- A year later and as promised, my annual state of the collection series returns! This time I’ve divided it into a 4-part series with the goal of focusing on the 4 key areas of my watch collection.
In this Part 2 episode I look at my everyday and dress watches, why I love them, what I dislike about them, share which is my favourite, which I have sold or traded in, and discuss my changing tastes.
Included in the episode is the Rolex Explorer 114270, Audemars Piguet BA 25589/002, Tudor Prince Date-Day 76200, Lord Sanford Skindiver, Timex Marlin, Bulova Accutron Spaceview 214 M3, and a Hamilton Masterpiece Thin-O-Matic.

i have not worn a watch since i was at school 25 years ago.i watched your show for a few weeks and then i bought 2 watches in one day.i have the bug.its your fault TGV
Haha, I am equally sorry and happy, welcome to the best past time a person can have.
Enjoy your new watches and the new journey.
Thank you for sharing that, it inspires me to hear it.
Best regards,
TGV
monkefoahead Which 2 watches did you get?
Same thing happened to me. Watched TGV for a few weeks and bought 5. Recommended these videos to my brother and he bought 2. Long live the hobby!!
thebogiebogie What did you and your brother get?
i got the seiko alpinist and sarb033, a rolex submariner and datejust, and a breitling navitimer. my brother got a rolex submariner no date and a GMT master 2.
The Rolex Explorer is my favorite. It’s definitely the Rolex I want to purchase. Your channel is my favorite watch channel because you go into detail about watches. I learn a lot from you.
Angel Acosta I agree! Been watching your videos since 50k below subs! Just purchased my very first luxury watch for my 28 and I loving it! Thanks for inspiring TGV! 🙌🏼
I love the engraving on the back of the Hamilton. It makes me feel like that man's memory lives on with you.
I never get sick of you going on about the explorer
He still hasn't put the AP on a NATO. Is that the real TGV? Btw. love your collection.
LOL, you know me too well. Thank you sir!
Well, even I draw the line somewhere ;-)
Thank you,
Best regards,
TGV
I've only just realized that the lower left part of the screen shows the map of the Philippines. My hometown of Sorsogon is even visible. Really nice :)
I really dig that Audemars Piguet tri-compax perpetual calendar. Pure class! I would add (for the benefit of all viewers) that it is important to project how you might feel if you sold a piece before giving it up. Temporary sickness of a timepiece just might metastasize into extreme regret later.
Seeing your Explorer over the last year has really made me change my mind on which Rolex I would buy if I could afford one. Mainly from the Submariner to the Explorer. Like you said, it's understated elegance will largely go unrecognized, which i can really appreciate. I also think it is a watch that can fill so many roles; daily, dress or tool watch.
If you want something in the same quality range but a bit more affordable you might check out a Grand Seiko. I picked one up recently and find it compares well to the Datejust. I’m currently wearing more than my Submariner.
Watching this while sipping my morning coffee just before I go to work.
My current favorite everyday watch is my new black bay bronze edition I bought on vacation in Geneva 2 months ago!
Still have my Dad's Timex 21 which he bought in 1962. It sat around for decades, never serviced, and still works!
That Seiko works with the turtleneck.
Sterling Archer would be proud.
Hi TGV! Fyi, watchbuys has just announced new Sinn 104 models releasing later this year: anthracite and blue sunburst dials!
TGV,
Seeing your marlin made me finally start looking at vintage ones on ebay.
It's your fault.
Sincerely,
Peter
I've been rocking a vintage Fortis IncaBloc Date. I think that is the model anyway. Really loving the 34mm size which I never thought I would. Love your Tudor. Those two-tones are so 1980s.
I’m loving these SOTC videos Tristano 👍 I wanted to suggest something maybe for your next video, back in Jan 2016 you did a video outlining your favorite 38mm watches, it was a top 10 if I remember correctly? Now I’m a big guy, 6’ 5’’ and I have a 7 and a half inch wrist size however I’ve recently decided to only start wearing 38mm watches as similarly to yourself, I’m moving away from wearing larger size watches as I now think the smaller size actually looks better, neater, more distinguished. So much so that I’ve recently bought the sarb035 and the skx013 even though I previously owned the sarb033 and the skx007 & 009. If I’m being honest I couldn’t be happier with how they wear on my wrist. There just seems to be more of an attraction for a smaller mechanism on my wrist if that makes sense, I’m a big guy but I love the smaller things in life 😂 Anyway I would love it if you could revisit your favorite 38mm watches again soon. Much appreciated, Kieran from Dublin 👍
Thank you Kieran, glad to hear you are also enjoying the smaller watches, for me I have no choice, but then again, Clark Gable was a tall chap and wore a 28mm Rolex!
