    What I find amazing is all the corn that is grown now days. Just about any land that can grow corn and been turned into corn fields...used to be a lot of pasture land around but that all gone now.

    Great video! I think Ag equipment is the most fascinating, clever and challenging designs I have ever seen. Thanks for showing us how yours works and the maintenance - crop yield is done on your farm. Good job!

    Thanks! As a non-farmer (I used to raise oranges, which is a LOT different) I finally understand how a corn head works.

    I never ran a corn stalk thru the stalk rolls. I used a hacksaw blade to set the clearance.

    Pulling off the old, seized on stalk rolls is the most frustrating job on the planet. You gain a new vocabulary doing that job.

    If, ( as i suspect you didn't video ) y'all took the time to examine all of the frames and brackets and for damage while you were down this far ! Probably cleaned a lot of dirt/debris preventing future corrosion and aiding in keeping the bolts tight ! Sure seems like the new parts will reduce head shelling losses and " grain carry over" across the sieves by reducing the trash volume ! A ( relatively ) cheap field test of what y'all will be looking for in the future when you contemplate a newer combine !

    In the 80s IH perfected the cutting of stalks with knife rolls. We've never had issues of "earpicking stalks". Imo John Deere has alot of add on stuff for reasons that they need to improve. Not hating on any of what you're doing because it all needs done for bettering the farm and ways you farm but don't be color blind unless there are not any dealers close 25 miles might be a ways away but for better products I would be willing to travel the distance.

    They make a shreder that will put the corn stocks in a row for you to bale it up or you can chop it to..

      The chain rolls were to improve stalk degradation, which has gotten much better

  • @mitchp350
    @mitchp350 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I am a Lobster fisherman in Nova Scotia, so corn harvesters are pretty new to me. I am still trying to figure out, how the husk(not sure of spelling) comes off, then all kernels come off cobs? I understand now the arms, I guess shear? the cob from the stock? I am guessing.

    • @firstname6208
      @firstname6208 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the snouts guide the stalks up so the gathering chains can grab them and pull the stalks in between the long rollers. the rollers are spinning as the stalk gets pulled up the rollers yank the stalk down against the flat plates. the ear pops off and the chains carry it up to the cross auger. the new rollers they installed were specially replaced to chop the stalks to aid in breaking them down before the next crop season. the kernels are shelled off the ear inside the combine. maybe the boys will get in there with the camera so you can see what's happening there.

    You might have wasted money on the vt after seeing the stock get chopped up

  • @koryleague8833
    @koryleague8833 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm sure this conversion was expensive. How does it stack up cost wise verses running a stock chopper over the field. With the compaction factor aside cost wise how does it compare

    • @sahholsteins1
      @sahholsteins1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      kory league well with knife rollers you shouldn't have run over it with a stalk chopper so you'd save fuel and another trip across the field

    • @koryleague8833
      @koryleague8833 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Scott Hageman I understand that my question was how does the cost of this conversation compair to just chopping stalks taking out the factor of compaction caused by another trip across the field

    • @firstname6208
      @firstname6208 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      the conversion wasn't just about chopping stalks, the brushes and chains will pay for the stalk chopping (hopefully) in corn savings. plus that corn head had lots of miles on it. it was in need of refitting to keep the harvest going too. so some piece of mind also. I would put some lexan panels around the top of the header to catch those ears that pop out saving even more corn.
