I was weeping when he kept missing the save point and falling into the room of minotaurs during the inverted coliseum. But it was all worth it to see him fight Galamoth after seeing him scoff at the inverted castle bosses. Can't just spam Chakrams and Heavensword through that fight.
Max's luck for rare drops is insane. Also he is really good at going everywhere BUT the right way to go, many times he avoided the boss rooms, explored the whole area minus the boss room and leave the area. He's also really bad at reading the map lol. Good playthrough Max, really entertaining.
My favorite part about the "Alucart" gear, is that at first you'd think it was a mistranslation, but the moment you find a piece of the "Alucard" gear it turns out they knew what they were doing with the name of those items

I actually think the voice acting for both Dracula and Death are actually quite decent especially for the time. It was everyone else that has that awkward ps1 bad voice delivery. I do miss the comedic tone of it though, it's an era that'll never be relived again.

It's basically like if they redubbed the original silent hill or resident evil, the chances outright replacing the comical nostalgia pisses people off. It's the same with the silent hill hd collection, I prefer the newer voice acting as I think the whole theory before of the acting being deliberately bad or awkward is genuinely some form of coping mechanism.
This dude really beat Galamoth without the Crissaegrim, Beryl Circlet, Shield Rod + Alucard Shield, OR even Soul Steal. That's harsh for a first play through!

It's almost like this was a blind playthrough, even though his fukken chat tried their hardest to make sure he was going through the most optimal route instead of a natural progression. Much shock. There's also the fact Max is notoriously bad at puzzles. XD But yeah, considering how the wording on the Gold and Silver Rings are and they weirdly have "..." twice in their description along with them being the only ones to point out the "inscription" part, the only way I feel like anyone comes to the conclusion of not figuring the puzzle out is assuming that there are other rings in the game that also are like "Inscription: (insert words here)". I feel like the only way to make it even more clear for people is by having the two rings have a clock and goat head design to better point to the big clock face, where the goat ring has the "clock" description, and the clock ring has the "tower" description.

Yeah, I assumed the clock tower was the one with the clockwork gears. The best part of the whole gold/silver ring sidequest is that Maria could have just decided to wait around for you right in front of the room with Richter. Instead she chose to hide in the most difficult to reach part of the castle. It's like she wanted you to kill him.

You had some really cool weapons, I don't think I've ever come across the Chakram in like 15 playthroughs, or I didn't even notice it was not a 1 time use. You missed three of the coolest though. Obviously Crissaegrim, but that's more gamebreaking and less awesome. Sword of Dawn can be found in a wall in reverse castle near where the double jump was originally, it lets you summon all kinds of skeletons which is useless but cool. And then there's the Rune Sword which drops off the Dodo Bird in the reverse castle entrance, which just throws a huge sword in front of you. Also you missed the Sword Familiar which levels up and becomes a sentient death machine. It's hidden in a ceiling in one of the passages to the left of Olrox's Quarters. And obviously the entire Richter mode which becomes available after first clearing it. So if you'd want to go back, there's even more content to find.
Its great to watch you playing these classics and seeing your reactions. So much nostalgia and good memories here! Everything about this game is so refined from the music to the map layout and eventual upside down map. Makes u wonder how much planning and thought they had to put into the design
I mean hey. At least he got use out of all the numerous food items in the game thanks to not knowing. Nah, I didn't mind him not learning Soul Steal. The thing that was unfortunate was that he never learned about Wing Smash. Soul Steal is good to have in your arsenal, but it is also excessively overpowered. Wing Smash is downright imperative as far as quality of life improvements go in this game.
Right? It sucks that he actually had to engage with enemies and navigate both castles without a move that bypasses ALL OF THAT in favor for a more streamlined viewing experience that we could have gotten from a hundred other channels.
As a person who has beat this game at least 20 times this was both frustrating (just bc I know all the secrets and paths you SHOULD HAVE taken) and entertaining as hell seeing you figure everything out. Hope you enjoyed

The soundtrack for this game is so good. I can always come back to it and listen. Also I think if Maria saves Richter in the beginning you get this ending. But if you don't have Maria in the beginning at the end Maria chases Alucard at the end.
No, it's caused by the percentage of the map you have explored. For Maria to chase Alucard, he needs to have explored both castles in almost all their entirety
I don't actually come back to listen to SOTN's soundtrack all that much.......but that's because I'm replaying this game so often that I just listen to the soundtrack in the game itself, lol. Just finished another playthrough right now, in fact, 200.6% map completion, killed Drac with a Thunderbrand and a Holbein Dagger.
Made the same mistake regarding the "clock tower" years ago when I played it (back in '97). I kept running around the true "clock tower" area with all the gears and the Harpies and the Medusa Heads with the rings and was flummoxed why nothing was happening.
One thing that's always baffled me is how in the hell did Maria manage to get past the grated wall and all of those spikes? I mean, Alucard had to go around the entire castle just to get there and Maria's just chilling there, LOL.
Probably magic of some sort. Maria, canonically, is an extremely powerful magic user. She's like way OP compared to Richter in Rondo, at least gameplay wise. And she was like 12 then, so she prolly has all kinds of crazy stuff going on by the time she's an adult. I wish we did get more games about her, tho. And Sonia.
I love that with the fleeing skeleton at 2:50, Max seems surprised and says, _"Dude, this skeleton guy's got some life on 'em."_ - but especially because he said almost the *exact* same thing the first time he encountered it. (It felt like deja vu so I went to check and you can see the other moment at 3:17:00 in his previous Castlevania video).

