  • A year later and as promised, my annual state of the collection (SOTC) series returns! This time I’ve divided it into a 4-part series with the goal of focusing on the 4 key areas of my watch collection.
In this episode I look at my dive watches, why I love them, what I dislike about them, share which is my favourite, which I plan to sell or trade in, and discuss my changing tastes.
Featured in this video are my Squale 1521 50 ATMOS Blue, 1521 "Lion-Shark" Limited Edition, NTH Nacken Modern Blue, Seiko SKX013 "Baby Black Panther", Lorier Neptune Classic, Tudor Submariner 75090, and finally, the Rolex Submariner 116610LN.

Hello sir what do you think is the best tudor pelagos or an omega seamaster 300m thanks tgv and thanks for the channel

    • @theurbangentry
      @theurbangentry  6 ปีที่แล้ว

Hmmm that is a tough one. The Pelagos is the better watch (on paper) but I prefer the Omega.
I advise going into an AD, try them on, your heart will do the rest ;-)
Either way, it's a win win, both classics.
      Thank you Keith,
      Best regards,

At 3:34 when you show the picture of your seiko fifty five mod, what is the book in the background with the battleship illustration? I’ve recently become abit obsessed with ww2 war ships and would look to check it out! Thanks!

I am totally obsessed too! :D
Sorry to say, I am not sure what ship that was, but it is from a fantastic book on battleships, I will add it to my amazon store shortly ;-)

I believe it's a profile drawing of the IJN Fuso following her 1933 modernisation (significant changes to her superstructure, armour and propulsion) from 'The World's Most Powerful Battleships' by David Ross.

I would recommend checking out www.casematepublishers.com/ for military history books. Many of them are available from other vendors.
Recommending a good book is very subjective.

I made some great memories with the submariner this summer,, definitely is a tank,,,I have the royal oak 15400 and I think if you sell the sub to add the AP you will regret it,,,not because the AP is less of a watch but because of the sentiment the submariner holds ,it's your 30th birthday gift to yourself, stop putting it on the bargaining table ,,it's not for sale not for trade ,and that's final,,,I thought we were over this bud

The rolex is far nicer to look at than the AP, to be honest and I hope you don't mind me saying this the AP looks a bit like track suite and trainers..

The problem with Rolex and AP is that it are simply the coolest watches ever but mostly weared by the wrong people with the wrong intentions…………… Exception for the Rolex explorer 1 and 2

How could you possibly even dream of selling a Rolex Submariner, especially when it is the only one in your entire watch collection.
As a serious watch collector you should hold onto the Submariner for life.... after all... we only reach 30yrs once in our life, and as you are a man who cherishes memorable times........... Don't sell it..... You will regret it later and will suffer with extreme depression when thinking about the day you sold it.
If by influence of the devil you decide to sell..... you deserve to be arrested and locked up in a padded cell wearing a straight jacket and an inwardly spiked dog collar ... All in the company of an angry boxing kangaroo who is wearing a JC Deep Sea blue... Stapped to its knuckles.
And the Angels..... .they did sing..

I love the submariner but I love it with the no-date or a sea-dweller without the cyclops. I think the cyclops just breaks the balance of that watch and it looks really good

    • @jdupuis4829
      @jdupuis4829 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I agree. If you want to bleach the bezel, do it on a cheap watch like I did with my Skx, not a truly vintage watch like the Tudor.

Nice collection...but...honestly I don't know if I would put my money into those minor- or micro-brand watches ...or rather put them in the piggy bank in view of buying something more "prestigious" that you could pass on to the next gen...you know what I mean...BTW Squale...900 bucks for 50 atm... c'mon....

