Off the tee I hit my driver 230-240 yards with a 50 yard dispersion pattern…with a mostly right miss. I hit a fade when the driver is on…it’s a flat slice when it’s not. I hit my 3W 210-220 yards off the tee with about a 30 yard dispersion pattern that is mostly a left miss. There are so many holes where hazards and fairway bunkers are in the exact landing zone for my driver. Add to that if there is any chance for OB or lost ball right off the tee, and I hit my 3W a LOT off the tee. Yeah I know the solution is to fix my swing so I can hit my driver farther…but right now a lot of times it’s just not worth the extra 10-20 yards.

Its hard to hit trees when you are in the fairway. Driver often can bring trouble into play. When we say "fairway" we don't mean the actual fairway. I count light rough right next to fairway the same thing. For amateurs, we are talking about avoiding the trash. If you can hit it that much better with a shorter club, hit the shorter club...

And that’s exactly the intuitive response that most people feel. Strokes gained is nonsense for 99% of people, that play golf. It just nonsense stats that don’t apply. Completely agree. Keep the ball in play. Lay up. And score better. That’s the best advice for almost everyone.

@ You nailed it. My current index is 7.2 (mostly because I shot my 2 personal best rounds in the span of 2 weeks a couple months ago) but my index mostly hovering around 8 - 9 for a couple years. I appreciate you saying my dispersion and distance is good….but I play with some low handicappers and it’s frustrating being out driven by 20 - 40 yards every time and I struggle playing any tee boxes longer than about 6200 yards. My goal has been get to sub 5.9 handicap by my 55th birthday which is in a few days. I didn’t make it but I’m realizing I need more distance and I need to chip and put better to achieve my goal.

@@ThePhilTorretto pretty sure tour dispersion is 60 yards on driver , 30 yards either side of intended line. So yeah, it's fricking good. However, if you go and pick up that extra 40 yards distance your dispersion would go down. So right now long par 4s and long par 3s are a killer. Par 5s your either getting birdie, eagle once and a while on a short par 5. Picking up speed shouldn't be an issue. Lift weights, swing a weighted club, and swing hard at the range. you don't need to do anything fancy in the gym. Any basic 2 day full body strength program will do, once you lift heavy for around 5 to 8 reps per set. Speed stick work is pretty straightforward (but you need to do the gym work to handle the speed stick and not get hurt). And I'm sure you have no problem putting some manners on range balls and swinging out of your socks.

When I retired after 28 years in the foreign service I took a min. wage job at Broad Run Golf in Bristow, VA created in the late 1970s as a golf teaching venue, with 80 stall driving range, 30 heated for year-round use, a short game practice area and a a par 35 nine hole course with two par 5s, three par 3s and par 4 hours which where stratgically challenging. I was able to practice and play for free as an employee and then quit and got a membership, playing that same course a few thousand times until I knew every inch of it and came to appreciate how cleverly it had been designed and that golf is really a match play battle with the designer who understood how players of different levels tend to play and miss and made sure there was a hazard there. 😂
Beginners and intermediate golfers always try to hit ball straight and long and usually miss with a slice and wind up in trouble - placed by the designer of the hole - along the right side 180-200 yards off second set of tees (e.g. men’s / members). Better players will both hit longer and usually miss to the left. This is why on most par 5 holes you’ll usually find the closest fairway bunker on the right and one on the left 20-40 yards further away on the left.
Rick Jacobsen who design the course made several of the holes visual deceptive off the tee. The first hole was an example of this. From the tee box it appears to be wide and straight and perfect for Driver off the tee, but what was not apparent was there was a crest in the fairway at about 200 yards off the men’s tees / 230 off the tips and beyond that the fairway sloped to the right feeding any ball hit past that point down the center into the rough on the right which put the ball ‘short sided’ to the green which ran at a / angle to the fairway. What made it even more deceptive was a grassy berm on the left and trees and cart path and OB on the left at the same distance making aiming there not very visually appealing.
What turned out to be the best strategy for playing the hole for me was to hit a 5 iron draw off the tee landing the ball just short of the grassy berm on the left which put me at the perfect distance and alignment to the long dimension to the green for a 7i fade to the center of the green. The second best scoring option was hitting a draw with Driver and landing to the left in a collection area between the grassy berm and green for a relatively each straight pitch shot. Most of the holes were like that which I didn’t come to appreciate until I could reliably shapes shots at will and started using less than Driver off the tees of par 4s on holes were a miss with Driver was “punitive”.
One of the problems with more modern golf course built during the Tiger boom of the 1990s is they designed reward ‘long and straight’ because of the advances in Drivers and ball and golf marketing starting in the late 90s with every year’s new design being mostly cosmetic but claiming to be “five yards longer” failing to mention the all the irons had been de lofted to the point where now some PW which were traditionally 50° (e.g. PING EYE 2) and reliably 100 yards are now in the low 40’s and able to be hit 150. Fewer holes are laid out with greens that reward the ability to shape shots instead they are smaller and rounder rewarding the used of “lawn dart” 60° wedge shots.
One of the things really liked about the par 3 8th hole at Broad Run was that depending on pin placement it would favor a fade one day and draw the next but never a straight shot because there was deep rough and a cluster of trees behind the green. 😊
The #1 handicap hole was (past tense because it closed) was a real gem. Par 4 off an 40ft elevated tee to a dogleg left fairway with OB trees on the right and a pond running the entire length the first section of fairway which was divided at a diagonal / 200 - 240 yards off tee. It took a very accurate straight shot with Driver to keep the ball on the fairway. Draw with Driver improved the odds if pulled off but any straight shot was OB in the trees. Starting a fade the pond also improved odds of landing just short of the creek but at the risk losing a ball in the water. I discovered I had better success scoring by hitting two four irons, draw then fade and even better success hitting three 8i shots, one to the far end of the fairway below, the second short of the creek, and the third nearly always on the green often close enough for a one-putt par and at worse a bogie.
Given how the course was intended to be used for teaching I thought it a brilliant design - it certainly taught me a lot about course management. 😊

For the average golfer - driver doesn’t work as it’s big misses left or right that results in lost/unplayable ball and an additional 2-3 shots per hole.
Average golfers are better off hitting the shorter club x3 times in succession onto the green and then two put for bogey.
    Simple golf - simple score.

