  • Welcome to another episode that is a continuation of a series of videos regarding the engine rebuild that will eventually be fitted to my 62 Karmann Ghia. Because I never run heaters in any of my VWs there are a few modifications I like to make to the tinware to eliminate the heating system. In this video I cover some welding tips that I use and hope if your are thinking of doing this yourself then encourages you to give it a go.
Thanks for watching. Please like and subscribe and leave a comment. Jamie

When you remove the shroud heater ports, drill out the 2 spot welds that holds the inner vein. It’s what directs the air to the port. Once drilled out pull it away from the shroud and cut it 2-3 inches up. This will allow the air to flow and not dead head. Seal off the 2 spot weld holes that were drilled.
If you don’t run the thermostat at least run the flaps. Weld them in the open position. Will send more of the cool air to head and not the cylinders allowing the cylinders to heat up, expand and help seal against the “cool”head. That’s also the design idea around the thermostat. You can buy the flaps that way too. I know them called “Cali flaps” Great video.

Thanks so much for your tips. Yes it makes a lot of sense that now the outlets have been blocked that the air now hits a dead end. I'm still in two minds about fitting the thermostat maybe I will just fit it as a friend has some spares. Jamie

@@jamiedowson6482 I had a super Beetle in my early 20's then sold it and got a Triumph Spitfire and sold it because life changed when you get married. So now that I am close to retirement I got a Spitfire working on but always loved the Vw Bugs so I have been looking around for one or a Karmenn Ghia for the next project for the channel. Keep going your doing great on the build and the channel! Cheers my friend!

Hello there. Yes you sure can. Its just an acrylic satin black rattle can. I would think halfords or B&Q would. I once bought roll cage satin black paint from ebay and it was super stuff. Hope this helps. Jamie

I would keep the thermostat in working order. Your engine will last longer.

Because I mainly use my VWs in warmer whether I thought they're not so important? Also if the thermostat fails the flaps would stay in the closed position and the engine could overheat? Jamie

@@jamiedowson6482 The thermostat setup, is designed to fail open. It your engine. Just my opinion.
