Julia Bradbury climbs the Pillar one of the Wainwright Walks

This was part of the first series of walking programmes with Julia produced by Skyworks for BBC4. It was deemed as one of the most successful of its time. Leaving Black Sail Youth Hostel head up the valley to cross the River Liza. The bridge takes you up to Black Sail Pass, at the top of the pass turn northwest and step onto the main ridge that leads you to the summit. At Looking Stead AW says this is the best viewpoint for the whole of Ennerdale. Leave the ridge and head on the High Level Route cutting across Pillar’s north face. You are then face to face will Pillar and a steep scramble on 122 meters will get you to the top and you can then walk around Pillar’s rounded peak.
