  • During halftime of a 2006 NFL Monday Night Football Game on ESPN between the New England Patriots and Minnesota Vikings, for some reason, ESPN thought it would be a good idea to have a mascot race featuring their personalities. The show was a disaster; fans booed, the reviews were scathing, and the show never happened again. This is the story behind the Monday Night Football disaster

The funniest thing to me about this race is that a Steve Young mascot won this race in Minnesota, considering the fact one of the signature highlights of the actual Steve Young is a game-winning run against...the Vikings.

Fred Gaudelli produced NBC’s broadcast of the first regular season game in JerryWorld. He said that before the game he got a letter from someone in the NFL saying they were happy that NBC was covering the game and not ESPN. The letter said, and I paraphrase, “With NBC it will be all about the Cowboys and the NFL. With ESPN it’s all about ESPN.” This “race” proved that person right, as did the re-opening of the Superdome earlier in the season. That night ESPN needed rotator cuff surgery after patting themselves on the back so much.

One other reason ratings for "NFL Monday Night Football" fell when the series was moved to ESPN was this:
Through 2005, the NFL considered the Monday night series to be the league's premiere TV package.
When the Monday night games moved from ABC to ESPN and the Sunday night games moved from ESPN to NBC, the league began considering the Sunday night games as the league's top TV package, especially as late season games could be moved from Sunday afternoon to Sunday night to insure the best matchups were shown to the entire country in prime-time instead of regionally on Sunday afternoon.

No wonder why it stunk... no one knew what they were doing save maybe the Steve Young mascot... but even that person lost Steve's head.

The point about it "not being able to reach the target audience" kind of falls flat when you realize there were plenty of kids awake to try and appeal to. One could argue that the stupidity of this idea carries with it a curiosity factor that makes a stunt like this worth a shot. Heck I almost walk away from the TV during halftime shows but had I been watching this I might have stayed and watch just to see if it were to be a debacle. Wonder what happened to those fantastic oversized masks.
Also, "... which is worse than if he did nothing but spike the ball into the ground on every single play" (heard at 14:50) is becoming one of your signature lines. :)

Well the FACT is that when you have 2 teams such as the New England Patriots the Minnesota Vikings who COMBINED are WORSE than a 39.6 and should just SPIKE the football into the ground on EVERY single OFFENSIVE play, they don't DESERVE a DECENT halftime show.

I popped hard when you mentioned the Brewers sausage race first. I was at one of the first ones when they had actual mascots. It used to be something they did on the scoreboard. But I remember being at a game where they still had it on the scoreboard. But then the live sausages suddenly busted out of left field, then ran the final leg of the race.
Call me a homer, but the Brewers don't get enough credit for what they've contributed to American sports culture.

Here's another idea for a video:
While the NFL usually never fkexes a Sunday afternoon game to Monday night, it did happen once because the home team's stadium was going to have to be used on a Sunday for the seventh and deciding game of baseball's World Series. The football game was moved to Monday night.
That game got shown on the ABC-TV affiliates in the two cities whose local teams were playing; every other ABC station got the originally scheduled Monday night game.