THE ANSWER is YES 53:43 Technically yes, there are 3 places left to explore on that map, but they are not visible with the eye. 1º In the coliseum there is a roof missing to break that gives you the holy sword 2º Just above the map is the hallway that connects the Olrox area with the Chapel, in the hallway that looks like a marble bridge the ceiling breaks and the invocation "Sword familiar" is found. 3º In the Underground Caverns area on the way to kill the Scylla you will see an ice floor, it is breakable, it gives you access to another session with the boatman to get the "Holy Symbol" relic. The water does not hurt you. 4º the secret stairs on the top of the castle, at the entrance before Fight Richter, the secret switch on the stone 1:01:41 -> check the switch on the stone and as an Extra, I add a 5th place that is not accessible unless you use a glicht, that is, at the entrance of the castle under the clearly visible slab, you can access the entrance to an area that was never added for the Psx version, only for sega saturn (Underground Garden), after using that glitch you will enter 2 small rooms, one that descends and gives access to a save point, there is nothing else, after doing this, the slab at the entrance will be uncovered forever, leaving you freely access that blocked area in Psx that leads nowhere since the "Underground Garden" area does not exist in PSX.
There are so many delightful little touches in this game that I couldn't help but stop and take in music or some artistic thing they did. After all the years since this game came out the only real flaw IMO is that the invert castle needs more bgm tracks.
This is one of my all time favorite games. I enjoyed watching you run through it, and screaming at my monitor the whole time with the things you missed. xD

AWW i'm so sad he went RIGHT PAST Dawnbreaker Sword as he was exploring the first area of the upside down castle! It's so useful and fun! Literally flew past it in the bat! I'm also glad no one in chat told him that Schmoo drops the best weapon in the entire game, so he could keep the experience pure. The sword Schmoo drops trivializes the entire game if used, bosses dying in mere seconds.
For such an old game this does look pretty good. Music and gameplay wise it looks great. Insane how actual Quality and love in game development can create such timeless Gems

If you or anyone here has a chance the YT channel for Double Fine (Psychonauts/Brutal Legend) has a series where they play games with the people who worked on them and there is a 2+ hr video of them playing this with IGA and he tells cool stories about the game how at one point 6 people worked on the game and there was at one point a customizable bedroom for Alucard.
the strongest weapon is the Alucard Shield hands down the second and favored best weapon of all is Crissaegrim (or Valmanway) a drop item Alucard Sword is holy elemental as I remember, hence it has more consistent better match ups than Osafune, while the Masamune and Yasutsuna, 2 drop items are better than Osafune but technically speaking Muramasa dunks on them all since you can increase its attack to the max, just that it is slow
Every single moment of Max in the Clock Towers is pure gold. Cackling like a demon over here. Also, I knew the chat would try to spoil Max on the Crissaegrim as soon as the Schmoo showed up. We all know about it, but imo, it shouldn't be known about till a second playthrough. It's handy if you genuinely need it, but it trivializes any challenge the game could have once you get it, I think.
33:30 The livestream was really funny when he got the bad ending ,specially because he didn't have any idea where he had to go and for some reason the chat was only allowed to send emotes for certain moments, confusing him more. Here 45:40, here 49:15 and here 53:45, for example, the people at the chat could only send him symbols like "Yea" , "Nay" or "one More" emotes to guide him. without able to write anything.
ok, I didn't know that he stated this at the beginning. I though it was only a decision of the moderators without telling him, because you can see that he sometimes he asked to the chat to use their words and stop with the yea/nay emotes.

When fighting Galamoth, If your using "Beril Circlet" you'll heal up each time when he attacks with electricity after that it's a easy fight.
I kinda amazed how Max missed Save points just right around the corner every time. XD

You had some really cool weapons, I don't think I've ever come across the Chakram in like 15 playthroughs, or I didn't even notice it was not a 1 time use. You missed three of the coolest though. Obviously Crissaegrim, but that's more gamebreaking and less awesome. Sword of Dawn can be found in a wall in reverse castle near where the double jump was originally, it lets you summon all kinds of skeletons which is useless but cool. And then there's the Rune Sword which drops off the Dodo Bird in the reverse castle entrance, which just throws a huge sword in front of you.
Also you missed the Sword Familiar which levels up and becomes a sentient death machine. It's hidden in a ceiling in one of the passages to the left of Olrox's Quarters. And obviously the entire Richter mode which becomes available after first clearing it. So if you'd want to go back, there's even more content to find.

