I remember going back in the theaters a second time to see this movie, because up until that point, we had never seen something like this before. We've seen Matrix style martial arts, kung fu super fast exchanges, Jackie Chan stuff, but not this stuff. And I remember, this movie kind of set the bar higher and paved the way for movies like The Raid: Redemption - i.e. having different styles of martial arts and realism. Super cool movie. And wow, Tony Jaa looks so young!
Yeah same here, the connections of punches seemed very real. Thats what was so new about this one. The elbows/knees.
This movie already introduced muay thai to alot of people.
I did the same thing for the matrix returns.however tonys martial arts fights are way better and practical for the most part.

I saw this twice before I started watching the actual plot. The attention deficit disorder trigger level is so high. "I can do all that!". No. No you can't, me.
The guy who plays his cousin George is a super famous comedian over there. You cant turn on the TV without seeing him in some show.
My tribe here in India even nicknamed him 😂. He is super famous among our people, they dubbed 4 of his other comedy movies with all sorts of nonsensical dialogues instead of translating them literally. Super famous.
This movie put Tony Jaa and Muay Thai in movies on the map. It was a global phoenonal back in the early 2000s.
The reason the fight scenes were so life-like, as you said, is because Asian cinematography has very different philosophy in how to edit fight sequences. In western cinema, the camera is almost always behind the actors, and so you don't see the strikes connect, because the actors are punching air. In this movie, you actually get to see the strikes connect, which is much harder for the actors to do in every way (choreography, stunt coordination, etc).
My dad used to watch alot of different movies on repeat and this is one of them this film has a place in my heart
I first saw this movie in my late teens and it was causing a stir in the uk the fight scenes are some of the best I’ve seen it’s because there’s no cgi it’s all realistic no wires and the hits they took u can feel it

I had this movie before anyone knew what it was going to be.. my friend was a English teacher in yangon Burma, on his way back to visit Canada he stopped in Thailand to pick this movie up... came to my house and told me I have to show u something special! Said alright and we watched this movie amazed... didn't even have English subtitles or anything lol.
I highly recommend that if you guys liked this move that you should check out Tom Yum Goong, aka The Protector. Ong Bak and Tom Yum Goong are some of Tony's best work, and The Protector not only has some amazing fight sequences but it has one of the most iconic single shot sequences in action, if not all of cinema.
It's basically Tony Jaa's remake of Bruce Lee's Game of death.
That stairway scene is unbelievable

Need to see number two now. It has considered one of the best non cut fight scene in it. Lots of epic fights in it as well.
Watched it on a bootleg disc in 2004 in our village hall. I swear people were so impressed that the fights were reminded all the time and it was played 4 times back to back that same night. 😂
27:19 Oh yeah, the coin flip, basically they were showing respect. Ting won 3 fights straight, it is the equivalent of a 'hat trick' in hockey. He proved he was a warrior. One punch or one kick knockouts are kind of frowned upon, cause it is considered luck or fluke. So the reason they would not let him leave was he had to prove himself, show you can take it as well as dish it.

Another great Tony Jaa movie I highly recommend is The Protector. The Protector has my favorite fight scenes of all time and even set a record for having the longest single take in a movie. It's crazy.

Ong Bak 2 is one of my favorite martial arts movies of all time! absolutely next level fights! Ong bak 3 continues from 2, not quite as good as 2 but still some incredible fighting!

Thanks to Ong Bak, it brought to light the Thai martial art movie industry to the western audience, and also gave further opportunities for upcoming stunt people. They've got a distinct style and cinematography, so if you enjoyed Ong Bak, I would like to recommend Warrior King, Chocolate, Bangkok Knockous, and Force of Five.

The Protector starring Tony Jaa is an absolute must watch. It's so good.
First movie I saw with Tony Jaa is The Protector, which has way better fighting than this movie. There's a long flight scene shot without any cuts as he enters a building and fights his way to the top that is just awesome. I highly recommend you watch that movie when you get the chance.
I don't really agree. The Protector felt like someone saw Ong Bak and decided to remake it while gimmicking up the fights to try to be "better" but to me it just comes off as trying to be clever while the rest of the movie is just much worse off because of it.