Very fortuitous of you, I was thinking of doing an update of the video soon.
Best regards,
TGV
That AP moonphase for dress and the explorer for everyday!
I'm usually into busier watches but I absolutely fell in love with that vintage Omega with the blue hands
This is without a doubt , the best watch channel I've seen so far. Very good presentations.
Just bought my first automatic watch 2 weeks ago after discovering your channel 3 weeks ago. Lovely channel! Got myself a Tissot Couturier Powermatic 80 with day date complications as a dress watch and it's just astonishing. Only -2.5 seconds per day
Your taste is quite eclectic & yet you still own a number of iconic timepieces, that's always a good place to be. Onwards & upwards my friend.
That Hamilton is a great looking piece. I personally own the 1962 Accumatic, one of my favorite pieces. Hamilton has a personal spot in my heart since it was the first brand that I bought when I started my own collection years ago.
Explorer and tudor day/date =great 2 piece combo
Love the Explorer... Such a solid looking high quality piece.
I wore my Orient Bambino today on navy nato strap and it made me a pleasant day. It is my only dress/everyday watch and it deserves to be my best casual selection. Nice video TGV!
The best one is Rolex Explorer......
Yes it is .... oll of his colection is nice buy for me Rolex is the best
Agree Explorer is the best. Love AP but not into girlie sizes.
lol why do people dick ride rolex so much
Hey, it's Rolex Explorer! Have mine for almost 2 years and it is the ultimate watch. I hope there never comes a situation that would force me to let it go.
Btw TGV, I remember the time I was already thinking about buying my Explorer for my 30th birthday and that was the time you considered it boring. Then you bought it little bit later and start to love it and it made me kinda happy you appreciating the same watch I do.
Thanks for the good work!
Omega Aqua Terra is by far my favorite dress watch and tops my list of everyday watches as well.
TGV i am a fan of you, i really am. I don't know what to say now! you blow my mind away with that gorgeous Rolex Explorer .
Keep going and blow us away with your honest videos.
Thank you my friend, you are very kind and you have inspired me today.
O&U!
Best regards,
TGV
T, the opening credits are just simply wonderful. Love the way the Lion appears to wink at the camera too. Super as always my friend. Best. Matthew
Great collection, you single handedly opened my eyes to the world of vintage watches
Thank you for the tour of your dress watch collection, TGV. The Tudor is stunning.
Hi TGV!
I’ve seen the Tudor white dial on you, don’t worry about that watch at all, looks amazing on you. Stunning watch. Gold, silver and pure white together represent something very high , solemn and spiritual too.
All your watches point out your excellent taste with respect of the traditional values and heritage, it’s just so gentry, so deep and meaningful.
Best wishes and greetings, Robert
My peeve is when the day window covers the second marks. Always gotta be slightly below that :D
TGV, saved up my mula and purchased two Colareb straps for my Sarbs. Wow what a difference in appearance. Natos are nice but these straps are fantastic. I went with the Venezia in tobacco for my Alpinist and another in black for my Sarb033.
Literally just watched your other two parts of the SOTC!
Didn't expect to see a part three that quickly after viewing them!
I tried on the new Longines Avigation Big-Eye today...you have to see this piece, wonderful.
So funny, I was just looking at one a few days ago.
Thank you Peter, I love it! I might have to visit Longines to take a look.
Best regards,
TGV
Man, that AP is something else! A cut above.
Thank you Neill :D
Best regards,
TGV
The timex with purple nato strap made it very formal and classy.
Starting to understand the love for the Rolex Explorer. That Hamilton is fantastic as well. For me, it's my 1971 Omega Seamaster Cosmic 2000 at 38 mm. Excellent video, thanks!
Hearing that selection of the Hungarian Rhapsody No.2 just makes me hop all over the place!
If my house is on fire and I can only grab one watch, yes it would be the Explorer but I'd go back in to grab the AP. Thanks TGV. I hope you stay with the Watchbox crew for a long time! Wish you the best!