      @edge21str 21 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

Depends. Is the 70 yard slice consistent? If yes, you can play to that, just aim 70 yards left. If a tree or hazard is blocking your path, you chose whichever club is short enough to keep you in play.
Fixing your driver swing in the long run is obviously the better solution, but as long as you are somewhat consistent with your shots, regardless of their shape, you can improve your scores.

Tiger would often hit his stinger rather than a full driver... get the ball in play. Most amateurs, myself included, are going to lose a lot of accuracy playing from the rough. Greens have water, sand, rough around them. Best to try to avoid that by playing from the fairway.

Hit the driver the most in the range. It’s a very important club. Then work on your back up club for narrow holes or holes with a lot of hazards. You also don’t need driver on par 5’s unless you’re trying to get on the green in two.

15-20 handicap here... i see the point of hitting driver most of the time IF my swing is decent that day and IF the hole makes sense for driver. I've sometimes hit what i think is a terrible shot but because i play the correct tees and i hit it 260, i can actually get right thru the trouble. A shorter club hit offline would bring a terrible shot into trouble. Ive hit terrible driver shots that rolled thru bunkers or rolled past the tree trouble. If i were playing the wrong tee box that 260 terrible driver brought trouble into play.

My biggest issue at the moment is trusting my grip. I have a horrible tendency to adjust my grip position in my backswing and paired with my toe miss tendency leads to evil duck hook shots that just fall from the sky. I strike my irons pretty well, but any club with meat on it (hybrid, wood) I just can't hit. I tried teeing off with a 2 iron but my swing speed wasn't enough to get it airborn so I actually lose yardage to my 4 iron which I hit about 190 with a 20 yard rollout. Not an issue for par 4's, but par 5's are an issue. I need to take lessons.

You’re right and wrong at the same time. Amateurs don’t give a rats about putting their drive in the rough mate. It’s behind a tree, into water, into a hazard etc. so pulling back to keep it in play eg have an actual shot no matter the lie is the point. Distance doesn’t help when you punch out from a tree or take a new penalty drop

I’m new to golf but not new to math. I studied engineering and for fun have studied then literature on how statistical frameworks are used in different arenas. I can tell you that strokes gained is nonsense for 99% of people that play golf. It makes sense for tour pros or anyone who plays consistently on high quality courses against another set of similar type players. Outside of that narrow framework it is straight up nonsense.
Mark Twain once said something like this. It’s true. And it becomes more true the more you peel the onion: there are three types of lies. Lies, damned lies and statistics.
More than likely the gentleman in this video just isn’t aware of how bounded and unbounded variables work and more importantly, when the average of a set of numbers actually holds meaning and when it doesn’t. However I refuse to suffer fools. And I require that the people I take seriously actually know what they’re talking about or have the courage to say they don’t. I would respect this advice if it was qualified. But it’s not.
Keep the ball in play. Lay up. And score better. That will never not be the case for 99% of us. And yes I purposefully used a double negative. Sorry.

I think using data from pro golfers is a poor extrapolation to amateurs to suggest to hit driver more because lowering scores for us is more based upon reducing gigantic numbers. @@dejuei think arrcos(sp?) And shotscope have quite a bit of data on amateur golfers. Most 15 handicaps don't re tee and say they're laying 3 anyways...
I've seen and kept track of close to 1000 rounds (work in golf) since reading every shot counts over 5 years ago.
Anecdotally I can say 80+% of 7s or worse come after a drive that is fine.
Other than short par 3s, short par 4s, and short par 5s, you will rarely see legitimate pars or birdies from a 15-20 handicap player unless they hit a good drive. This i believe highlights further the importance of distance and the need to hit driver.
It's probably similar to long term gambling statistics.
No driver doesn't eliminate 8s for a 20, but it does kill their chances of making par. Which adds up more over time all other things being equal.
Sure you can never hit on 14 vs. 7,8,9,10... but the dealer busting doesn't become more likely.
Laying up on a 380 yard shot to 200 and than again to 80 is assuming your accuracy with say a 5 is way higher than it is with driver (it isnt)... and then you're next shot whether it's a punch 7 or full wedge is typically into the last quarter of the hole which typically contains the narrowest part of the fairway giving you another chance to hit a bad shot and compound your bad score even further.
Jon if you're reading further elaboration would be great, I'm sure the statistics bear this out as well.

The really bad golfers don’t track there stats or at least not at the level of the lower handicap golfer, so I don’t trust these stats reflect a 30 handicap golfer’s performance. A good golfers miss is not the same as a bad golfer miss. Occasionally be blocked out by a tree is not the same as ball going OB repeatedly multiple times a round. For the average golfer avoiding big mistakes is most important to lowering scores

I completely disagree with this strategy. I've found that amateurs who have trouble breaking 90 are especially challenged with any club other than driver. The big head driver is easier to hit and goes further but players often forget how to hit an iron. Hitting the 3 wood with a slightly descending blow is basically the iron swing and is so much more important for the full array of shots than the driver swing. If losing 10 or 20 yds off the tee is significantly hurting your game, you have more problems than driver distance. Learn how to hit your irons...please.