Shield rod + all the Crazy combos with all the diffrent shields are pretty dope also, Iron Shield Sword spell wrecked so many bosses.

I mean hey. At least he got use out of all the numerous food items in the game thanks to not knowing. Nah, I didn't mind him not learning Soul Steal. The thing that was unfortunate was that he never learned about Wing Smash. Soul Steal is good to have in your arsenal, but it is also excessively overpowered. Wing Smash is downright imperative as far as quality of life improvements go in this game.
Right? It sucks that he actually had to engage with enemies and navigate both castles without a move that bypasses ALL OF THAT in favor for a more streamlined viewing experience that we could have gotten from a hundred other channels.

The soundtrack for this game is so good. I can always come back to it and listen. Also I think if Maria saves Richter in the beginning you get this ending. But if you don't have Maria in the beginning at the end Maria chases Alucard at the end.
No, it's caused by the percentage of the map you have explored. For Maria to chase Alucard, he needs to have explored both castles in almost all their entirety

I don't actually come back to listen to SOTN's soundtrack all that much.......but that's because I'm replaying this game so often that I just listen to the soundtrack in the game itself, lol. Just finished another playthrough right now, in fact, 200.6% map completion, killed Drac with a Thunderbrand and a Holbein Dagger.
As fun as Simon and Richter are, Alucard should have been in Smash. He has so much he could do for his moveset.
Made the same mistake regarding the "clock tower" years ago when I played it (back in '97). I kept running around the true "clock tower" area with all the gears and the Harpies and the Medusa Heads with the rings and was flummoxed why nothing was happening.
One thing that's always baffled me is how in the hell did Maria manage to get past the grated wall and all of those spikes? I mean, Alucard had to go around the entire castle just to get there and Maria's just chilling there, LOL.
Probably magic of some sort. Maria, canonically, is an extremely powerful magic user. She's like way OP compared to Richter in Rondo, at least gameplay wise. And she was like 12 then, so she prolly has all kinds of crazy stuff going on by the time she's an adult. I wish we did get more games about her, tho. And Sonia.

I love that with the fleeing skeleton at 2:50, Max seems surprised and says, _"Dude, this skeleton guy's got some life on 'em."_ - but especially because he said almost the *exact* same thing the first time he encountered it.

53:43 Technically yes, there are 3 places left to explore on that map, but they are not visible with the eye.
1º In the coliseum there is a roof missing to break that gives you the holy sword
2º Just above the map is the hallway that connects the Olrox area with the Chapel, in the hallway that looks like a marble bridge the ceiling breaks and the invocation "Sword familiar" is found.
3º In the Underground Caverns area on the way to kill the Scylla you will see an ice floor, it is breakable, it gives you access to another session with the boatman to get the "Holy Symbol" relic. The water does not hurt you.
4º the secret stairs on the top of the castle, at the entrance before Fight Richter, the secret switch on the stone

and as an Extra, I add a 5th place that is not accessible unless you use a glicht, that is, at the entrance of the castle under the clearly visible slab, you can access the entrance to an area that was never added for the Psx version, only for sega saturn (Underground Garden), after using that glitch you will enter 2 small rooms, one that descends and gives access to a save point, there is nothing else, after doing this, the slab at the entrance will be uncovered forever, leaving you freely access that blocked area in Psx that leads nowhere since the "Underground Garden" area does not exist in PSX.
There are so many delightful little touches in this game that I couldn't help but stop and take in music or some artistic thing they did. After all the years since this game came out the only real flaw IMO is that the invert castle needs more bgm tracks.
There are way many more flaws, the biggest one being that the game is brainless-ly easy and a snorefest

AWW i'm so sad he went RIGHT PAST Dawnbreaker Sword as he was exploring the first area of the upside down castle! It's so useful and fun! Literally flew past it in the bat! I'm also glad no one in chat told him that Schmoo drops the best weapon in the entire game, so he could keep the experience pure. The sword Schmoo drops trivializes the entire game if used, bosses dying in mere seconds.

I was watching some of this live, and I was astonished when I tried to give max the input for the flying bat and a mod deleted my message when I remember he pretty much said to tell him the spells inputs and shit like that... what can I say? Specially when he was talking about slow travel on the map
If you or anyone here has a chance the YT channel for Double Fine (Psychonauts/Brutal Legend) has a series where they play games with the people who worked on them and there is a 2+ hr video of them playing this with IGA and he tells cool stories about the game how at one point 6 people worked on the game and there was at one point a customizable bedroom for Alucard.

There's a neat trick by equipping two Heaven Swords and press the attack buttons simultaneously.
the strongest weapon is the Alucard Shield hands down
the second and favored best weapon of all is Crissaegrim (or Valmanway) a drop item
Alucard Sword is holy elemental as I remember, hence it has more consistent better match ups than Osafune, while the Masamune and Yasutsuna, 2 drop items are better than Osafune
but technically speaking Muramasa dunks on them all since you can increase its attack to the max, just that it is slow

You can play as richter if name the save file richter, hes has a lot more mobility but he has more of a classic vania type gameplay