The dressier and everyday watched in my collection - Rolex Oyster Perpetual 39mm dark rhodium dial, Cartier Santos 100 mid size, Tissot PRC 200 and Bering Classic Chronograph.
Did you know that Hunter S. Thompson wore a Spaceview Accutron during his legendary visit to Las Vegas in 1971? He references wearing it in his book, at least once. I'd try and find the quote but it's late enough as it is.
I love the Explorer and it's on my list for down the line for sure. I kinda like the Hamilton, I think it has something nice. The 3/6/9 in gold is a nice change on the Explorer you have. The one I don't like is the Tudor, I think its the pictures myself but the white kinda looks plastic more so than enamel, in the vid the AP dial oozes class and quality, the Tudor doesn't. I also think legibility at low light would be an issue for me on the Tudor with the numerals etc. If I had that AP, I'm honestly not sure that Tudor would see the light of day. They just look very similar in terms of face/bezel etc colours but only one is utter class.
BTW I love Tudor, I own one, bought this year so no brand bias here! ;)
Just got the new silver dial Railmaster and I love the "do it all" funtion of it. Also, he two ladies (wife / daughter) in my life prefer it over my Speedy and Seamaster and my others, so it has that going for it!! I am loving the multi part SOTC vids Tristano. Fabulous job!!
You jammy thing!
I adore the railmaster, enjoy it sir. Your two ladies have just as much good taste in watches as you have! :D
Thank you my friend.
Best regards,
TGV
My god that bulova accutron and the timex on the purple perlon...perfect!
TGV!
Please make a review of the Sea-Gull Ocean Star! It looks nothing near being a hommage and it brings amazing features which push it's bang per buck into the skies.
Going for around 350$ it has Sapphire crystal, 200m WR screw down crown, Hacking and Handwinding, Movement based on the ETA2824-2 beating at smooth 28800 bph, a top notch fit and finish, solid end link bracelet, a crisp 60 click bezel and a very unique design.
I kinda fell in love with it. The only negative in your case I see is, that it is 44m.
The Explorer is the only Rolex I aspire to. Always a pleasure to visit your channel, good vibes and inspiration.
Bravo Sir! I have to say every time I see a Tudor Date/Day, Glamour, etc I think it would be the perfect everyday watch. It’s a little dressy, a little sporty-I’m totally taken with them!
Michael!!! I hope you are well brother.
I think the Glamour would suit your wonderfully. Would you go two tone or steel? I guess we can talk about it next week over pizza ;-)
Thank you,
Best regards,
TGV
I’d go steel for sure-only one of us can pull off the Bateman look! All best!
MPK
I was just watching this and really liked the Hamilton. Went over on ebay to look for one... and I see the exact same one in this video. It's the same strap and same inscription on the back of watch
Explorer - no lumed 3/6/9 and 36mm size give it the ability to be dressy - simple and arguably the best dial layout of any watch/ another Movado Museum - my absolute favorite Rolex 👍🏽 great little series- glad you came back to this- like a full circle as one of your first episodes to catch my eye was a collection review- always great vids 🍻
Part 3 was entertaining. I think what I take away from this session is your appreciation for simplicity and purity. I also appreciated the narrative regarding the Tudor. Poor mans Rolex. I found the appreciation for the Tudor priceless. The truthfulness of AP was refreshing. Grail watches to come, curious. Favorite? He Explorer. Nicely done TGV, onward and upward. Pure Gentry. Until next time, all the best.
Thank you BB!
As always, you kind words and feedback bring a smile to my face.
Onwards and upwards brother!
Best regards,
TGV
Gentry You're pure class my friend. Onward and upward. Gentry. Thank you for the reply.
Datejust with white gold bezel on a Jubilee my favorite. Thanks for a great episode TGV
Great Dress Watch collection! Agree, as nice as they all are, there could be some refinement in this particular collection where there are some overlap.
I believe you were asking us at the end what is our own personal favorite dress watch? If you meant which one we like from your collection. I'd have to go with the Explorer because it's so versatile. But, the dressiest of your bunch has to be the AP.
If you are referring to our own.. for me, the hands down best dress watch has to be my Vacheron Constantin Patrimony from 1974. Otherwise, similar to your Explorer, my 1974 Rolex 6426 Oyster Precision is quite versatile and looks great off the bracelet and on a nice crocodile leather strap.
I only watch the first 5 minutes of the video and thanks to you I end up buying a timex 1970 Marlin lol. Can't wait to start wearing it
This is simply one of the best channels for us. Thank you very much for the awesome content and the history lessons. Best of luck to you and keep up the great work.
