and once was. Not the premiership, that’s the show biz league but the championship defo hopefully
Heartbreaking....stay strong Southend 👍🏻👍🏻
Massive football supporter here in the USA...this is hands down one of the best videos I've seen on youtube detailing the events of a club in real-time. Gutted for the supporters of clubs like Southend, Scunthorpe, Bury etc. who are the real victims of ownership neglect and greed. While the upper tiers of the game continue to attract millions upon millions, it's clubs like these that are getting left in the dust and forgotten about. 100+ years of history, memories and accomplishments flushed down the drain.
Thank you for the kind words, as you say, 100+ years gone to waste if the issue isn’t resolved.
@@TFSS yea, from the USA as well. Incredible job reporting this. Professionally done! Sad to see owners ruining clubs.
A brilliant video by a young man with a bright future in football journalism. I feel for Southend and their fans. As an AFC Bournemouth fan since childhood, I remember us being 30 minutes from liquidation, but we had a decent chairman who put his hands in his pockets and the rest is history. What the property developers, the real estate vultures, can never understand is the sense of community that supporting a lower league club brings, and this video highlights it superbly. Having moved to London many years ago, I now follow Wealdstone, and I know how precarious life in the National League can be. I hope the Shrimpers live on and fight another season.
Thank you, it’s always sad to see this happen to a club.
Keep going Southend you will get there I truly feel for you it's to easy for these so called directors to take what they want with out a thought of the people it hurts I'm a life long Brentford surporter and iv been where you are now and it hurts so keep pushing you will get out of it, I've had some good time on your terraces. And some not so good but it is real football . Good Luck
Southend United
As a bolton fan and being 24 hours from death as a football club I feel so sorry for you Southend fans Hope you make it guys
Excellent video. Well done. I’m a QPR fan living in Colchester and I know the rivalry between Col U and Southend. I can honestly say there’s not one Col U fan who likes what you’re going through. We need you back in the EFL to enjoy those derbies. All the best.
It would be amazing to see Southend vs Col U happen again! Hopefully!
🚨 UPDATE 🚨
Southend HAVE paid the £1.4 million owed to HMRC.
The club will continue to operate in the NL this season as they push for promotion.
Thank you for the support on my video about the issue, it’s great to see it has been resolved.
But still, the message remains the same: #MartinOut
The cycle begins again a takeover is needed asap
It's significant that they did more than that. They also injected working capital, which they didn't have to do. This confirms my belief that a thriving club is in alignment with Martin's property development interests. The Club statement on Feb 28 is:
"Ahead of the HMRC hearing on March 1, the Club can confirm the monies owed to HMRC, under the Petition, have been paid in full.
Funds as working capital have also been injected to help Southend United over the coming months.
The Club’s objective is to regain its future as a club within the Football League at the earliest opportunity."
It's good news, but I fear that the money was only found at the 11th hour to make the owner seem like a hero, and will only serve to keep the wolf from the door for so long unless a significant investment is made from a new owner.
Well,if he really wanted to get rid of the club why pay off the tax owed??
@@roystonmarshall5027 Maybe he's speculating by hoping to stay in charge long enough to make millions from the sale of the ground?
What a g young journalist well done lad!
Thank you!
Good on you lads for standing up for your club, never is a player bigger then the club and never is a club bigger then the fans.
Respect from Millwall.
Brilliant documentary. The late Motty would be impressed !!!!
Thank you!
This is one of the best videos I’ve seen on the Southend situation. You’ve got a bright future with football journalism and with your channel!
Thanks for watching!
Great production. Well done. I used to work at Roots Hall about 20yrs ago. we wanted Ron Martin gone then too
Thank you, it seems he’s never been wanted.
Had some great times watching Southend like you said in brilliant vlog if we do go and start at the bottom as a Phoenix club we will come back stronger with all our wonderful fans Southend utd and proud .
Thanks for watching, I think anything is possible with the supporter base they have!