Glad to see you didn't retire the SOTC videos for good, TGV. I like the idea of splitting it into categories, makes a lot of sense. The Sub has to be my favorite of your divers. Just pure class. That Lorier is very nice as well, considering the price. And the Tudor, of course. These are shooting up in price as well, so good job on getting one ;)

The first question is what price are you lollipop for? The second is what price is possible but not ideal. For example I might say, I’m looking around $500 but then come across one for $700 that I absolutely love and while it’s more than I wanted to spend it’s still within reason

I did see a Glycine Combat Sub 42 GL0092 for about $375 on Massdrop. But I am still searching for that perfect design that aligns with my aesthetic; I haven't found it yet. If I do and it is under $2000.00 I would make the investment.

Helped me understand the compulsion/passion of collecting. I never relinquish a SKX, in part due the low price going in and I found wearing my SKX007 rather refreshing just yesterday as I was hunting a pre-owned Explorer in the Jewelry District. Current dilemma, trading my R 16013 in for Explorer 214270. Best, JP

The Submariner is a beauty of a watch but sweet Lord, i do not like the bezel edge.

That was a fantastic introduction! The watches are pretty cool too. I just got my first diver a few weeks ago, can’t seem to take it off my wrist, and my other watches are languishing in my watch box. It’s a Seiko SNE435 solar, and I love the look as well as the ruggedness and the idea it could sit for 10 months and still be running. I’ve also found to be very useful as I swim three mornings a week and I can set the bezel to time my swim. I’ve also used a bezel to time other things, and it comes in handy almost every day. I don’t know now whether I’ll ever buy another driver, but if I do it’ll almost assuredly be the Squale 1521 in blue.

nice video! To own half of what you just presented would be a dream come true for me. I bought the Citizen Promaster NY0040-09E last month because of your video about it vs the SKX009. I agree with you. The Citizen Promaster is the better watch. Where I come from, people adore the Seiko SKX divers so I bought the Promaster and I just love it.

  • @TriforceRich
    @TriforceRich 5 ปีที่แล้ว

I own the Sub and it is the greatest watch I've ever owned. Mine is a "No-Date" which might be worth switching up for and pocketing the extra $1k. As you said, people can hate on the watch but I wouldn't knock it until you've tried one. I actually really like the size of the modern Sub. It's a 40mm that wears more like a 41mm. All the modern presence, without being gaudy at all with regards to size, great balance of classic and new.
You'll end up regretting selling it and worse yet you'll probably crave the one you sold because of all the memories.

Hello from Melbourne Australia, I only have one diver and that's the Squale 50 Atmos Onda Azzurro. The Double anti reflective coating showcases the vintage applied hour markers and dial beautifully. My only gripe with it is the Lume could be better. It's also one of the only watches I haven't had to get regulated. I'm either lucky or maybe square regulate all their pieces from factory.

How many divers do I own? Gosh..heaps! A LE Orange Turtle, Straton Syncro 200m Divers Chrono (44mm Auto), and it's source of inspiration - a 1971 Bulova 666 "Surfboard" Diver's Chrono, San Martin Vintage Diver GMT Master, NTH Devilray 500m, Magrette Moana Pacific 500m Chrono, Fortis Black Mars Chrono 200m, a Zeno orange 300m (Poor Man's Doxa) and an exceedingly archaic Seiko Diver from the sixties. All of them are mechanical...Got the bug off my Dad when he got his Citizen diver in the seventies. Do I dive? Sort of...I do lots of snorkeling. And a good heavy watch saves the need for a weight belt!!! (I go down left hand first!) Love the TGV videos and pretty much hooked.

Hi All, I have been there and done that, that being I Purchased two Rolex watches, I also started collecting Invictas twelve years ago, My Rolex GMT is sold and my wife is just selling her 18k solid Gold Oyster , box, papers and all as like me now prefers jokeing with High End watch owners about how much she loves her Invictas I love my Invicta Speedway's and Pro-Divers. I will NEVER EVER AGAIN purchase a HIGH END market WATCHES! Service on Rolex watches cost more than my two Invicta Speedways!

    Dear Friend,
I am, unable to choose, incertitude to buy between following watches: "Longines - Hydroconquest - L3.742.4.96.6" and "Frederique Constant - Classics - FC-270M4P6". May I request you to suggest and help me to purchase one.