I nominate the Hamilton as my favorite dress watch ( it’s too bad that I am in no position to make you an offer should you sell it ), it is very elegant. I admire it’s looks and history. And for favorite everyday wear, I would say the Explorer. It is both the perfect tool watch, and a strap monster! Thank you very much for another wonderful video sir!
In your dress collection my favorite is the hamilton and the explorer, if i had to decide wich one let go i would say the Tudor. I feel like the simplest, more elegant. On my collection, my dress watch is a jules jurgensen. Simple with a beautiful patina that tells a story of dedication every time you look that dial, i would like you taking a look at it and give me your impressions. Love your channel, since i started watching it I love more my small collection. Thank you for inspiring me.
My favorite dress watch that I have in my collection is a Grayton automatic, it has an NH35 movement, beautiful blue hands, a display back, it's a little too big for my wrist but it's surprisingly comfortable for being a 44mm watch, most of my others are a lot smaller but it is a very solid feeling piece.
My favorite watch, after searching and trying different watch styles, is the Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical. It's the closest I've found to everything I want in a watch. I'm a minimalist, so it will be my only watch, besides a beater Casio W-800H.
Loving the Bulova!
Tgv can you pls make a desk/room tour! Love your watchvids greetings from sweden☺️
Could've sworn Lord Sanford was a brand of malt liquor rather than of a watch. Just has that ring to it. Also, I wish dress watches were seen more as everyday watches than reserved for special occasions. My impression is that that is how they were worn prior to steel sports watches becoming dominant in the seventies and eighties.
Your dress watches are pure class, by far your strongest category, love all of them.
Just wanted to drop in and say thank you. Not only do I enjoy the channel but it's also saving me a not insignificant sum of money. Case in point, I decided to go "grey" market for my most recent purchase and - following the excellent advice from this channel along with my own due diligence - will now happily be giving the erstwhile Mrs JJ a rather nice watch for her birthday. And all whilst saving myself several hundred pounds in the process (and still have an AD stamped warranty). So thank you TGV, keep it up guv. It really is most appreciated and drinks on me when in NYC in 10 days time :)
THAT makes it all worth it, thank you JJ,
Please do email me so I can make sure I am around for that drink!
Best regards,
TGV
The Hamilton is truly beautiful, my favorite of the bunch, don't give it away!
Been waiting for the dresswatch part of your collection! Really loving the Marlin, it's so simple and tastefull... Great content as always Tristano!
Thank you Marco, always appreciated.
Best regards,
TGV
You know what I like the most about your collection....it's not ostentatious.just really nice collectable pieces with history and variation and horological interest.good work fella.
Some fine Timepieces there on show TGV...the Rolex is my favourite...love the Tudor aswell..happy times😊
I'm a new watch enthusiast and your fan of course. I'm going to buy a new automatic watch so I'm watching all your videos! You are great! Thank you Sir! Ciao from Italy ;)
Grazie Francesco,
Greatly appreciated, nothing compares to a new automatic, enjoy the hunt!
Best regards,
TGV
The Hamilton with the engraving on the back - magnificent!!!! 👍👍
I picked up a 1942 WWII Longines in France with all the original papers from a soldier that I love to this day, I think I paid around 500 EURO and it simply not replaceable. I went thru a stage of buying vintage pieces but they are for my collection not wearable as I have such a large wrist 7.5" but I do love the classics which you wear so well.
TGV, I am a massive Tudor fan and only recently have decided to delve into Rolex for, guess what... my 30th in March next year. opting for a Sub No Date I think your video on the Explorer here has put some serious doubt in my mind whether the no date is the right one for the landmark date in my life. For me, the Explorer is just as you said... pure class, but I really do think the fact it is on that gorgeous strap makes the "Pure Class" statement relevant. Never has a strap changed my mind on a watch before. Excellent video and long may you continue to alter my perceptions of watches ;)
Great dress watches/everyday watches, I just recently acquired a sarb035 love it. It is a casual yet dressy piece.
I love that Bulova! Also, the Hamilton may have a bit of a Colorado connection as they have had a plant here all my life. Who knows? One of the great things about vintage-it is fun to wonder. Thanks for the great video! Best-David
I had no idea, how cool is that.