As a Leyton Orient Fan I really Feel For You Guys, We had the same issues With our owner who took us from the First Division Play offs To The Very Brink of Liquidation, We were Lucky and Survived. It was always a Joy And a Pleasure To Visit Roots Hall, Even before the days of Barry Fry you have always had a great core of Fans who supported the Blues through thick and thin. I sincerely wish you guys the best of luck on March 1st, and hope you get a positive result towards securing your Future. Keep Believing and stay Strong...Good Luck.
Grimsby fan here. Well done on this, well written and made, good presentation style for a genuine club with proper supporters. Wish you all the best for the future.
Thank you for the kind words.
All the best of luck, Chins up, things can change very quickly. BHAFC.
Excellent mini-doc. Thank you.
As a fan of Tranmere, having gone through some similarly tough times in the past, I feel your pain. The new Football Regulator must find a way to protect grass roots clubs and their communities.
As a Newport County fan my heart goes out to you because we went bust in 1989 and had to start all over and reform the club. This sort of thing shouldn't still be happening in the modern game and if Southend United is wound up I'm sure you'll be able to start up again somehow! We did it and so can you ,don't give up hope, have faith. Good luck!🍀Shrimpers.
It’s great to hear so many clubs that have gone through this have recovered, I hop Southend do too!
Great journalism. A sad state of affairs. I can empathise having been there with the Swans more than once. How we survived was down to the fans alone, but things happen and I wish all Southend fans the very very best going forward. Swans for Southend! Good luck friends.
Great video, great journalism, great topic, good on you lad.
Much appreciated
I am a West Fan wishing you all the best. Keep fighting. Fully understand how you all feel. Hope the Hammers club can help with a friendly game. Good luck.
A friendly is a good idea, should raise some good money.
Great video. I am a Walsall fan and have been to Roots Hall in the past All true football fans stand with Southend United fans dont let The Shrimpers die.
Thank you, I am hoping to visit Walsall soon.
Good coverage mate your a young man whose got a good future from a chesterfield fan
Thank you!
A great balanced piece of journalism, as a Wycombe fan I was devastated when Southend beat us in a play off final a few years ago. But I hope that Southend United find a way to get over this issue. Mr Martin and the EFL are both culpable on this tragic chain of events. It will be interesting to see if the proposed new football authority can resolve these tragic events. I will be watching for the news on March 1st. Good luck Shrimpers.
Thank you. I hope the new paper will prevent this from happening again.
Wrexham fan here, we went through something similar. Fortunately we were able to win the war against the asset strippers but not without some battle scars. We’ve saved the ground but left with some ugly flats on the car park and will restrict potential expansion plans. No club should have to go through this, I Hope you guys can get a happy ending 🤞🏻
It’s good to see you thriving now under new ownership, hopefully Southend can do so to.
8:31 a wild Smiv appears
Good luck Southend with your future. I saw my rugby league team go through exactly this same thing 20 years ago. Now just a housing estate stands where Mc claren field was. One positive thing though, the York City programme will become a collectors item. Good luck guys.
Supremely great journalism. Wish I was part of the protest, need more information so supporters no where to go. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Hopefully will be a follow-up part two video. Great reporting ✅
Thank you! The Twitter account @fan_southend1 organises the protests and shares info.
@@TFSS that's fantastic thank you
Great video under sad circumstances young man.
I hope for every Southend fan that the worst doesn't happen.
Thank you.
It's criminal the way Martin has treated your club I'm a Millwall fan so makes you appreciate our chairman & what he's doing for us .ps nice of you to get Smiv in your video
It’s so sad to see. I didn’t realise it was him until I watched it back!
@@TFSS he was there highlighting the same thing mate done a decent video of it if you go on his site
Such a sad story. Here's hoping we don't lose another historic club
Great video, sad situation. Visited Roots Hall with Leeds 3 times and really enjoyed the away end and stadium as a whole.
