    I think the biggest problem with this game is people are calling it a party game. It is not a party game at all. The high player count and the small box makes it feel like it is but that is a lie. It's way too thinky and being cooperative lacks the competition of a good party game. That said I enjoyed it but we ended a game night with it thinking it would be light and that was a bit of a mistake.

    I think I still prefer Decrypto which seems to be left by the wayside compared to Codenames and the like. A really fun take on the team game format.

      Decrypto is the best, for sure. I'm with you on that!

    My daughter won this in a drawing at the most recent con we went to, thus making it her new favorite since it’s “hers”. I enjoyed our first play through, but definitely want to try with another group.

    OK so without wishing to be too much of a smartass...
    ...it should be worth mentioning, unlike almost any other word game, you can use a letter more than once.
    So for the example at 3:00, my suggestion would be MELEE which would mean your furry friends would see "?ELEE" and "ME?EE" - which should leave them able to deduce their letters.
    Actually, now that I've seen those clues written down, on reflection I think your friends would be more likely to go "yer wot?" and throw things at you.

    Efka, you are the single best person I've found at giving clear, concise descriptions of confusing games. I have heard tons of talk and seen videos about Letter Jam, Inis, and Alchemist, and I didn't understand any of them until I watched your videos.

    I've have this and really enjoy it. As you mention, it's not quite a code names type game (sitting, chatting away and working together as a team to figure out clues). Rather, it really is cerebral to sit and think of the best word to give to other players. Individuals will spend a phase together thinking long and hard of the best words they can come up with. And then after it's all spelled out, it's another round of racking your brains out to spell out what was given to you. It's frustrating to play when a word is sitting in front of your face and you can't figure out. But it's also quite rewarding when you figure it out too, hopefully.

    I've heard this game described 3 or 4 different times before and I think this is the first time I think I finally understand how it works! It seems super interesting but also a game it'd be hard to get other people excited about trying.

    Abracada...What? is my favorite Hanabi style game even after playing Letter Jam. To me it helps that it is not competitive so what you can and cannot say/table chatter goes a lot smoother for me.

    Order of the Stick! It's such a great webcomic. Efka, if you haven't read DM of the Rings, you need to. Think Lord of the Rings, but you get to hear the D&D players dialogue as they play.

    If the end of the game is you arranging your cards in the hope that they make a word, what if there's no word that can be made from those letters?

      Because this is a game that forces you to not only consider what you can see, but everyone else's perspective as well.
      Which is a great lesson for life, I think....
      But yeah, this is definitely a game where it's easier to walk through step by step as you play rather than being taught all the rules and then diving in....

    I managed to get in two plays of this at UKGE and it was my game of the Con. Such a satisfying experience, definitely not a party game. More like the Decrypto feel than the Codenames one.
    Love NPI but saddened to hear another reviewer slam Hanabi - at this point it is starting to look as though it IS a poor game based on the industry wide consensus but (as someone who has struggled with alpha gameage) it is still one of my all time favourites.

    What's the difference between Jam and Jelly?
    You can't jelly your REDACTED into your ....... without being demonetized
    Alternate:
    CGE: "Cool game...what's the theme?"
    ONDRA: "Umm, there is no theme. It's a letter game"
    CGE: "Jam in a theme and we'll publish your game"
    ONDRA: "That reminds me of a joke! What's the difference between Jam and Jelly?"
    CGE: "....Get out"

    • @mahna_mahna
      @mahna_mahna 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The graphic designer wanted to go with a different theme but they wouldn't letter.

  • @mahna_mahna
    @mahna_mahna 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Well, "jam" because it's a play on words. Explaining jokes is cool, right? A "letter jam" is a postal thing when the letters jam the machinery. Like a paper jam in a printer.

    • @meeplereport7436
      @meeplereport7436 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was thinking more like Jam as in Jamboree. So Letter Jam, since you are playing (having a jam) with letters.

    • @mahna_mahna
      @mahna_mahna 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I think that's one of the secondary wordplays they were going for, there. But I feel like the origin of it was the real term "letter jam".

    • @ndclub67
      @ndclub67 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      When I played an early prototype of letter jam I thought it had the theme of a printer putting one pixel at a time on the flower card in the middle. I was surprised it was a word game once it was explained to me.

    I do not understand how you cannot know what your letters are with each clue. The numbered poker chips are placed in front of the cards in the order to spell the word. Are you not supposed to see what chips are put in front of your letters? If so, are people supposed to close their eyes?

    • @jeffmcleod3829
      @jeffmcleod3829 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You see which number your letter is but you never, ever see what your actual letter is till the end of the game. It's facing away from you.

    • @XShrike0
      @XShrike0 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jeffmcleod3829 Then I do not see how you would not know what your letter is, if used. The act of putting the numbered chips in the order they are used in the word should tell you exactly what your letter is. The only way I could see not know what your letter is is if your letter is not used.

    • @CapriciousMissK
      @CapriciousMissK 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@XShrike0 You don't tell people what the word is. You just put the chips in the order of the word you thought of and everyone has to try to figure out what words could be spelled and what their letters might be.

    If hanabi eliminate communication, the mind destroy communication. I agree Letter Jam is very good, but it's more a strategic filler than a party game for me, it is better and more strategic.