Never forget being able to see this in a select theater and just being mind blown. then hunting it down everywhere until by the luck of the comic con gods Chicago comic con rolled up that summer and bam, a booth with all the fire bootlegs had the thai version with subs. amazing times and Tony Jaa is legend to me : D
Oh thanks a lot for doing this reaction. This movie is absolute nostalgia. I was 10 or 11 years old when I first saw this film and as a kid I was totally amazed by the action sequences. I had seen Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan movies before that which had their own styles but this one was something very different. It felt very natural and raw like the punches and the kicks were really hitting. I remember everytime Ting(Tony Jaa) threw a punch or a kick, I felt as if it was hitting me 😅this movie introduced me to the world of Thai culture, Thai movies and above all Tony Jaa. I've loved him ever since. Also, you're right about the fact that Muay Thai is indeed one of the deadliest martial arts in the world but there's one more martial art deadlier than Muay Thai and it's called Kalaripayattu. It's an Indian martial art with its origins in the Indian state of Kerala. It's sometimes referred to as the mother of all other martial arts since it's believed to be the world's oldest form of martial art and all the others just branched out of it like the Chinese Kung Fu for example. I would love for you to check out the Commando series which has Vidyut Jamwal in the lead. He's a very famous action hero in India and also a famous martial artist. He's even got awards from the Chinese box office for his outstanding action sequences in Commando 3. You guys should definitely check out the series. Stay safe and happy and love from India 😀
So quick and basic explanation of the story: Ong Bak is kind of the end of the story where Ong Bak 2&3 are the beginning; 2&3 are about an ancient warrior named Tian and his story of revenge and dealing with the resulting Karma; Ong Bak 1 is about Ting, the reincarnation of Tian, protecting the statue that played a part in Tian's redemption or enlightenment, hundreds of years later. A bit confusing if you don't have the relevant social baggage

Hey guys, Iam so glad y'all are reacting to this one, this is the one that started Tony JAA on his way to becoming one of the best Action Heroes of the Marshall arts world. An Ong-Bak 2 an 3 are just crazy!!! He is in my top 5 martial artist of all time ( so far ) that is, if you get a chance after you see 2&3 watch some of his demo's he can do some out of this world stuff. An he does his own stunts!!!! Yup that's right . Just check them out, you will not be disappointed!! Promise 😎🍻
Glad you guys discovered this classic. Up to this point, the martial arts movie industry was dominated by Hong Kong cinema, with people like Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung and Jet Li...
Then, in 2003, came this unknown dude from Thailand who brutally murdered them all in one single movie !
This movie took the entire martial arts movie industry by storm, launching Tony Jaa's career into superstardom. To the point even Jackie Chan came for a short cameo in Tom Yum Goon (named The Protector in the US, Tony's second movie and also a spectacular movie. Hong Kong having taken notice just how insanely powerful this movie was, this movie is the one that instantly transformed the martial arts filmmaking from silly funny aerial choreographies à la Jet Li's Once Upon a Time, to grounded and brutal street level fight, and certainly helped Donnie Yen's career as well with movies like SPL, Flahspoint (2 formidable and brutal movies), and later on Ip Man (already legendary).
Tony Jaa has spearheaded the Thailand fight cinema and thanks to how he trailblazed his way into the world, helped a few of his contemporaries and students to shine bright as well (you can also watch a Thai movie called Chocolate, that came out in 2008, directed by the same director than Ong Bak, and starring for the first time Tony's protege JeeJa Yanin, also a brutally spectacular fighting movie.
You mentioned the Raid in your review, and tell you what : If there was no Ong Back, there wouldn't be The Raid. The Raid came out in 2011 and is definitely a continuation of Ong Bak's brutal and gruesome fighting style.

My oldest brother introduced me to this when it first came out. I haven't seen my brother in years and I'll finally see him this Friday and then I come on here and see this.
Ong-Bak was like a myth in the late 2000's when i saw it for the first time. You would hear stories about this amazing Asian film that features Muay Thai, and crazy fights with parkour! There was one dvd that we spread between like 30 of us lol Needless to say we ended up loving the film and the legendary Tony Jaa
Man the music in this movie was just SOOO GOOD.
Remember this is a very very very early production for movies in Bangkok and especially Tony Jaa the legend himself.

I can only recommend „The protector“ to you guys. It’s 200% more brutal and has such a sad story as well.
One of the things about Tony Jaa, he grew up watching old school kung fu, and didn't know they were special effects sometimes, and just thought, well i have to jump that high to be good.. and he's one of the best in the world now
Muay Thai is the sport version of the martial art, I'm not in any way saying it isn't good because it is, the original martial art is Muay Boran. Muay Boran is or was the fighting style of the warriors and soldiers. I myself, would consider Muay Boran/Thai one of the deadliest martial art styles. But something to always remember is this: it's not the martial art but the martial artist.