I am a fan of military diver watches. If I have all the money in the world, I would probably buy:
    1. Citizen NY0040
    2. CWC Diver
    3. Seiko 2nd Generation Black Monster
    4. Casio Frogman
    5. Omega Seamaster
    6. Marathon diver
If I can have only one diver it is either Citizen NY0040 or Seiko Monster.

TGV, the next time you do your aircraft opening video, do a CF 105 Avro Arrow.... That airplane has a serious cult following... The results will be positive...

I was shopping for and purchased my first diver this year. I was between the 1521 or the Aquis. Although you have two Squales, they way you yearned for the Aquis in other videos sealed my choice. I went Oris and thank you for the recommendation.

I am a sucker for divers...I have two large boxes… 24 slots and usually 4 or 5 that just won’t fit...One box is all dive style watches...And there still a bunch out there but I can’t wait to own...Maybe I have a problem?! If it is a problem it’s a good one to have!
I’m very envious of your collection as it stands now by the way...(JBG) has influenced several of my recent purchases… You and your channel have never let me Astray! Great channel! And another stupendous video! Thanks!

I have 3 true divers. An SKX007, an SRPA83K1 Prospex PADI Baby Tuna and a Steinhart Ocean Titanium 500 GMT. Not sure which I like the most. They all have their good and bad points.

Hey man! Another top video! Keep up the good work!
I have a question or two. How reliable is the Chrono24 app for buying and selling watches? Have you or anyone else here had any experience on this app? Is there a way to refund if the goods don't match what was advertised?
Also I want to sell my watch I bought in July which was at AUD$3200. It was on sale and the RRP was $5500. I had the watch valued on Chrono24 and it was at $4500. How do I sell this watch at that price without showing the potential buyer my documents with the actual price I paid for? Do I pretend that I lost the documents? It isn't wrong to seek a profit right?
    Cheers.

How do you feel with your collection?
I now came up 15 watches - 5 belong to my Bifora collection which I never could sell - but I feel nearly every day guilty/sad that most of them get so less wrist time...
Not because I don’t like them, just because they don’t fit the purpose of the day...
I switch between my only Diver the Phoibos Wavemaster 300 no Date blue - my Casio Edifice EQB and my vintage Orient - all the rest even the so called beaters (Swatch Chrono and Casio Royale Worldtimer) sits there and wait for their time to come...

I have a Seiko SKX007. I bought that one in Bangkok back in 2009 and it’s been my trusted companion ever since. I recently ordered a blue sunburst dial and a clean Murphy style bezel for it. I will also order a flat sapphire crystal and a mixed hands set. I’m also planning on getting the movement upgraded to a Seiko 6r15. This will then feature as my dress watch in the future.
Since I love the look of the 007 I’ve ordered a modded one from Dragonshrouds which has the original black dial, but a yellow chapter ring and yellow bayonet hands with a red box style seconds sweep. This one will get a fully liked bezel insert, a flat sapphire crystal and the 6r15 movement.

I’m the same with my submariner, keep toying with selling but just can’t do it, problem is all of my divers are keepers. My omega seamaster I’ve owned for 20 years, too much sentimental value, my Panerai 164 was a 30th birthday Gift, apart from my 1521 and turtle only the subby could release some serious new watch money.... but it’s just too good!

Apparently, Leonard Bernstein was buried with his beloved score of Mahler's 5th Symphony. If it's not too macabre, which watch will you literally take to the grave with you when you die? I'll probably wear my 'Made in Scotland in '73 just like me-Timex'.

I can remember a upload(YEARS back), where tgv hints the watch limit should/could be around the 10 mark. How much have we ALL went over that mark! The min where we start finding our grails, and classics, that's the limit gone! Great upload, can't wait to see the follow ups.

