Man... it's hard to overstate how influential Sailor Moon was on an entire generation of anime nerds in the west. For so many of us, particularly middle and elder millennial girls growing up in the 90s, it was not only our gateway to anime and Japanese culture in general, it was also the first time many of us had ever seen an entirely female-centric action superhero story. It was SO important.

Sailor Moon is from the 90s, 1992 to be exact. Sailor Moon belongs in a certain genre of anime called Magical Girl genre. It's basically about girls in cute outfits who fight monsters using magic, and Sailor Moon is like one of the forerunners of that genre which basically created a lot of the tropes the genre is well known for and popularized it.
There's also another series of Sailor Moon called Sailor Moon Crystal which is a remake of Sailor Moon and it started in 2014.
Sailor Moon is one of those anime responsible for popularizing anime in the west together with Dragon Ball Z.

    Some things you got right:
    1) Usagi (the protagonist) is a princess.
    2) There is a lot of slice-of-life / normal life situations.
    3) They fight aliens.
The sailors are guardians of the Earth and the Moon Kingdom (which was destroyed) that fight threats that come from within the solar system (the inner guardians: Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Venus) and from outside (the outer guardians: Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, Saturn). Sailor Moon is the reincarnation of the Moon Princess. The anime in itself its great, I think it is my favorite of all times, but I don't think it is for everyone. There is a lot of comedy, a lot of slice-of-life moments, a lot of development for the characters and their relationships, a lot of fighting the monster of the week, and a loooot of emotional and memorable moments. At the beginning it might get tiring because its just random episodes until the fight really emotional moments with the second villain.

Although not always aliens... I guess depending on how you define aliens, most of them arguably aren't aliens... Or they could mostly be aliens? I mean most of them are essentially human, but then a bunch of them didn't originate on Earth... I forget...

    • @RPMizu
      @RPMizu ปีที่แล้ว +8

@@KitsyX Yeah, they are not always alien, but most of them are. The overall enemy, Chaos, is somewhat alien and somewhat not, because it is everywhere in the universe. Beryl and the generals were from Earth, Ail and Ann were alien, Black Moon was from Nemesis (although their clan originated on Earth, the ones we see should have been born on Nemesis(?) based on age), Death Phantom was from Nemesis 100%, Death Busters were aliens from outside the Solar system, and also was Galaxia and the Animamates. And although Amazon (Trio and Quartet) were from Earth, Neherenia was from the Moon, so she was technically alien to Earth too. But yeah, there are some antagonists that are from Earth, especially in season 1.

Sailor Moon the anime came out in 1992 & became vastly popular especially overseas. This series basically gave life to the magical girl era. The main characters referred to as Sailor Senshi, are based on the 9 planets. (at the time Pluto was considered a planet then scientist went on to change it to other things.) The the Titled Character Sailor Moon is not only a Senshi but something else. The first season is the Dark Kingdom Arc, R the seconded season is the Dark Moon Arc, S the third season is Death Busters Arc, Super S the fourth season is Dead Moon Circus Arc, & lastly the fifth season the Stars Arc. Its full of romance, character growth, sorrow & battles. Depending on how you are it can be an emotional ride. The series also has special episodes & 3 movies during its original run. Then the series was given a reboot in 2011 called Sailor Moon Crystal covering the 1st 3 Arcs. Sailor Moon Eternal which covers the 4th Arc was made into a 2 part movie. Now we are waiting for the next 2 part movie that covers the final season Sailor Moon Stars that is scheduled to release this year.

    • @OfficialSailorDeimos
      @OfficialSailorDeimos ปีที่แล้ว +11

Sailor Moon is basically a reincarnation of all life in our universe a millennium later. Forces that caused the Senshi's to awaken in the the Dark Kingdom Arc are the ones that caused the reason for reincarnation. Then R deals with the past meeting the future. S deals with 3 more senshi having been awoken by forces that sneaked in from the outer solar system & to stop the Messiah of Silence from awakening. Super S is also called the Dream Arc where the villains come from the dark side of the moon in search of beautify dreams as they hunt down Pegasus. Stars Arc is about the Senshi wars that took place outside our peaceful system.

Sailor Moon is basically the parent of the magical girl genre. It isn't the first one, but its the most enduring one.
Yeh, the first FOUR seasons of Sailor Moon used the same song. It was about 160 episodes of the original show. Only season 5 had a different song. I don't speak Japanese, though I've learned plenty of random words over the years from watching anime, but I know that song by heart and can sing it in Japanese.
The pink haired little girl is Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask's daughter from the future. Don't ask how old she is; her back story involves time travel, temporal stasis and immortality so who the hell knows.

