    As a note about the claim that Patty Hearst had Stockholm Syndrome, Hearst has since denied that she was brainwashed by her captors and claims that she was simply doing what she had to in order to survive as she sincerely believed the group's claims that they had cells all over the country and would kill her if she resisted in any way. These claims have been debated, some saying that her actions are more indicative of a person convinced of their actions than of a person pretending to comply out of fear for her life, but the existence of Stockholm Syndrome at all has been called in to question by modern psychologists, too. It's all very complicated, but Patty Hearst was still a victim regardless of which explanation you believe in.

      The notion that the Norrmalms Syndrome (colloq. known as Sthlm Syndrome) is under question by "modern" psychologists is a misread people-on-the-street idea. This syndrome has been clarified as well as branched out to dispell misgivings by actual professionals.
      When subjected to threats, terror, possible abuse and other forms of distress by one or more perpetrators, and cognitive dissonance pushes your survival instincts to have you side with your perps to the extent you no longer appease them but actually join them empathically - you're displaying Norrmalms (Sthlm) Syndrome.

    Stockholm syndrome is very capable of that. Especially when the kidnapper is lvl 60 charisma/lying. Brain goes into survival mode etc etc.. dang! Good vid.

    • @Figs3
      @Figs3 5 ปีที่แล้ว +133

      @The REBEL WITHIN it actually is. Your brain can convince you things aren't real or things are different then they actually are. Have you never had a panic attack or a huge rage episode? It's not really you as a person right? But when the brain is under IMMENSE stress it changes you.

    • @CorbCorbin
      @CorbCorbin 5 ปีที่แล้ว +61

      Patty Hearst ended up all in, and basically brainwashed, after she had a psychotic break.
      They left out that she was fucking the leader, or consented after awhile....🥴. Her case is used as an example of Stockholm Syndrome, although there were many who didn’t believe her “official,” story.
      She had her entire perspective on life shifted, from being kidnapped, to being part of the militant group, but they originally only kept her around for money, and possibly to use as a hostage. At least for quite awhile.

    • @CorbCorbin
      @CorbCorbin 5 ปีที่แล้ว +49

      The REBEL WITHIN
      Well, most of the population haven’t been trained by the military.
      You do realize that many POWs sign statements admitting to war crimes, denouncing their country, and all sorts of other crazy shit?
      That’s not enough for a diagnosis of Stockholm Syndrome, but it is from being broken down mentally and physically, often with threats of death.
      So a sheltered, extremely wealthy heiress, to the Hearst empire, who was just a 19 year old, who had never known anything but first class society, is less likely to keep it together than a trained soldier.

    • @CorbCorbin
      @CorbCorbin 5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Figs3
      It seems like @The Rebel Within believes everyone would react the way he imagines he would in the same situation. Not even taking the into account he’s a marine, and the difference that would make, especially compared with a sheltered 19 year old heiress.
      It’s definitely a real diagnosis, and it’s saved the life, or at the least helped some folks escape a kidnapper.
      Once the captor believes they have broken their captive down, they often quit worrying about them escaping.
      I wish I could remember the girl’s name who escaped after being held captive for years. It was a big story, not too long ago. She was left unattended, but she believed they would not just kill her, but her family as well.
      She finally just got the nerve up and got to someone’s home.
      Stockholm Syndrome has varying degrees for sure.
      I mean does @The Rebel not realize how many POWs have signed and spoken Propaganda, in order to stop beatings, and get fed?
      John McCain is one of the most widely known ones.
      Or the dude who crashed a Spy Plane over The Soviet Union.

      The prosecutors told the court that SLA members were feminists and would not have allowed her to be raped. Also, the surviving members said she never saw or heard anything about Patty getting assaulted. She was allegedly in a consenting relationship with Wolfe, who got killed in the standoff & can't defend or incriminate himself.
      She's not in prison because of her rich parents' influence. President Carter commuted her sentence & released her, then President Clinton gave her full pardon. No one knows the truth about the rape but her, but she ain't going to incriminate herself.
