It was such an interesting time in history but always overlooked in school curriculums. I remember the tale of Matilda escaping from the besieged Oxford Castle either by descending on white sheets or dressed all in white as it was the depths of winter & everywhere was covered in snow! She escaped across the frozen Thames!
Didn’t look at all busy round the Docks or Cathedral.

      Thank you Diana!
Yes! The wider story of Queen 👑 Matilda is a really fascinating one - obviously I could only give a brief overview in this little video. That's true about Oxford Castle - I remember going there a few years ago. In fact, I have Oxford in my sights to do some videos about later.
I filmed this last Sunday afternoon when it was nice and quiet 😊.
Hope you are having a good weekend.
      Take care,
      Paul

Hello Paul - greetings from Poland.
A lovely sunny spring Sunday afternoon. What a superb story about Matilda. A great history lesson about a period in our past that history seems to have forgotten about. Nice to see Gloucester and its docks were not too busy, giving a lovely setting to your story.
I hope your Dad is getting better.

      Thank you Michael!
Yes, I think this slice of Gloucester's history has been largely forgotten - it is all about Henry III and Edward II and not Matilda and Henry II.
I filmed it on a Sunday so it was all fairly quiet - apart from the Cathedral's bells!!
Yes, my Dad is making good progress - just been to see him again this afternoon in hospital
      Take care,
      Paul

That was really interesting. I had not heard about Matilda. I really liked the music at the beginning and also the cathedral bells sounded so nice!

      Thank you Louise!
Yes, it seems that the cathedral bells ring out for about an hour every Sunday afternoon (I filmed it last Sunday).
Matilda is a largely forgotten slice of English history now, but still important I think.
      Glad you found it interesting.
      Take care,
      Paul

Hello Paul. What wonderful music to open with and the church bells were the icing on the cake. Great story about Matilda. I found it very interesting. Thank you for that and I hope your Father is recovering nicely.👍

Glad you enjoyed the music and the church bells.
Glad you found the story about Matilda interesting too.
Yes, my Dad continues to recover - I may have some more news later today or tomorrow. Thanks for your kind words.
      Take care,
      Paul

Thanks Paul. The cathedral is magnificent! Yesterday I could not concentrate because of the loud pealing bells 🔔🔔......and I abandoned your history lesson. However today I listened to you talking again ...with my eyes shut 😑 😁 and I understood it better. 👑🙂

Yes, it is one of the many hazards of filming in cities, and why I tend to avoid them Cathy, although it is usually traffic and shouting people, and not peeling bells! They ring out for well over an hour (sometimes two or more) every Sunday afternoon, which is when I filmed this, so it was quiet(ish) of people, but not bells!
I did feature Gloucester Cathedral in one of my Severn Way videos last year, but, yes, you are right, it is quite an incredible place.
It is quite a tale, which has now largely (sadly) been forgotten.
      Paul

Thank you Paul, for that history lesson, and tour round Gloucester docks! I see there is a waterways museum there! I'll have to visit some time!

      Thank you Michael!
Yes, I went there many, many years ago when it first opened - it was the National Waterways Museum in those days (it took over from the one at Stoke Bruerne). It is on my list to cover in a future video - hoping to tie it in with one of their boat trips.
      Cheers!

What an interesting slice of history. The Cathedral bells & your choice of music added a lot to the video. I hope your Dad is improving.

You are the first to know that I am replying to this right now at the hospital - my Dad is being discharged this afternoon, and he will be on his way home shortly!