Glad you enjoyed it, hopefully there’s many more trips to come!
Southend fan here in New Zealand. Great video thanks for highlighting the problems ! Great video
Thanks for watching!
Had no idea this was happening, terrible 😢thanks for sharing this, you’ve got a bright future ahead of you!
As a former resident of Southend [Sutton Road] who is not a Southend United fan, this is terrible news.
great work-all the best in your journalistic future
Thanks for watching!
An excellent informative and sad film. I didn't realise how grave the situation is!?
Thank you. Let’s see what happens tomorrow.
Great coverage. I look forward to watching your career in journalism.
Thank you for watching!
I remember watching Southend beat Preston 3-2 on a Bank Holiday Monday in waaaaaaaaaaay back in 2007.
I remember when Leeds nearly went bust. I feel your pain.. I hope you get through this..
So well done with some great contributions. I am a Bradford City supporter and it is true like one guy said that you go to games and you have your mates there in front and behind you that you look forward to seeing each week but you have never been to their house. It's such a community thing and a thing that many supporters live for. Not all have great family lives with great relationships but they have been a Bradford or Southend fan all their lives, it is the one constant in their lives and for someone to take that away from all these people is disgusting. Let's hope things get resolved and those causing these issues understand what they are doing and disappear but do so with a clear conscience. Best of luck.
Thank you. When I visited Bradford I felt a big community sense as well, you’re right.
Good luck to you, I support the Orient and we went through something similar, no fans or club deserve this. Transcends local rivalries , well done for putting this out there.
Thanks. As you say, it is unacceptable.
First of all what a great job done by that young guy reporting on this, and a promising future in football journalism.
An Arsenal fan here but it’s really and genuinely gut wrenching seeing yet another football club in the football family go through this. You really do feel for the fans, players and employees at Southend United because everything depends on payment of the £1.4m tax bill to the HMRC as to their existence in the football pyramid. I really do hope that the £1.4m is paid in time because to see 117 years of history just go away like this would be really unfortunate. No one ever wants so see their local football club in serious decline. Wishing everyone at Southend United all the best at this very uncertain time. ❤️💙 ⚽️
Thank you. It’s such a shame and hopefully they get out of the situation.
Great coverage. It’s such a shame this is happening
Good luck to you guys as an argyle fan we have been there hopefully it will be sorted
Thanks.
Hey Buddy, Glen here! The way you put this together is incredible! Nicely balanced analysis from yourself and the guests + change in scenary/background is perfect. Also I spotted dad haha (great camera guy). 🔥 Keep going 💙
Vale fan here. Good luck to you all, I know how this feels as out last chairman nearly did this to us. We got him out and someone else took over. Carol has been brilliant, she has given advice to other clubs so it maybe worth reaching out to her o Twitter.
All the best Southend, I remember when you were a force of a club.
Looks like you been saved for now soo glad for southend fans 🚜🚜🚜🚜
I know what Southend going through my team Bolton Wanderers nearly went out of business bury did go out of business so sad
gutted for yoy keeping my fingers crossed you can get though this steve whu fan
We been there too good luck 👍
That was a great documentary, straight to the point,. Keep up the good work you are doing. Best wishes SWA
Thank you!
Spot on documentary young man.Hope you survive!🤞
Thank you for watching, me too.
Top video young man.. hope everything works out ok for your club… keep fighting the fight…👏👏👍
Thank you!
This nearly happened to my local team Ebbsfleet. This is so sad. Hope you will survive Southend
It's always a shame to see a non-league club struggling like this.
@@TFSS exactly
Nobody knows what’s going to happen. But Martin is an absolute wrongun who is destroying the green belt
Ebbsfleet doing well at the moment. Top of the league
@@jamesbentall3984 we are but it’s not over yet 🙂
I hope Southend survives. As a Coventry supporter I remember many exciting battles with us in the old 3rd division in the early 1960s. According to Wikipedia the Roots Hall ground was built on a former sand quarry which was then used as a landfill site and filled with tonnes of compacted rubbish. I'm not sure I'd want to buy a house built on inherently unstable land like that.
