The 'carb inside the engine' phenomenon you've just discovered was fairly common practice with small rotary valve two strokes (think reed valves, but a different way of induction). Yamaha and Suzuki also used this layout.

Thanks Lee, yes there's a lot I need to learn about 70s and 80s two strokes, love the engineering on this bike

Does the small end bearing wobble when the pin is put back in?
I seem to recall that the rollers in the cage move freely and are pushed outwards when the pin is in?
Was a good few years ago when I last played with 2 strokes 🤣
Good luck with the rebuild, lovely little bike 👌🏻

Watching with interest. I have a 1992 (not as nice as yours) and a 1889 for parts in the garage when I get time to rebuild

I have just been gifted a 1992 from my brother, I will start to restore it in a few weeks (my first bike 🥰) and using it to get me through my test. I can't wait to start my relationship with this beast 😁

Before you start spending money on parts or work that you don't need, you ought to find out what the service limits are of engine consumable parts. The concern is that in particular with the small end bearing, you're feeling 'end float' and confusing that with actual wear. Not all bearing movement is a 2-stroke is bad.

ok thanks yes I will do that, so far I've only ordered the parts for the bottom end which did look worn, the top end parts may be good to go again - I'm intending to put it all together and see how it runs next
