  • Gloucester Cathedral, formally the Cathedral Church of St Peter and the Holy and Indivisible Trinity, in Gloucester, England, stands in the north of the city near the River Severn. It originated in 678 or 679 with the foundation of an abbey dedicated to Saint Peter (dissolved by Henry VIII).
Today I am exploring the abbey with the help of Mark Garner, volunteer at the abbey.
A Christian place of worship had stood on the abbey site since Anglo-Saxon times. Benedictine rule was introduced about 1022 and the abbey dedicated to St Peter. [1] The fraternity was invigorated when King William I appointed the energetic Norman monk Serlo to be the abbot. Serlo built the impressive abbey Church of St Peter.

Stunning! Incredibly Amazing! Again, love all the layers of history behind the build - but the architecture itself is just astounding!

Absolutely stunning place! I just recently discovered that my 28th great-grandfather, Roger de Pitres, is buried there. He was the Sheriff of Gloucester under William the Conqueror and constable of Gloucester Castle. The workmanship in cathedral architecture is so beautiful it takes my breath away.

That natural sunlight showed it off incredibly well. And as you say it looks better in real life. Great scenes on the camera Richard. Thank you. And thanks to Mark.

What a triumph of sound, light, texture and architecture. Although the organ must of made your edit a nightmare, it really added to the ambience.

Superb filming Richard, you really captured how beautiful the cathedral is and a really interesting talk with your guide Mark. Never knew about the composer John Stafford Smith of the music to the Star Spangled Banner. Also the lady chapel looked enchanting. A lovely and beautiful cathedtal.

How on earth did the stonemasons of the time
    build this ??
Absolutely beautiful ! What craftsmanship !!
As you both commented , we would be hard pressed to build
    it today !!
This video will surely inspire others to visit Gloucester Cathedral !
    Thank you both 👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧

What a fabulous, incredible building. The windows, the roof, the monuments - wow! Mark is a very knowledgeable guide. The organ sounds like a mighty beast!
Good also to see the Hogwarts cloisters!
Interesting factoid (myth) about Edward II - a lie was started in the 1330s/1340s that he was killed by a red hot poker in a place where no one should have a red hot poker!