Haha, thank you for the info.
Im a Southend fan in the USA im praying we will still exist in 2 weeks time ! Ive been there through all our goodtimes lets get through this bad time !
Hopefully! 🇺🇸
Had no idea things were so serious. Be a tragedy if ‘the worst’ were to happen. Keeping everything crossed for you and that this Martin fella opens his wallet and does the decent thing. (from a Sheffield United fan).
We’ll see on Wednesday, but there’s not long left.
I found this very interesting and well composed. I've been to Roots Hall just the once. If your club does fold, it will rise again. It may take a while but it will. The size of your town and it's support base will make this happen. Look at Bury, Macclesfield and Chester for example. All rise from the ashes. Best wishes.
Thank you. The club will only come back stronger.
Sad. Remember them up at Everton in 1992, fans were fine. FA Cup 3rd round.
Shame to see the situation they are in, I’d love to see them back up in the championship one day!
Great video I hope it ends well for Southend united and you recover from this .as a Notts fan we have been there .good luck and hope to see you at Meadow lane again soon
Thanks for watching, I’d love to visit!
Torquay fan here ,playing you on Saturday. After Saturday I will be wishing you all the best and hope to play you next season.👍
I hope so too!
All Brentford fans are with you 🤞🏽
Thanks so much for this!! I was Southend born and bred..last game I went to was in 1996 before I immigrated to Australia.. I'd always follow the news with Southend..but this little documentary makes my so sad!
Southend united ❤so sad
Ps I was a female drummer in a marching band and my mate always tried to convince me to bring my drum to games (I never did cos it was only rented) and I didn't want to deal with any aftermath lol
The club is very close to a takeover now and should be safe. In terms of the football, they’re near the play offs too! So it’s a lot better right now.
I used to be involved with Colchester United but have always had an affection for The Shrimpers. Southend United is a fab club. Very nice video, made with care and consideration. UTB!
Thank you for watching, it’s nice to hear that, despite the rivalry, both clubs stick up for each other in these types is situations!
I'm a Millwall fan living in Southend and feel the anger and pain of supporters and the community. Many years ago, in the 1960's we had a chairman who was also out of the Ron Martin mold. Both of these vermin cared little about the supporters and what their club means to them. Fortunately, our man bailed out after consistent pressure from the fan base. It will be a very sad day on March 1st if SUFC go to the wall, However, if that is the case I sincerely hope the club can rise again...without Mr Ron Martin..... Good Luck to you all !!
Thank you for the comment, it seems Martin won’t crumble under the pressure of fans but we can keep trying!
I think the Millwall were a little more persuasive........
Great reporting!
Thanks for watching.
Great work mate.
Thank you!
Property developer nearly ended Scunthorpe United, I as a Huddersfield Town fan remembering "championship" clashes with the shrimpers and hope you all come through this and get back to where you belong
Fingers crossed, good to see Scunthorpe were saved, hopefully Southend are too!
@8:36 smiv makes an appearance.
Great video mate you captured me in the protest march shouting my head off lol. Thanks for the coverage
Thanks, it was a great protest.
Brilliant video mate. I honestly hope something works out for Southend Utd. Also... cheeky @smiv appearance at 8:38
Thank you! I didn’t realise until editing!
Don't expect BBC/Sky to be bothered after THEY only invented football in 1992. The young man presenting could go far in sports media.
Very sad situation for the club. Excellent reporting.
Sad news if it happens I enjoyed my trips to roots Hall 🚜🚜🚜🔵⚪️⚫️
Fed up with all these owners buying clubs just so they can sell the land they are on. 🚜🚜🚜🔵⚪️
Absolutely brilliant amazing job well done great video
Thank you very much!
