Dude I wanted to thank you for posting this video, last weekend my husband (he’s 60) replaced my 1998 Jeep TJ alternator. we currently live in Germany but managed to find the new part in country just had no mechanic available to do the work, looked up TH-cam and low and behold, there you are changing out the part... BTW we have the exact same Jeep, same colour and all and it’s not very often I find that. So Thanks man, my Jeep is top notch again.

hope you can help.... I have what I think is a Jeep TJ alternator on an MB engine. the bolt alt pivots on has a long nut on one end with a big collar? that slips/recesses into the alternator's ear as you tighten it. Does this sound familiar? the bolt head broke on other end and is frozen in place. ..... I need the alternator off to swap to another engine.

So you have a couple options one is drill out the nuts side, so for example, put on a really strong drillbit and drill out the threads of the nut, which intern, mulches the bolt to nothing after you get through the knot you should be able to pull the bolt out. The other way Is to cut the ear with a grinder for the nut then use the grinder to gain access to sharing the bolt off and sliding it out

@@ghostlyrich further research and have discovered I have an alternator like in below vid. The nut w/sleeve he pounds back for space is what I was able to remove off the frozen bolt. Does this change anything in your above statement?

@coachgeo if I were you, I would drill out the threads on the bolt and after you’ve drilled completely through the nut, try bashing out the bolt from the nut side once you’re through then if the sleeve is in the way, you can attack that after you remove the nut the biggest thing is getting the bolt out first

You can even start off with a small drillbit, and then gauge it to bigger and bigger drillbits

Ok so my situation is..my jeep was dead, i put in a new battery and terminals..drove for a week, today it was dead …i use a booster and it starts…i remove booster and it keeps running fine and i can drive it and stuff..if i shut it off its instantly completely dead again. Someone said alternator because its not re charging the battery BUT, wouldn’t the Jeep die once i disconnect the booster, So someone else said starter. ..guess I’ll have to replace both damnit

Easy way to see if it's your alternator and you have a volt meter put the volt meter on it and jump it like you've been doing you should see the voltage when you disconnect those clamps stay up there at around 13.8 to 14 volts if you disconnect those and that alternator drops down to let's say under 13. That's a good indicator that your battery is on its way out. If it's your starter it could be drawing way too much. The other thing is is if you got a new battery depending on how long it was sitting on the shelf it could be quite low itself too. Another thing I can't remember if that alternator has an alternator fuse but double check and make sure the fuse isn't half blown for some reason, I would personally start with putting a volt meter on the vehicle and seeing how much voltage and how quickly it drops as the car is idling trying to charge itself. Put it under load by turning the headlights on as well as AC if it has it and even if not the climate controls on full and see how far your system drains down to. Another thing to do after that is turn off your motor leave the volt meter attached and watch how quickly the battery drops voltage and see if it drops under 12. Just to make sure you don't have something drawing power or shorting when the vehicle is turned off

Dude just unplug the battery instead of taking off your sock or using tape and a balloon...seriously who has a spare baloon in their jeep besids a clown.

You should show how to get it past the ac instead of the throw off comment. Hardest part of the job.

Uhhh there’s easier ways of just removing the pulley bud lol. I don’t think you really know what you’re talking about tbh but ok
