    What a fantastic match-up between these 2 cars. You have the heavy hitter... a 1969 Camaro SS396 L78, but in the other corner is possibly the sleeper of the century, a 1964 Studebaker Challenger with a R3 engine that is topped with a Paxton supercharger. I can't thank the owners enough for bring these cars out and hitting the drag strip!

    Ted Harbit has been rowing the gears on the 'Plain Brown Wrapper' since 1998. There's a mention of him in this month's Hemming's Muscle Machine's article on the 25th anniversary of the Stanton Pure Stock Drags- and the fact that Ted's 84 years young! And the 'Wrapper is #3 in the list of the 5 fastest small blocks with a 12.714 @111.24mph. Ain't bad for an engine that's been out of production for 55 years!

    My '57 Studebaker Golden Hawk had the supercharged 289 engine and a 3 speed with overdrive. It also came with 4:30 rear gears! Who ever ordered this car wanted the quickest around, that's for sure.

    The Studebaker was a year before the supposed first muscle car. I bet a 389 tri-power goat wouldn't beat that little R3

      The crazy thing is that Studebaker was supercharging quite a few cars even in the 50s but no one really sees them as muscle cars either

      @net-rioter That R3 powered Studebaker sold for about $4,000 in 1964, not $10,000. I’m not aware of any Studebaker that cost anywhere near $10k new.

      @@netrioter I doubt that there was a person on the planet that would shell out 10G for a STUDEBAKER in 1964 not even the Shelby Cobra’s had such a price tag never mind something shaped like a giant brown lunch box.

    As has been mentioned, the Stude Challenger R3 has often been driven by Ted Harbit. With its 304.5 cu in engine, the Brown Paper Wrapper has less torque than big block cars, and struggles to keep up off the line. But I believe Ted has said that, if the race was close in the early going, he knew he would win because, once the supercharger got really kicked in, there were few muscle cars who could keep up with the R3. Also, because the R3 engine is so rare, Ted was under strict instructions from owner George Krem not to exceed 6000 rpm. Andy Granatelli claimed that he shifted at 8000 rpm while racing prototype R3 Avantis, so Brown Paper Wrapper may have untapped potential that will never be seen.

    Love that old studeeeee! Both guys know how to row a JERK YOUR OWN!!! LOL! Amazing how those baby rats wake up with some gearing. Rec port heads are too much for the baby rat. We now use a 781 or 049 big oval port head with the rec port 2.19/1.88 valves and easily get into the low11s on pump gas. A big block chevy under 500 cubes for street/strip= big oval port heads. A big chevy street/ strip over 500 CI. can use the rec port heads. My tractor pulling buddy taught me all this back in the day. Good to check in with you bro. Let me know if you did some research on the. buick stage 3 stuff! By the way that stude 289 is terribly heavy for that size engine, very beefy but too much for an engine under 300 ci. But anyway, studebaker made andy granatelli proud!

      It was best of three. The Studebaker underestimated the 396 with 4.56 gears and got smoked on the tree and flat out ran in round one and and lost by a couple of cars. The second race he slept again and even though he ran quicker and faster this time the Camaro got there before him and got the win light, no need for a third race. This is one of only a very few races that I’ve seen the Studebaker lose, that car is hard to beat in this class.

    What's the Pure Stock class rule for changing pulley ratios on the Superchargers? Or crank pulleys on N/A cars?

    • @michaelseibert634
      @michaelseibert634 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What I have read is that they can use anything in their cars that could have been ordered from the factory. And I believe the R3 had different Supercharger pulleys to boost the pressure a pound or two above the R2.

    R3 made 400hp I believe ?

    • @michaelseibert634
      @michaelseibert634 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      At first, Studebaker didn't publish HP ratings for R-series engines, but the R3 was eventually rated at 335 HP. But they were still playing games . . . Andy Granatelli built the R3 engines and they all were 400 hp or more on the dyno. The Plain Brown Wrapper engine dyno'd at 440 hp. There were only 9 R3 Avantis and 1 R3 Lark built by the factory. The Plain Brown Wrapper didn't come with the R3 engine from the factory. But George Krem bought the R3 engine from the factory and put it in the car shortly after he bought it.

      Sounds to me like you need to pay more attention. What you’re referring to at the end is the closing sequence (stock footage as you call it) used in all videos around that time. If you watch and listen, it’s just a clip from round two. There was no round three filmed that year.
