Automatic 1995 Mazda Miata Review

  • My thoughts on the 1995 Mazda Mx5 Miata, with the 1.8L inline 4 engine and 4 speed automatic transmission:
The Mazda Miata is a legendady car, a perfect blend of the roadster spirit of the 1950s mixed with the reliability and handling of Japanese cars. With a basic Idea like that, the Miata has become a classic, and gained a cult following. But what happens when you stick an Automatic transmission in one?
The internet throws a tantrum every time a car of high praise and legacy, is automatic. Comments like "Get a real mans car" or "Automatics suck" usually raid the comment boxes faster than gamers flock to gamestops when a new Call of duty comes out. But if you hold off for one second, let me tell you why this Automatic is okay.
No car enthusiast wants an automatic car. Thats just the truth. So when an automatic Miata pops up on a local craigslist search, no one bats an eyelash. And thats a good thing, because that means that Miata gets saved. Miatas have become budget drift cars. Cut springs, unsafe camber, and garden hose exhausts have become the new normal. But this Miata, Josh's 1995 NA, doesn't have any of that. It's completely stock, not a touch different than when it hit the showroom nearly 22 years ago. This Miata has become a time capsule, of a now dying legend. The world is running out of untouched Mx5s, so if It takes an Automatic Miata to preserve the style and idea of the original Miata, I'm okay with that.

I wholeheartedly agree on Automatics being the thing that can help the miata retain it's stock form. Vintage cars are priced on mileage and how original/stock it is. I mean, look at AUTOMATIC Supras and RX7 prices they're getting nearly the same price as the manuals. I think at a certain vintage and collectibility the gearbox doesn't matter anymore. People will just go oooo Supra, wowww RX7 that's rareee. No one has ever said ooo a miata that's rare yet though so I think it will take a generation more or at least until our generation (i'm 28) is dying and we want to relive the glory days of our enthusiast youth when our wives have died and we can finally re-buy the miata (at millenial tax prices) she made you get rid of lol.

I have a ‘94 Miata w/5 spd and my daughter really wanted it. I tried to teach her stick and she would have picked it up with more practice. She decided she wanted her own Miata and got a pristine ‘95 with automatic. It drives good and is probably better for her in the big city traffic of Dallas. I’m still hoping she will learn stick.

I have very few requirements when it comes to my cars.
For a daily driver it would need to be Automatic, Have Cruise, AC and working speakers.
An automatic Miata would be a daily driver for me if I really needed a daily and wanted a Miata at the same time lol!!!
I drive an hour or more each day to and from work and that’s why I have those requirements, if I had to drive 30 mins or less I wouldn’t mind having a manual daily.
Also automatic NA Miata are so cheap!! Great first car for a teen!!

Very well said. I ended up buying a '92 automatic over the weekend, after watching your video, and it is indeed a survivor. 70,089 miles, original owner, garage kept, and I believe him when he said it was mostly only driven to festivals and parades...I don't think I've ever come across another 27 year old car that still has the OEM floor mats in usable condition.
Do I enjoy driving the manual more? Sure, but my wife liked the automatic and tapping the O/D button wakes it up enough for me. It may become a manual if the auto ever dies, but for now I'm happy cruising country roads with the automatic.

    • @ryanservizzi6675
      @ryanservizzi6675 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@TheSe7enFilmsV2 Not really. I did a LOT of research on them and they're fairly reliable. The same transmission was also used in small SUVs and Pickup Trucks, so it's overly robust for a small car, like the Miata.
The auto in the first gen Miata is rather primitive and doesn't have many electronics, so it isn't the smoothest or most consistent shifting transmission. The later generations got more modern technology and are seem to perform better.

At least in north america only the early 1600 automatics (1990-93) were slightly detuned to 105 horse power. From 1994 onwards with the release of the 1800 engine, they were identical to the manual.
I've owned three: '92,' 90 eunos and currently a 2001. They are only 2-3 seconds slower overall. Acceleration is a little softer due to having taller gearing. If you make use of the lockout overdrive/hold switch. They are still fun to drive and toss around corners.
Best thing is try one for yourself and form your own conclusion. They are just as reliable as the manuals.

There's a million unmolested Miatas out there still. At least in the UK there's loads still, and if someone slaps a hot air intake on there and puts different alloys on that it won't "ruin" the car. The mods are rarely irreversible.

Personally because I don't drive stick and the pandemic has made it a nightmare to even learn how to drive stick now, I would buy an automatic 1995 and up NA Miata that's factory stock completely. The only modifications I can see myself making to this car is installing a rollbar for safety, painting it mariner blue if it isn't that color, and installing an OLED port (if even possible) otherwise I wouldn't change a the engine or transmission in any way, it would NOT be a track car either.

Rollbars are great for rollovers and giving you a broken skull when you get rear ended on the street without a helmet on. What’s more likely to happen to you if you are buying it to drive it like a corolla?

For only $3000. Wish me luck boys.

On the plus side, parts for the manual swap are prolific and cheap! Only good thing about it is the body is in good shape and it came with a hardtop for cheap. It’s going under the knife this weekend to get that 5 speed life started and I can’t wait to rescue it from the grip of its slushbox.

Also limited slip differentials only came with the manual transmissions. In order for this one to have a LSD it had to have been swapped.