I’m very pleased to see you do another state of the collection video TGV. I’m a fan of them. Even better that you started with divers and will follow it with aviation watches. My two favourites and in that order too👌🏻. I have four divers in my humble collection. I love tool watches. My next purchase may well be an aviation piece such as a Sinn 103 chrono or a 104. What potentially stands in their way though is a Fortis B-42 Cosmonaut chrono. The size of it will be ok on my 7 inch wrist, but i may go smaller with the Sinns. What do you think? Any suggestions?

TGV, will you be classifying the Catalina as a diver or an aviation watch? Maybe it will be the first member of "The TGV, Hybrid Collection?" . That opens up a whole new justification to convince your wife that you need to get another watch . . "But honey, I'm making history here" ; )

    Hello
I just wanted to say I love your channel & the content you produce. You present a very balanced opinion and view of horology making it accessible to a wide audience. Keep up this great work. However the same isn’t true for your Facebook page, I joined due to my love of watches but am dismayed by the toxicity of the group. Also what is their obsession with guns all about? Truly over compensating imho. It’s sad because I have had to leave your Facebook page as there are so many aggressive opinionated people on it. Anyway I just didn’t know how or where to make this comment, but please understand I love watching your TH-cam content. All the best.

That Tudor prince is just so damn cool. It demands respect because it's 36mm but not a toy. Like a powerful man who never needs to shout. I'm just not a fan of cyclops dates, though I bet it'll supplant your Rolex Sub before long.
Do you have book recommendations on the fundamentals on design theory? Design gets talked about a lot with watches but it doesn't seem like people talk about design from an educated perspective.

What you have done to your Seiko SKX013 is fantastic, especially swapping out the movement. I would love to own that watch. I don’t know why Seiko don’t sell that range with a upgraded movement. The public would pay the higher price to own one.

Tgv, how much watches would make your ideal collection? To be honest i like myself the idea very much of a small compact collection that you can bring everywhere, if something happens you can easily take with you in 1 etui and is perfect enough to cover all your needs. Now this as you know is a question where every watch fanatic deals with on a daily basis and it is still brain-cracking lol rrrrrrr rrrrrrrrrrr
However i only own a few Rolexes and no other brands which makes my collection rather boring to most of the gentry i guess….. Best watch ever for me is a 216570 in white, but i simply can't have only 1 single watch. Very nice collection you have there sir..

This prompted me to look at my collection and i realised it consists of mainly divers watches. I have an Omega Seamaster, a Christopher Ward Trident 600, a seiko quartz diver and a Citizen diver along with a bunch of G-Shocks that can be divers.

I see I have too many diverse… And although I consider a couple cross over/hybrid tyres… I guess I’m at 8. I really don’t like to part with watches that I like, As they remind me of Specific events/periods/memories in general. So I recant...I don’t have too many diapers! By the end of the year I hope to have added 2 to 3 more to the collection!

I've got myself an SKX which I've changed its glass for blue coated double dommed Sapphire, the bezel is now black and coin edged, insert is aftermarket as well and I've actuality put some blue lume in there on the batons. Couldn't be more happy with this time piece as it has been surviving so far through my swimming sessions.

Another great video. Watched your review of the Lorier and bought one that night. Been loving it. Started collecting about 18 months ago. Collection stands at 22 watches. I've cooled off because I can't wear them all enough. I may have to thin the herd but probably would give most away to my nephews and God Sons. Looking forward to the aviation watches. Thanks.

I tried to select one as my preferred one but I can't… As you have to be brave I would also sell the Sub to get cash for the AP, but it's a gift for your birthday, Grrrrr once again I can't decide on watches I want them all. Stop trying to age your watches, time is going fast enough without trying to accelerate. Anyway great to watch your video as always, your voice get more and more on the religious tune, relaxing.

What's with the NDC watch strap? I know you are on good terms with this one brand. But how do you know they are actually the only ones with the original straps? Erika's Originals claims that as well. The problem is, anybody can claim that. Wonder how you actually know, since I'm quite interested in getting one of those straps at some point.
