I don't want the gov't deciding what I will eat. The food stamp program is a subsidy to the Agricultural Industry. That's why it's administered by the USDA. Unfortunately in a society where there is 41 million people homeless, that doesn't recognize your unemployed status because you haven't filed for unemployment compensation this week because your account has run out and yet they tell everybody that there is a 4.1% unemployment rate this week, and it takes 250K - 300K new jobs created each month to cover the number of 16 year olds coming into the American job market so they never hire these kids, who sit in their parents basements etc., playing video games. What kind of crap do you think this gov't would feed you?
They already do this. It is called TFAP. It used to be called commodities. I think it started in the depression. It would be hard to feed a family on what you get there. It is just supposed to be a help.

It's meant to be a stepping stone and historically it's been used that way by most people with a minority of exceptions. But it has come to a point where companies that employ people are forcing them into positions to require welfare to get by for longer than they used to. Walmart, for example, keeps most of their employees part time so as not to have to provide them with certain benefits and relies on welfare to cover the rest. An ungodly number of Walmart employees are also on at least one assistance program as well. Our taxes literally go to allowing Walmart to keep their bottom line fat. And lots of corporations do the same thing. Walmart doesn't even allow employee discounts on food and put their checks on cards rather than handing over the money by check for them to put where they decide. Card systems like that can come with hidden fees just to use them or get their own damn money, like what McDonald's go caught doing. Businesses are abusing the welfare system in the US more than the people. It's like a loophole that just tears itself bigger every year as we subsidies profitable corporations and allow people to stay in poverty no matter how many hours at how many jobs they work. Regulations could fix this, but people are so phobic of even common sense regulations these days it's practically impossible to fix the problem in a rational manner. The entire concept of how our economy should work is getting in the way of fixing these problems so that welfare isn't as necessary because of corrupt corporate tricks.
My niece has been on it for ever now. AND her mom. Both of them. She's my step sister so for years she wasn't a part of the family at all. I just met her within 4 years ago. BOTH my step sister and my niece live in the projects all there lives and been on food stamps all there lives. In fact she said "she can't remember a time when they didn't have it" so its not that short of a period. Someone that doesn't realize that food stamps saves them money comes to comment. 1-2 cents in taxes for food stamps during a recession is far cheaper than the medical coverage that would be required if they were abolished. It's an investment. Most people on food stamps are often working poor, if they cannot continue working because they starved to death then they are not earning money and spending money that helps the economy and makes your job possible. You could ofcourse eliminate the problems with food stamps by raising the minimum wage to meet what it should be according to inflation rate increases and working poor wont need them anymore then it is just unemployed, disabled, and retirement. Unemployed could be solved by eligibility time limits unless they are also on unemployment which shouldn't count toward a lifetime limit as it helps them get a new job by allowing them to allocate more funds to travel and grooming costs. But you are "Oh no my penny" and no alternative or realization that the penny is well spent for food stamps rather than a whole quarter more for Medicaid. Surprised conservatives can make money in investments really but they always hate investing a small amount today to save a much larger amount later which shows in our crumbling infrastructure and their general hate for assistance programs. They will never understand "Save a penny today and spend a dollar tomorrow" is a terrible business practice. It's all about that saving the penny and dammed with tomorrow.

Also these are non perishable items that are very unhealthy leading to poorer choices in food which would lead to more people that would develop to people having more health issues. Inflation almost has quadrupled compared to the rate that minimum wage has . the problem is that their are way more people who aren't rich vs. Those who are which means they are the ones being screwed. Let's be clear. NO-ONE receives Snap benefits (food stamps) for being poor. You have to be elderly, disabled or working low income. If you do NOT work, you do NOT get food stamps. Let's clarify that before any fool comes on here and states that lazy non-working individuals receive stamps. The laws were changed already, it doesn't happen anymore. And if you disagree with low income WORKING individuals receiving this, then ask yourself why we pay so many people so poorly. Because if we didn't, stamps would be obsolete. And if you think that they should all just "get better jobs", please use your brain and realize that SOMEONE has to do the "dirty work" and there is A LOT of dirty work to be done in the U.S. Teens and bored housewives can't cover it all. But at the same time, they don't expect you to do what you labeled as "Dirty jobs". And I can say that as A) I HAVE received SNAP while unemployed. B) My sister is a social worker in a different county who deals with TANF & SNAP cases.
InuKun2008, when you're on government benefits such as SNAP, you either have to be working a minimum wage job, or doing 20 hrs per week of volunteer work while looking for a minimum wage job. Either way, able-bodied adults have to be working to some capacity in order to receive food stamps. Serenadesong, was absolutely correct.

When my family was in a though spot a while back and we were on food stamps and going to our local food bank they had unmarked cans of meat, we called "mystery meat" because you really couldn't tell what it is. It just tasted like, well, meat to be honest and it was a weird indistinguishable brown color. That's probably the kinda shit they'll be sending if this somehow passes (hopefully it doesn't).
Some canned foods such as meat will remain edible long after the expiration date but acidic foods like tomato products and fruit often will eat through the can and go bad.