I'd say it's more the parent of merging the magical girl and super sentai genres. You had magical girls like Sally The Witch in the '60s, then ass-kicking fighter magical girls like Cutie Honey in the '70s, then Sailor Moon having a full colour-coded team of ass-kicked fighter magical girls in the same vein as Power Rangers (aka Super Sentai) or Ninja Turtles.

honestly a good way to think about sailor moon (and the magical girl genre in general) is "power rangers but all girls"
generally about half of the episode is the daily life of the main characters, which in the case of sailor moon since they're 14 at the start of the series, is mostly either school life or a bit of romantic drama, and the other half they transform into their magical girl selves to fight the monster of the week, with a slowly building overall plot that builds into both halves of the episodes. major tropes of the genre, and honestly modern anime as a whole, were massively popularized here. also, for as cute and sweet as it might seem, the magical girl genre has ALWAYS been darker than it first appears.

I'm from Argentina. Back in 1992-1995, Sailor Moon and Saint Seiya were the series that definitely opened the doors to anime in the region. Before that in the 80s there were very good series like Macros (the Robotech version) that hit hard, but at that time it was something more niche.
Then came great series like Dragon Ball and the rest is history.
I suggest that you react to the Saint Seiya openings now that you already did the Sailor Moon ones.

Sailor Moon has 200 episodes in 5 seasons and aired from 1992-1997 on Japanese television, there are also 3 cinema movies.
In short, Sailor Moon is about the so-called Sailor Warriors, whose task is to protect the Earth and the solar system from evil forces that want to take it. In the process, you find out more and more about the individual characters and new ones are added more and more.
Sailor Moon was my very first anime that I watched and I love it to this day! The story is partly quite serious, but also has many funny scenes. I personally have learned from Sailor Moon to never give up and always believe in myself no matter how bad the situation looks.

It was, of course, the DiC dub/localization, which in retrospect is a pretty terrible and mutilated version - though my six-year-old self found it amazing. Sailor Moon is absolutely a classic, it's a few decades old and one of the highest appraised 'magical girl' kind of series. The opening and outro themes are pretty iconic to most western fans of anime from back during it's airing runtime. Another series that also has some really well known opening and even more so, outro themes, from that era would be "Inuyasha". The outro themes to that series are beautiful songs that are still amazing to this day.

I watched the original series when it came out in English. I would recommend checking out the English op as well for sailor moon. This is an OG and, in my opinion, got a lot of early female anime watchers. Yes, there was obviously male viewer like me but at the time this had a mostly female audience. It's a great show about the struggles of a high school girl. Love, fights and magic. A triumph of the Magical Girl Genre. It's basically Power Rangers. But normally an all-female cast. Idk if you would enjoy it. But give it a try. I would watch your reactions.

As a Canadian guy born in 1989, I guess I'm a bit of an outlier. Sailor Moon took off in Canada in 1995, while its US debut was less successful and took a while longer to catch on. For boys born a couple years later, testosterone-fueled DBZ would be their early-childhood anime, but when I was six that hadn't made its way across the ocean yet, so as far as action anime went, Sailor Moon was the be-all-end-all and my entire point of reference.
It's kind of interesting to think about in retrospect. This was at a time when there was such a hard line between what was marketed to boys and what was marketed to girls that even four-year-olds would have already internalized what they were "supposed" to be into and what they definitely weren't. There was a bright pink-and-white aisle in the toy store, and as a boy you knew you wouldn't want to be caught dead walking through there. Then came the confusing anomaly of Sailor Moon. Its feminine aesthetic immediately set off those well-honed "this is a girl show, do not watch this, or at the very least do not let anyone ever know you've watched this" alarms in your head. Yet it seemed _so damn cool._ It was like Power Rangers and Ninja Turtles, yet with its own unique vibe that made it distinct. Plus it having an ongoing plot kept you constantly intrigued about what would happened next. (Which is funny considering how episodic Sailor Moon is, but that just goes to show how much _more_ episodic its western counterparts were at the time.)
The result of this was a phenomena someone could have written a graduate thesis on: if guys (and by "guys" I mean 6-to-9-year-old boys) were hanging out watching TV and Sailor Moon came on, you could sense the unspoken agreement. We all knew that if anyone at any moment said "eww, this is a girl show", everyone would have been obligated for the sake of their male cred to immediately agree and say "yeah, change the channel". Yet, knowing that we all wanted to watch it, as long as no one brought up the obvious girliness, we could all safely not acknowledge it and watch without compromising our perceived masculinity.

