      Glad someone brought up this point, because isn't the Oakeshott Typology contextually based upon a person's particular physique and measurements in order to determine what dimensions their sword would be?
      Maria's rapier could be for someone above the measurements of her physique. Either illegally obtained or salvaged from a dead soldier or man-at-arms, considering she's a revolutionary

    I noticed the small sword being handled strangely by that vampire, but as every other character handle theirs very well it downed on me... that vampire doesn't know how to really fight.
    He is a vampire aristocrat, i doubt he has seriously fought anyone in decades, if even... it is his wife that goes out to hunt people, she clearly knows how to handle a sword.

    I think you're basically right on the money for your point about the smallsword around 5:50
    It looks like one of those choices thats made more due to the composition of the scene, as opposed to something more realistic - I think the animators wanted the vampire to look like it turns into a savage, a monster if you will, when it lunges at you - so they have him hold his limbs outstretched in a telegraphed swing. It certainly reads to me more like an artistic choice, versus one driven by the reality of the situation, if I'm making any sense.

      I like the idea of him being a very old vampire who's fighting style came from old cutting swords and he hasn't had the chance to adapt his skills to a 100% thrusting weapon. Obviously this idea is grasping at straws and animators went with the rule of cool. But still, I do like this idea a lot. Who knows how old this vampire is, cutting swords have been probably the most common swords in history up to that point so who knows how many centuries of muscle memory a vampire like that has about sword fighting. Something like this could very well be written into a good character.

    Given everything they wanted to DO in this season, all the different cultures they wanted to include, *not* doing their research would have been an instant death knell for the whole project. Instead we got some *real* fun stuff out of it.
    I'm pretty sure the vampire nobleman with the small sword was just supposed to explicitly be a loser. His 'stance' in that picture is archetypal 'bowlegged dweeb who doesn't know what he's doing', and that was kind of his character too. Vampires in general fell a long, LONG way from Dracula's time. Certain exceptions aside.
    There are the obvious cultural elements, but there's also the "What's that vampire?" game you can play. Orlox is a Peuchen, for example. Drolta Tzuentes is a Sasanbonsam, alongside being a reference to a specific Castlevania monster it would be spoilers to say. The deity that gets mentioned a lot is often considered to be the first vampire in mythology period, given how old the culture is.
    Didn't expect to get a vid like this from Skall. Really happy about it, since I didn't even parse some of this while watching. Shashkas are cool, I want one now. Just, gauntlets first.

      Also the vampire queen, Erzsebet Báthory was a FREAKING REAL HUNGARIAN COUNTESS FROM THE LATE 1500's,
      How much the character was based on the real person you ask?
      Well, the real life countess, Ecsedi Báthori Erzsébet (the same name in the native form), accused of torturing peasant girls, exactly the same way it was in the show, drinking and bathing in theyr blood to obtain theyr youth. Later, actually after her death, she was accused of incest, necromancy, the list just went on and on.
      Not a single testemony was offered by someone that whitnessed the crimes, only second hand accounts were presented, also no evidences were presented, only the testemony of someone that "saw the mutilated bodies and the still alive victims begging to die".
      But she was convicted; it was a conspiracy to remove her family from power, they were the local pain in the ass for the Hapsburgs.

    The musket bardiche would work, although the rest hand will have to be uncomfortably far forward. (The steel butt would give it an interestingly "quick" feel in melee)
    The barrel alongside the blade gunblades were just as accurate as a dedicated firearm of the same barrel length. (This is pre-rifled barrel, round lead ball era - so not really accurate by our standards, but not bad by the standards of the era.)

    You put an axe blade on a musket and you would have a damn effective and stout axe with out doubt and muskets being single shot with logn reload times i am honestly quite shocked that it was never done especially during the civil war when you had people fighting with oversized bowie knives. My one grandfather (couple or 3 greats back) lost his left arm to a musket ball healed up from it and continued his fight against the south with just his bowie and a pistol. He was a traitor to the south and was caught running freed slaves to the north.
    So large oversized weapons were not unheard of and i just find it odd no one back then thought of putting a axe blade on a musket

    • @carloshenriquezimmer7543
      @carloshenriquezimmer7543 ปีที่แล้ว

      When muskets began to be used the "pike and shot" formations (crossbow shots earlier) were standart fare all around europe and asia. Axes are not very usefull in a tigh packed formation, without space to swing it around.
      They are very short in comparison to 5 meter pikes. Also not the best weapon against cavalary, pikes are much better.
      Muskets with a spike/sword bayonet doubles as a short pike, good agaisnt cavalary, do not need to swing it around, just stab. Being removable makes it easier to clean the weapon too.
      It just works better all around.
      Those bardiches were used by the strelet, a force of heavy infantary militias designed by Ivan The Terrible, more to quell peasant rebelions than war, more of a terror weapon. Worse than seing your friends shot is to see them chopped to pieces.
      Having a pistol and a big knife, a saber or even a tomahawk works better too, does not impede the usage of the firearm and there are some utilities for a blade that don't work if it is fixed to a gun.

    ACTUALLLLLLLLY, having the extra weight at the front of the barrel would make steady aiming easier, not harder.
    More exhausting, sure. But that's what you do if you want to stabilize your aim.

    • @Skallagrim
      @Skallagrim  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It would reduce muzzle flip (which is obviously not relevant for single-shot guns), but I find aiming with a muzzle-heavy firearm awkward.