The actual maximum SNAP benefit this year is $192 for a single person. Anyone receiving less than that has countable income the government thinks they should be spending on food. I get the full $192 and it gets me to the end of the month though that could be because I cook everything from scratch and live in an agricultural region with a year round growing season.

No one agonizes more about what groceries they can get to keep their family fed and healthy for the month than someone on food stamps. Making it more difficult on the working poor and their families is a disgustingly see through plan to put more money in the pocket of a few select corporations. The program's "burden" is nothing compared to other subsidies and spending like corporate, military, and wall building. None of the food will be fresh. Canned vegetables and generic cereal aren't healthy options. Making my own iced tea was cheaper, and buying fresh/frozen easier. Now that I have a decent job, and don't qualify for food stamps, I have to struggle to feed my family and am forced to buy cheaper stuff that isn't as healthy. Its ridiculous.
Canada, like western europe, is a democratic socialist country. Essential services are state ran or subsidised, non-essential stuff is free market. When I was an E6 in the Navy with 2 small kids stationed in Mississippi, We qualified for food stamps. My wife also worked in the Day care where our children stayed or we wouldn't have made ends meet. I was embarrassed to use them. We drank a lot of Kool Aid and spaghetti with toast was the norm. I retired with 24 years as an E8. That's been a long time ago. I don't know how a young military family is making it now.

Most of the "lazy welfare queens" Republicans rant about are military veterans. The majority of food stamps applicants work full time jobs as it's a requirement. Unemployed applicants are only approved in special circumstances like the military veterans. Republican states keep on removing those waivers for military veterans. The number of food stamp applicants went down but the military veterans went starving in the streets instead because nobody would hire them.
A lot of veterans have PTSD this makes it difficult for them to transition back to a normal life and hold a job. But then since they paid such a terrible price to farther the interest America's elites like keeping the petrol dollar the status qua maybe they deserve a free hand out.
Dietary constrictions make this near impossible to do. People can be allergic to all sorts of things. My friend is allergic to peaches, I'm allergic to pineapple, another friend can't eat grapes. I have clients that can't eat red meat or diary or pork. There are too many complications. And that isn't even debating whether or not the government should decide what people eat.
My point is that allergies vary widely. Including, common foods. Pineapple juice is in a surprisingly large amount of things. Further, people who have allergies can DIE if they eat them. It is impossible to provide completely allergy free food to everyone (you'd have to have such a degree of customization that it would def be cheaper to just have them shop for themselves). Thus why shopping for yourself is best as you can pick items that don't conflict with your survival. Frankly, I have no problem with my taxes going to support individuals who are poor and need to eat. And I don't think I have the right to tell people what they can and can't eat on food stamps.

Between the ages of 21 and 22 my mom started to develop early onset alzheimers and it got to a point when she could not work anymore. I had a part time job and I had to look out for her. Food Stamps helped us afford food.

I don't know what's the amount of income that can be made per month to still qualify for that program but just 10 yrs. ago it was $505 a month. But it has come to a point where companies that employ people are forcing them into positions to require welfare to get by for longer than they used to. Walmart, for example, keeps most of their employees part time so as not to have to provide them with certain benefits and relies on welfare to cover the rest. An ungodly number of Walmart employees are also on at least one assistance program as well.
Our taxes literally go to allowing Walmart to keep their bottom line fat. And lots of corporations do the same thing. Walmart doesn't even allow employee discounts on food and put their checks on cards rather than handing over the money by check for them to put where they decide. Card systems like that can come with hidden fees just to use them or get their own damn money, like what McDonald's go caught doing.
Businesses are abusing the welfare system in the US more than the people. It's like a loophole that just tears itself bigger every year as we subsidies profitable corporations and allow people to stay in poverty no matter how many hours at how many jobs they work.
Regulations could fix this, but people are so phobic of even common sense regulations these days it's practically impossible to fix the problem in a rational manner. The entire concept of how our economy should work is getting in the way of fixing these problems so that welfare isn't as necessary because of corrupt corporate tricks.
My niece has been on it for ever now. AND her mom. Both of them. She's my step sister so for years she wasn't a part of the family at all. I just met her within 4 years ago. BOTH my step sister and my niece live in the projects all there lives and been on food stamps all there lives. Any changes made to welfare programs should be better and easier, not worse. Someone that doesn't realize that food stamps saves them money comes to comment. 1-2 cents in taxes for food stamps during a recession is far cheaper than the medical coverage that would be required if they were abolished. It's an investment. Most people on food stamps are often working poor, if they cannot continue working because they starved to death then they are not earning money and spending money that helps the economy and makes your job possible. You could ofcourse eliminate the problems with food stamps by raising the minimum wage to meet what it should be according to inflation rate increases and working poor wont need them anymore then it is just unemployed, disabled, and retirement. Unemployed could be solved by eligibility time limits unless they are also on unemployment which shouldn't count toward a lifetime limit as it helps them get a new job by allowing them to allocate more funds to travel and grooming costs.
But you are "Oh no my penny" and no alternative or realization that the penny is well spent for food stamps rather than a whole quarter more for Medicaid. Surprised conservatives can make money in investments really but they always hate investing a small amount today to save a much larger amount later which shows in our crumbling infrastructure and their general hate for assistance programs. They will never understand "Save a penny today and spend a dollar tomorrow" is a terrible business practice. It's all about that saving the penny and dammed with tomorrow.