Two other shoujo OP from the mid-90's that I LOVE are from The Vision of Escaflowne("Yakusoku wa Iranai") and Revolutionary Girl Utena("Rinbu Revolution"). One season each(so only one OP each). VERY different shows. Fun fact, Utena's directer was Kunihiko Ikuhara, who also directed seasons 2-4 of Sailor Moon!
And Yakusoku wa Iranai is sung by the lead actress of the show itself, which isn't all that common in anime. It was also written by Yoko Kanno, who did Tank! from Cowboy Bebop. Not at all a similar song, however. She also wrote the soundtrack for the show and it's one of my faves of all time, along with Cowboy Bebop.

Sailor Moon is basically the staple and the main progenitor (among others before) of the Magical Girl genere tropes. Magical Girl anime is basically an anime where the protagonists are mainly female (there are male characters but usually are the deuteragonist or tritagonists) and transform into an alter ego because of "magical" means (though in some instances the changes are sci fi based, but looks magical). Normaly the themes of this type of anime are love, romance, frienship between the characters but there are fights, though not as brutal as Dragon Ball or Attack on Titan, at least not normally, Sailor Moon in particular at most only have one or two relative brutal fights (relative to Sailor Moon or magical girl ones, compared to Dragon Ball or Attack on Titan, will be like just a training session for Goku and Vegita or the basic training for the Scout Regiment of Attack on Titan, for a Magical Girl character that would be a brutal battle). In the case of Sailor Moon, it's mostly a story and character driven anime, with the monster of the week as the initial basis for fights but with a real treath as background. Each season has a new treath, with its corresponding monster of the week session. There is a lot of lore behind all of this.
Also, Sailor Moon beheaves mostly like a soap opera, specially the Live Action version (yes, there is a live action tv series and two tv movie specials), I used to joke that the Live Action surpases your basic Mexican Telenovela by light years, even the modern ones, even when it has power rangers level of fighting and fantasy.
Sailor Moon anime came in 1992, so it doesn't follow the modern season episode count, seasons back then were arc based, plus the anime was being produced concurrently with the manga, so the anime adds a lot of filler episodes to compensate the lag of manga chapters releases, so the first season has around 30+ episodes, the second season is completely filler and the third onwards is similar to the first, mix with filler episodes. In 2014 I think there was a remake of the anime called Sailor Moon Crystal, it's a more faithfull adaptation of the manga, so the story goes faster and covers all the same events as the original anime, though even this kind of skips small details that the old anime does kind of cover.
Overall is a very good entry to understand the Magical Girl anime type, while it obviously was made for women and it's heavily popular among women, it also has it's male audience (I honestly just watched it becase of the long legs....ahem, I mean, the art, the art yes, that's why I watched it, has good character art 🤣), but keep in mind, not all magical girl anime will be for male tastes, but some will do.

I recently rewatched the entire sailor stars arc, and it hits so different after watching it as an adult. The moment I realised that the audience knows that a certain someone is already dead, while she's still trying to tell them about things going on at the start of every episode is just heart wrenching.

What an incredible reaction video omg. Sailor Moon has been a huge part of my life growing up and it always makes me smile when someone discovers it or rediscovers it for the first time. The songs are so good, and there’s so many more within the show that are just as awesome

XD The song for sure grows on you. Def a classic, and it's fun to think about how the creator of HxH is married to the creator of Sailor Moon and then you're here just being like 'the op is the same?' It's a classic and a lot of people's nostalgia.

How old is Sailor Moon? It's literally the basis that all magical girl anime took inspiration.
If you haven't already, Fire Force or Darling in the Franxx

Back in the 90s, Sailor Moon was everyone's introduction to anime fandom. At least here in Germany. But we got 3 totally different Openings. They where more like Eurodance-Music or Techno, wich was very popular in Germany back than.
Sailor Moon is still one of the few anime, that I love and appreciate to this day and no episode goes by in in which I don't start crying without end, out of pure nostalgia and drama. That's why i no longer watch it. I get too emotional.
Without Sailor Moon, i wouldn't be an Animefan at all. Thank you Takeuchi Naoko for defining who i am today.
And thank you for reacting :)

Sailor Moon is that anime that as kids boys denied ever watching, but we did, and we were hooked. The anime has a very basic structure, it's like a "monster of the week" with a Big Bad per season. So, it's repetitive, but the characters are what drives the show. Usagi (the protagonist) is one of the funniest girls in anime, and her visual gags are always top notch. You can try and watch it, but be ready for it to feel repetitive and corny, like super corny. Still, Moonlight Densetsu (opening theme) is a banger!

Please check out some other old-school anime openings! :) Would love to see Inuyasha or Digimon! Sailor moon was my childhood. Went to a Catholic school and got in trouble for dressing up as Sailor moon for halloween when I was in kindergarten 🤣
