- In this tutorial I’m demonstrating how to paint a mottled background. This ia a very easy tutorial but serves 2 different purposes:
1) It is a very versatile background to use for a variety of subjects like painting wildlife or still-life or portraits
2) 2) this serves as an excellent practice to improve your blending skills with acrylics
If you are interested on the Bird and nests painting I did on this background here’s the link below:

This painting can be done in oils as well using similar techniques. As it is all done in wet a on wet technique it will be even easier to work with oil paints.

this is one of my favorite kind of background!!
Pretty combination :) Love it the way you blend
So useful! My blending skills have improved a lot 💕

This was such a useful lesson. I always get stuck on backgrounds. Thank you.
I plan to do some some more background ideas in coming weeks, when I get back to the schedule
Sayanti Fine Arts I look forward to seeing them. Can you do one adding a background to an existing picture? I painted three multicoloured horses and left the background plain, thinking they were too colourful for one, but it looks wrong and I have no idea what to do when there’s already an image on the canvas. If not, I still want to see your next background lessons (or any angels you want to do 😉😊).
I prefer doing the background first or simultaneously.... but it can be done.... I would a mottled background with pastel shades for multicolored horses!!
Sayanti Fine Arts thank you! I will try that.
Thank you so much, this video saved me in a time of need!
This is so helpful. Thank you! ❤

Thank you mam, it was very useful 😍
Thank you for the lovely tutorial. Did you dilute the acrylic paint with water first?
Hi...easy to do
🙌
Your voice is so calming 🥺
Beautiful 👌👌👍😘

Thanks for teaching mam..😇
you're welcome
that was very helpful ....thanks for sharing
my pleasure entirely, thanks!
Thx so much 4 the video.
my pleasure
Thank you so much for this video. I have started doing videos recently and my next project may include a blurry background and explaining it can be confusing. Is it ok if I link to you when I do the video? Thank you!
sure.... you can do that!!
Thankyou
This is great. I have a question: My acrylic painting has dried so can I go back and add some blurry places in the background after it has dried?
sure you can. and you can use a combination of opaque and translucent paint/ colors in order to cover or show as much as you want of the current painting/ background.
Can we use poster colours
I just switched to artist paints from craft paint which I've been so good at but heard I shouldn't sell my paintings if I used craft paint... But this thicker artist paint is so sticky!! Ive redone this background 3 times because it dried so fast and my brush gets sticky!! I've diluted with water too! I'm so frustrated! I want to go back to my tried and true craft paint but feel like a phoney...
But one more thing,,,plz mention ur colors for beginners like wat color u r using,Persian blue ,aqua marine wat shade n how much quantity u r taking in a brush ......plz mention the shades ....I wanna make this background
Can I use wood instead of canvas for the background? Does it need any preparation? Thank you!
you surely can use wood as the surface.but you will need to prime it first - I would recommend an acrylic primer
What type of canvas is it ?
What did you spray the canvas with in the very beginning just before you put paint on it?
just water... to keep the surface moist
Can i use cardboard instead of canvas for this technique.
yes you can, but you will have to prime the surface of cardboard to make it smooth. Also, cardboard is not archival, so the work you do may not last.
Can you share link of your make up brush used for blending
this is one I have used a lot:
www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01EO2KP2M/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=sayantichaudh-20&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B01EO2KP2M&linkId=688836d9b7496399b1cc08dd80ef07ed
how can you go about removing the brush strokes if you don't have one of those makeup brushes?
if you dont have a mop brush/ makeup brush, that is totally cool.......any soft round brush would do
sdh791 Hi, it really is worth it to buy a mop brush, they are less than £5.00 and soooooo wonderful for blending out brush strokes and for softening the look of the paint. I tried for so long to be successful at this background but it never worked till I bought the mop brush.
Is this canvas ?
Can this be done on paper?
absolutely.... any smooth and heavyweight paper should work
Can u please name the Color’s u used. 🙏
white, pthalo and cobalt blue, cadmium yellow, dark green (can't remember the name of the shade) and very tiny little black
Where is Maa .is she with you or she is at Kolkatta
good to hear from you.... she is in Kolkata
Not a tutorial
Nope. You go WAYYY too fast.