I am only a Wrexham AFC fan I will always be behind Southend United fans
All fans appreciate the support!
Excellent video mate. Let’s just hope we save our club ❤
Thank you, hopefully!
F##k fair play. protect clubs from this.
Great coverage of an eventful day.
Thanks, a lot went on!
All the best to all you down Southend, from this Hammer, who hate's the way us fan's have been treated by the board & director's. Never wanted to leave Upton Park. Please do your best to turn your club around.
Thank you for the kind words, it’s a shame for any team to move from a rectangular atmospheric older stadium to a modern soulless bowl!
@@TFSS I went from 6 rows back from pitch on the corner of lower west to Bobby Moore stand to 10 rows from back up in the hight's of the QE Stadium, total madness.
Congratulations on an excellent video highlighting the problems of the club I have supported since 1966. I have been to hundreds of SUFC games and have taken my son, daughter and grandsons to games. I so hope we will not have seen our last game at Roots Hall... two weeks will tell. You have a bright future in journalism if this video is anything to go by.
Thank you for the kind words, good luck with your club’s future.
Southend is my local team is so sad to hear what is happening 😢
Sad to see, hopefully they will make it out of the situation alive!
It was a hard watch for me as a lifelong Shrimper.
I have great faith in the passion, and now organisation of the fans.
Keep an eye on the CEO tho'
Thanks for watching, good luck.
I am a Southend fan, Ron Martin has destroyed us and lied about it day after day. I am hoping once this is over we can start again as Southend City.
Me too!
It’s all about property development. The place where you are with the blue banner at fossetts farm is some of the little green space Southend has so it’s not ideal to see it get built on. It’s going to be a soulless expensive experience vs the roots hall experience . Great coverage and well done on getting those interviews. You should think about a career in journalism.
Thanks for watching. It seems that’s all he bought the club for. Looking at the pictures, the new ground would be one of those soulless modern bowls, it’s a shame they are moving.
@@TFSS totally agree. I drive past colchester United stadium and it’s precisely that. Modern, soulless tat. It’s a shame so much of the country is headed in that direction. Property developers and modern architects have a lot to answer for! It’s sad to see so much of Essex lose it’s soul whereas other areas like Cornwall are more successful against attacks on their architectural heritage.
@@krob2327 You're right about modern stadiums being soulless bowls but the reality is we need a new stadium for the club to progress and attract new fans. Roots Hall, as much as I love it, is decrepit (partly because Ron has neglected it) and there is no room to develop it.
@@josephrutter5160 I understand but I think new stadium will be to extract profit for new owner. Like the whole experience will be more expensive and soulless. Also the martins will own a significant proportion of Southend real estate. I don’t like that it’s a bit naff one family having so much power. So people can’t get rid of the martins even when they leave the club. I implore locals to wake up about that. If you think Ron sees us as human or deserving respect you are wrong. Happy to take this convo elsewhere I have evidence to back up my claims
Great video young man, great insights, but you should be wearing a Southend Utd replica not Spain lol .. thanks for vid
Thank you, haha
We can't allow any goodwill sentiment tonight . it has to be three more points for the pies, but good luck with everything in the future
May the best team win!
@@TFSS no doubt they will :)
Incredible video good shit lad
11:30 the flag has been at half mast ever since the passing of her majesty, sums up the club really, such a shame. Good reporting by the way.
Thank you.
Good luck to you.
Top video - well played!
Thank you!
Now that Southend has been designated as a City, if the present club does not survive beyond March 1st, it would be fitting if The Blues rose again as Southend City.
I’m sure any phoenix club would thrive under fan ownership.
Superb video mate
Glad you enjoyed it
That is so sad being an orient fan I know what you are going through !!
We had a bad owner and we drove him out ,
I don't understand why this is not headline news ?
Thanks for watching, it’s a shame there hasn’t been much coverage.
Things like this will never make the national headlines unless it's a big PL or Championship club. Local TV and newspapers at best.