BTW, I long to visit Colorado, looks amazing. Perhaps this is a good excuse ;-)
Thank you David,
Best regards,
TGV
As always, You made my day TGV. Watching Your videos after a long day in school is Just a great thing for me.
Because of Your videos, i know much more about watches than my dad, although I'm only 13😅.
I saved up some money and bought a Citizen AW 5000 - 24E Field watch with an Eco drive and a wr100 water resistant. I have a Vostok Komandirskie from 1990 that my grandfather was wearing too. ( Now it's on a NATO strap and it looks gorgeous😎)
So that is my journey with watches! I was thinking that it would be cool to share it with you😉
Cheers!
Charlie from Poland
wow! that AP is one of the most beautiful watches I have ever seen.
Seeing this video drove home the point for me: you, my friend TGV, have superb, eclectic taste in watches.
I am deeply flattered.
Thank you my friend.
Best regards,
TGV
Great video as ever TGV! I started watching the channel a few months ago and bought my first proper watch shortly after. It is a Longines Jamboree reference 6884 (1962),and it's a gorgeous little watch. I have small wrists, but it fits beautifully and works as both a dress watch with my kilt or as an every day watch with a suit at work. I am going to buy some more straps and experiment, just have a black lizard strap now. Thank you for inspiring me to get started, unfortunately after watching your videos I have a very long list of watches to buy next! Most likely is going to be Tudor Pepsi GMT, lovely watch.
Any love for vintage King Seikos? They have the same classic style and versatility the Explorer does.
Hi TGV
What can you say...a marvelous collection of good taste surely.
I can completely understand why the Rolex Explorer is your favorite, elegant and understated. Just as good for every day as for a business meeting. Well, even for suit & tie with the right strap. Oh yeah, I would like to have one. Until then I will have to stick with my DJ, which has some of the same qualities all though being more of a dress watch. I will never get rid of that one😊
I have never been a big fan of two tone watches, but that Tudor has the magic nevertheless. The AP too...
You will let that Hamilton go, you say? Well, just post it to me. (Come again! Oh, you want money?!? Cruel world...)
Keep up the good work👍
That Rolex Explorer is the only Rolex that I have ever seen, that I feel would be wearable. I don't really like Rolex that much, but that is a gorgeous, understated watch.
Explorer favorite by far, and the Marlin is no slouch either, I guess I too like the lack of complications.
That wristwatch check was epic. I mean it fits the rest of your outfit down to perfection! Pure class. 😘
Thank you Tamara, very kind of you to say.
Best regards,
TGV
"In many ways it kind of encapsulates me... no, that sounds a bit pretentious." LOL
Hi TGV, the Explorer looks great on the strap. ⌚️⏱👍
That AP is what changed my taste in watches ... All I care about and buy is dress watches now
A beautiful part of your collection. Especially the Hamilton, man it is so lovely. By the way, the slightly longer hair suits you very well! :) Thanks for sharing this great insight. Greetings, Sebastian
Thank you Sebastian, very kind of you to say.
I knew you would like the Hammy, very much your style!
Best regards,
TGV
My dress watches are
Vintage Timex
Seiko cocktail time
New issue marlin and the burgundy automatic Marlin
Every day- Timex easy reader, Navi harbor maritime sport, Rolex Submariner
Various other divers, Chronos, pitot watches Hamilton etc
Those vintage Omega Geneve's are such good affordable options. Great vid
I have one good recommedation for everyday watch for you guys, economical alternative for omega speedmaster :) Its Swatch Dark Phoenix, it tick all boxes for me (on a black rubber strap) so in the end I bought seamaster instead, all the best to gentry and governor ;)
seriously loving that hamilton. I think it's probably my favourite of your collection
Love the Explorer. My go to dress/every day is my 1961 Omega Seamaster De Ville
I have my grandfather's bulova accutron. It truely is a eye catching conversation piece. It is cracked and needs service but i hate to ship it off.
Just great to finish off a tough work weekend with a new gentry video! thank you very much!
That makes me happy to hear, I hope your next week is better.
Stay strong my friend.
Thank you,
Best regards,
TGV
Thanks TGV for sharing this video. I must say you have an amazing collection
Just bought an Accutron in large part thanks to your review.
Would you recommend I buy a vintage hamilton, longines or omega for my vintage dress watch
I absolutely could not agree more about the Rolex Explorer. It is my current grail watch. So common, yet so dressy, I’ll own one here soon some day.