Like most martial arts forms that turn into sports, the most deadly parts are taken out to make it less dangers. Muay Thai comes from the original battlefield art of Muay Boran the unarmed fighting style an Krabi Krabong being the Thai weapons style swords etc. Tony is the man. But he’s a Muay Boran fighter not a Muay Thai fighter.🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I'm Thai. Tony Jaa's martial art is called Muay Thai Boran, which is a throw-on, shake-and-break fight. It is more dangerous than Muay Thai nowadays. Muay Thai Boran is used in times of war. Can kill opponents, even fight with bare hands. Ancient Muay Thai has 4 sectors, but each region has Mae Mai Muay Thai. Different styles, while Tony Jaa uses Korat boxing in the Northeast of Thailand. will focus mainly on kicking in the northeastern region of Thailand, most people are very strong The shins and legs are big and powerful when kicking an opponent.
Oh Tony Jaa for sure does his own stunts. You can find live showcases of him doing some really incredible stuntwork in front of an audience, including the bit where he ran on everyone's shoulders. No wires, he just kinda does it.
Also glad to hear yall mention how the fight scenes don't feel overproduced. What I really love about Tony Jaa (and most of my favorite fight scenes) is that there aren't a million cuts. The choreography stands on its own.

First time I watched this movie was in 8th grade,all the way in the back of class,on my homies PSP😅
This movie will always have a special place in my heart, as I was brought to watch it in an art-house theater by a buddy of mine and his wife. I was a huge Hong Kong action movie fan at the time, and I was expecting some artsy-fartsy film going in (I had no idea what the film was about), but within the first five minutes I was incredibly happy.
It's my personal best example of "always check stuff out, even if you think you'd hate it, because you could be wrong and miss something that you'd actually really enjoy."
Muay Thai is a top tier striking art. It's often combined with top tier grappling art Brazilian jiu-jitsu in MMA.
Technically Muay Thai is not the most dangerous/deadly, all arts can be very deadly, but Thai boxing is considered the most dangerous sport due to the high rate of devastating knockouts, fighters dying, and broken bones. We were once stationed in thailand and watched a few matches they are pretty messy and brutal. Gina Carano started in Thailand as a kickboxer.
Watching them in person is intense. I've not seen a lot of other IRL martial arts stuff, but living in Thailand I caught some Muay Thai stuff. There was a ASEAN beach sports tournament that had a few boxing and fighting tournaments that included it and going up and down the beach watching different styles Muay Thai really just hits different, forgive the pun.
thai boxing is muay thai muay boran is the raw style the body position is a lot lower the fighters hand position is different but yeah muay boran had to change a lot of stuff to make it fighter friendly
Bruh You literally train your body to tank hits and to get harder with callusing.. I'd recommend boxing + Muay Thai + Jiu Jitsu to anyone who wants to be unstoppable on the streets... personal experience.. Most martial arts are not as effective as those I just said.
When I had to fight a karate dude in a local tournament, they made me not use my bones and thats pretty much a nerf to Thai fighters but I still won easily.. Seriously.. I tried MANY martial arts.. Muay Thai is still my favorite.

While Muay Thai is a devastating martial art, it's still a traditional form yet heavily competition-based, so not made to be fatal. There are actually lethally and fatally-focused martial arts like Krav Maga. And one very popular martial art that is banned from MMA is Wing Chun, because they are trained to do eye gauges, groin shots, and bone breaking.

The age in the movie is the time when foreigners love to order statue's head to decorate their home through black market, a lot of ancient statues in Thailand were destroyed because of this issue.

2:42 at my elementary school we had very tall playground instruments and me and my friends would definitely play tag on em, it got to a point people were climbing all the way up and one kid did fall and had to be rolled out by wheelchair with the nurse but we all kept playing lmao, we did not gaf as children.

Muay Thai is one of the most dangerous arts, a similar one called Lethwei is even scarier because the fights are bare knuckle and in addition to punches, kicks, knees and elbows, headbutts are also allowed.

I dont practice muay thai so I may be wrong... But from what i know it is a pretty brutal martial art. If im not mistaken its known as the "art of eight limbs" referring to your hands, elbows, knees, and feet. In ancient times the warriors would fight unarmed against armed opposition, focusing on simply injuring them by breaking bones instead of killing. This was to take out the most amount of enemies and refocus on protecting the king.
Again, im only spouting stuff I've heard about the art so im not 100% on all this

Saw this with my best friend when it came out in the states. Never seen REAL hits or this style in general before. Gotta love the old, kick the dude straight in his fucking face technique. Quite effective.

My crew of teenage friends called this 48:45 the Mortal Kombat "FATALITY!" sequence in the theater. I've never seen anyone accelerate THROUGH an opponent.
Before "The Raid" this was THE premier modern Asian action movie/martial arts movie of the 2000s!

All martial arts/armed and unarmed combat can be 'deadly', from the ancient arts to the hand to hand taught to us in the armed forces...it's the person using it, that determines if it's lethal or not, nobody learns an art to walk down a back alley looking for trouble...if they do they are the wrong person to be learning it....
This is a great movie, you guys need to see The Protector next

Tony Jaa does all his own stunts. the guy he kneed in the helmet he almost broke his neck and gave him a concussion. Check out Tom Yung Goong ("The Protector" the english title)