Let's be clear. NO-ONE receives Snap benefits (food stamps) for being poor. You have to be elderly, disabled or working low income. If you do NOT work, you do NOT get food stamps. Let's clarify that before any fool comes on here and states that lazy non-working individuals receive stamps. The laws were changed already, it doesn't happen anymore. And if you disagree with low income WORKING individuals receiving this, then ask yourself why we pay so many people so poorly. Because if we didn't, stamps would be obsolete. And if you think that they should all just "get better jobs", please use your brain and realize that SOMEONE has to do the "dirty work" and there is A LOT of dirty work to be done in the U.S. Teens and bored housewives can't cover it all. "Better jobs" are far more scarce than "dirty jobs", that's one reason they are considered better.

When my family was in a though spot a while back and we were on food stamps and going to our local food bank they had unmarked cans of meat, we called "mystery meat" because you really couldn't tell what it is. It just tasted like, well, meat to be honest and it was a weird indistinguishable brown color. That's probably the kinda shit they'll be sending if this somehow passes (hopefully it doesn't).

The actual maximum SNAP benefit this year is $192 for a single person. Anyone receiving less than that has countable income the government thinks they should be spending on food. I get the full $192 and it gets me to the end of the month though that could be because I cook everything from scratch and live in an agricultural region with a year round growing season.

Making my own iced tea was cheaper, and buying fresh/frozen easier. Now that I have a decent job, and don't qualify for food stamps, I have to struggle to feed my family and am forced to buy cheaper stuff that isn't as healthy. Its ridiculous.

When I was an E6 in the Navy with 2 small kids stationed in Mississippi, We qualified for food stamps. My wife also worked in the Day care where our children stayed or we wouldn't have made ends meet. I was embarrassed to use them. We drank a lot of Kool Aid and spaghetti with toast was the norm. I retired with 24 years as an E8. That's been a long time ago. I don't know how a young military family is making it now.

Most of the "lazy welfare queens" Republicans rant about are military veterans. The majority of food stamps applicants work full time jobs as it's a requirement. Unemployed applicants are only approved in special circumstances like the military veterans. Republican states keep on removing those waivers for military veterans. The number of food stamp applicants went down but the military veterans went starving in the streets instead because nobody would hire them.
A lot of veterans have PTSD this makes it difficult for them to transition back to a normal life and hold a job.
But then since they paid such a terrible price to farther the interest America's elites like keeping the petrol dollar the status qua maybe they deserve a free hand out.

Dietary constrictions make this near impossible to do. People can be allergic to all sorts of things. My friend is allergic to peaches, I'm allergic to pineapple, another friend can't eat grapes. I have clients that can't eat red meat or diary or pork. There are too many complications. And that isn't even debating whether or not the government should decide what people eat.
My point is that allergies vary widely. Including, common foods. Pineapple juice is in a surprisingly large amount of things. Further, people who have allergies can DIE if they eat them. It is impossible to provide completely allergy free food to everyone (you'd have to have such a degree of customization that it would def be cheaper to just have them shop for themselves). Thus why shopping for yourself is best as you can pick items that don't conflict with your survival. Frankly, I have no problem with my taxes going to support individuals who are poor and need to eat. And I don't think I have the right to tell people what they can and can't eat on food stamps.

Between the ages of 21 and 22 my mom started to develop early onset alzheimers and it got to a point when she could not work anymore. I had a part time job and I had to look out for her. Food Stamps helped us afford food.

They're wanting to cut Medicaid to help pay for the tax cuts just passed. I don't know what's the amount of income that can be made per month to still qualify for that program but just 10 yrs. ago it was $505 a month. DJFM 2010 Ever heard of variety? Some canned veggies can be organic, non BPA lining, etc. Also, who said people just buy canned and bagged shit at grocery store. I know a fully vegan woman with stamps and still has to budget what she has because food is literally so expensive. Also the water in her town is poisoned due to big plants pouring toxins in her water so she has to buy jugged water for ALL her needs. Theyve literally been dumping huge amounts of toxic waste in the water for 40+ years and it's just now getting exposure and media attention.

If you ever worked for a food distributor that had a USDA contract for distribution you would rethink nothing wrong, and quite tasty idea after seeing multiple full truckloads of the stuff go bad and pop the cans oozing the most vile smelling goo you can imagine while the commercial loads came and went with very few incidents... like one can in one box on one pallet of 64 other boxes with 6 #10 cans in them every tenth truckload. That's allot of cans.
