If this is a "sub-par" performance, you can imagine a good one. This was live and under difficult circumstances. No one falling drunk or stoned on the stage and highly competent and original musicians
Thank you for this. I’ve always wanted to hear Pentangle at the Isle of Wight Festival. It sounds great.... I’ve read some bad things about their set...(check out the Rolling Stone article from September 1970) but I think they did a great job.
it's good to hear this again.I was there and it was a much better location than the dust bowl of 69. I hear they are trying to recreate a 50 th anniversary festival this year.would be nice to see if pentangle play, or more likely Jacqui mcshee 's version owing to the absence of jansch and Renbourn.
They played at the Fillmore with the Dead and learned it from them. While the Lady with a Fan section of terrapin is based off Lady of Carlisle that Pentangle played
Colin thank you so much for uploading all these pentangle shows. I guess you are the same Colin Harper who wrote 'Dazzling Stranger'? If so thank you for writing this too ;)
Been wondering about this for decades Coiln and your text and answers answer all my questions. Once again, we are all in your debt. Just before Hendrix, eh? Wasn't Cohen just after him? Recall that MOJO feature of the festival where Jacki was quoted as feeling "Gobsmacked " at Jimi.
Jimi was certainly very capable and inventive but I expect he was pretty damned impressed by Pentangle including Jacqui's voice in addition to Bert & John's guitar playing (and prob. Danny's bass too)
Will the circle be unbroken? It's a good version of this song. I knew the Joan Baez's version (which is really good too) but not this one. Thanks for the upload.
A great band. Jaqui's voice was [and is] a miracle of beauty, purity and perfect intonation. John was a great player. At what time in the Festival did they go on?
@@colinharper8791 Murray Lerner filmed the WHOLE festival, all artists all sets. I had the pleasure of speaking to Murray a few times before he sadly died and he confirmed this with me. Much of course has not been seen but it is preserved as unedited footage. He had as many as 6 cameramen filming at any one time over the whole 5 days of the festival. All of Pentangle will be there somewhere. Hidden gold.....
@@rogersimmonds2003 I communicated with Murray in the mid 90s. He only had three, possibly four, tracks filmed from Pentangles set. This choice was typical of many of the sets - film was expensive/bulky, and he wanted, I believe, to get a representative chunk of every act plus the majority/all of the headline acts. That's why there are only three tracks by Free filmed (on one of their DVDs). Similarly, the Moody Blues and Jethro Tull DVDs have roughly half their sets, if that. Only the Who and Hendrix and Miles Davis sets - of those released - are complete.
Only song I don't care for here is "Will the Circle be Unbroken." Not Jacqui's best vocally on this one. Also, just something about the arrangement is not the greatest. Otherwise, love all the other songs in their set, and Jacqui's voice on the rest of the songs are very good, other then this one. Prefer Joan Baez's cover of "Will the Circle be Unbroken."
Pentangle. Nothing today is this good !!
Sadly Pentangle were before my time, but I love their music - Top TOP Musicians One and All. I would love to have seen them Live in their prime.

I REALLY need these uploads at the moment...Beyond grateful Colin!!!!

Have Just discovered this. Awesome.

Great job, Colin Harper. Sounds pretty damned good to me.
Wow - house carpenter is absolutely stomping. Shame no footage exists of thid show
Cold Rain and Snow is a song the Grateful Dead played frequently. Pentangle’s version is quite nice!

If only I’d stayed in Europe later than August 10 that summer!
The photo of Pentangle is from the 1969 'Dylan' Isle of Wight Festival.

At what time in the Festival did they go on?
Sunday afternoon - Free, then Donovan, then Pentangle - and Moody Blues as darkness fell.
Was there any video of this?
Murray Lerner filmed three songs from their set. None have yet appeared in any documentary etc.
