  • A fast and easy way to patch a large hole in plasterboard walls
Here is a simple way for repairing a large hole in plasterboard walls.
You will only need a few simple tools to repair the drywall.
A Straight edge, a Sharp stanley knife or similar, a Scrap piece of plasterboard (drywall), some plaster tape, a Plaster spreader, a short piece of timber, a few screws, an Electric Drill and a small drill bit, a Pencil and some premixed plaster filler, and some paint and brushes to cover the finished repair.
I was asked if I could repair some large drywall holes in the plasterboard walls of this rental property.
So I decided to make a short video, showing how I went about repairing the plasterboard, and restored them back to new condition.
On the day of the repair, I was onsite doing unrelated work, and didn't have all my tools with me.
I sourced some of bits I used from a dumpmaster bin out the front of the property.
📌 P.S. I have a better instruction video below, (when I had all my tools with me.)
📌 • 🏠 DIY How to Repair Dr...
The Plasterboard is called Gyprock and its made by CSR, its coated on both sides with grey paper. (found onsite)
The tape is fiberglass and made specially for Plaster.
Screws can be anything as long as they are countersunk. (found onsite)
The wood I used was a piece of scrap timber. (found onsite)
    Plaster spak. (found onsite)

How not to fill a hole lol,,, This guy is not a tradesman,,, What a bodge up. Not how I'd have done it,,, Someone should teach this bloke how to do it properly,,, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah...... Been in the industry for years and i have seen many a tradesman do heaps worse ( ie - Newspaper , Cardboard etc )...... This bloke is showing the basics and he got the exact result that ANYONE is looking for.... As for all the tools with their opinions - please troll someone else and go and buy a left hand screwdriver.....

Unfortunately there are many couch experts who have no idea as to what really happens on job sites, and live in a world of fantasy.
I would like to see some of them perform a task they have not been forewarned about, and without any tools for the job, as I found myself on this occasion.
P.S. This repair is now 4 years old, and is impossible to locate on the finished painted wall.

I did the exact same repair with the small piece of 2x3 wood and some extra drywall. Except, I bevelled all the edges (wall and filler piece). About a decade later, I ran the repair by a drywall guy and he told me that instead of making the filler panel square, his recommendation was to use a round shaped filler panel utilizing an appropriate sized kitchen pot lid as a template. He told me that this would prevent possible filler cracking in the corners.

Great job there, also folks, when you go to sanding it, do not use an electric sander, but use your hand with sand paper like this gentlemen is using. I learned the hard way using an orbital sander, yes she did the job well, but the silica within the plaster will coat the sanders brushes, then you have to take the sander apart and replace the brushes ..which is more time, and money.

The concept is good; I have done hundreds of drywall patches, and I don’t claim to know everything on the subject. Every time I see someone else doing a patch, I walk away with more knowledge; add more modern tools to this concept and you’ll speed up the process, and no, there is no drama in breaking the paper with the drill, that piece of wood is there just to hold the piece of drywall while applying the mud, once it sets, you could retrieve your wood if you were able to. I’d like to see a tutorial of stuffing the hole with crumbled up newspaper and patching over it like some of you have stated to have done; and see how you fare on the web.

Juan Morales Juan iv been doing drywall patches for years and it's way better to put the backing on both sides of the patch on the inside of the hole also if you never want it to ever crack before you lay your tape or mesh apply latex caulking all the way around your cuts then apply your tape or mesh believe me it's great no cracks ever in some cases you dont need tape. Just let the caulking dry completely before putting the mud on

The job you did was done nicely but I just wanted to know why was the sheetrock installed on backwards. There is an ink code on back of the sheetrock that will tell you the date and time and even the shift who made the sheetrock. I even had to inspect the sheetrock for thickness, strength and water absorption on the Water resistant sheetrock. Other than the sheetrock being installed backwards. You did an exceptional job. Some friendly advice. Never use anything but fast setting mud over mesh tape (looked like Green label all purpose, but not sure). Put backing in on 2 opposite sides and it won't rock like that and will be much stronger. Use a 10-12" knife to float it out, as a 6" is not going to give you nearly as good a job. Use the 6" to embed it, but go over the final times with a 10" or bigger and it will float out great. Also, if you use fast setting mud, (hot mud) it allows you to put multiple coats on in one day, and it doesn't shrink. But be sure to put it on very smooth as it's terrible to sand. Otherwise I'd go with all purpose and paper tape. Just trying to give some helpful pointers to viewers.

Nice concept but I thought I was going to have a stroke with his crooked cuts. Whenever I cut drywall I usually cut back to the studs, but this one was borderline cut or patch. Thought he was going to cut a finger off. And get a workbench. What was he cutting on? Microwave or an AV receiver? Spackel? Too large of a hole. Use mud. Especially if you are using tape. Use a taping knife. Wet it to keep material from clumping and dragging across workspace. End result...did it matter, not really. Just pride mainly. Plus I can clean up alot less with a wet sponge instead of sanding. Thanks for the idea though and the bravery of putting this up. Has over a million views so that's quite an accomplishment in itself.

One tip, if available use two pieces of wood at either end of your repair, that way the piece of drywall is a bit more stable. (Specifically for larger repairs)

Don't know why this came up on my feed but I'm grateful :D Nice neat job and the trick of adding a small slat behind the hole is a great tip for supporting the section of replacement plasterboard.
I love fixing things and have done a few patches like this in the last few years - the first one I did was a shallow hole where I had to move an electric cable a few inches - builders left cable in a daft place - but what did I use to create some scaffold for the plaster within the hole?? Yes, a few balls of newspaper! Worked a treat but the trick is to add a few slops of filler onto the newspaper balls after plugging them into the gap and smooth them towards the hole edges; however, don't try to fill the hole/crevice completely to finish the job in one shot. Instead, let the thing dry; then come back in a couple of days and you've got a solid but rough and shallow hole that will easily adhere the final small wodge of filler. This will be easy to smooth off when wet cause it's not too thick; then come back in another couple of days and sand, paint and you're done.
