    I spent a month in Tallinn and loved it, except it was bitterly cold and snowy even in April. It was very safe and totally walkable, friendly people, English-speaking, good transportation and fast, reliable Internet. My only two reservations about retiring here is I'm not sure there would be enough to keep me busy and it's nowhere near a warm beach.

      @00_UU 25 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      How much beach is needed? I live near the beach and I haven’t been there for 7 years. European cold is different from Midwestern cold. Winters are much more mild in Europe. How do I know? I grew up there

    Hi Dan! I was in Tallinn last week and also this week for a couple of days. I guess we've been there at more or less the same time! I live in Helsinki and I have lost count of how many times I've been in Tallinn. It is indeed a very beautiful city and the old town is a real jewel. I believe the weather is something that should be taken into serious consideration, as Tallinn is at almost the same latitude as Anchorage. Winters are very long, dark and cold and for many people it could be a little too much. By the way, welcome to Finland!

    Phone and internet are a lot cheaper when you are not a tourist. I pay 6€ for unlimited internet, calls, sms, and 15GB within EU
    home internet, i pay 20€ for 500Mbps up and down
    Restaurants are more expressive though in my experience ðŸ˜

    They begin teaching english here in the 2nd grade. Its the international language of business and IT which is huge in Tallinn. Its the tech startup hub of N Europe. It was also ruled by Sweden from 1561 until 1721 and some parts still speak Swedish. Estonian health care is pretty good, I've been happy with it having had a few surgeries here. Dental is greatly improved over the last 10 years and is not (practically) covered. Also transport is not free at any level. Its included in taxes of Tallinn registered residents. The busses/trams/fuel cost money and the drivers are paid. Not free. Non-residents of Tallinn must buy a pass. Heating many times here is per sqM of your flat, so expect that to be high in winter. It can be as much as rent.

      Well, there's 60€ per year comp. for working people and 105€ for pensioners for dental work, which is quite ok, if you have healthy teeth and a state health insurance, which costs foreigners 238€ per month if she/he has pension from another country. To get free public transport you need to be registered city resident, not a tax resident, so I'm not sure what you mean by 'incl. in local taxes'. You can live in Tallinn without paying any monthly or yearly taxes, if you are here less than min. needed to become a tax resident, but still would get free public transport.

    Hi Vangabond Awake, A metric you may want to also include, is the cost of healthcare and income taxes. Those of us who are in the U.S. That is our primary concern for relocating. The price of healthcare. Quite honestly, I compaired these prices (medium) to what I pay and with the exception of cell and drinking water they are only a couple of hundred dollars cheaper than what I am paying in Texas today. So, not sure if it is really that cheap for one person. You have, I assume replaced car with public transportation so I guess that could be one area where an American could save money but the kicker is healthcare. And one would have to factor in additional income taxes in Estonia as well.

    • @hannesh234
      @hannesh234 18 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      The majority of healthcare in Estonia is provided and paid for by the state via Estonian Health Insurance Fund. However, to access this fund, you need to be: Employed with a contract for at least one month; or. A permanent or temporary resident paying premiums into voluntary insurance. I am a national and for the most part, it depends of course is quite cheap. The dependencies come from your risk groups or whether you have a refferral for an appointment from your personal physician. I've had a lot of health problems, but for the most part my bloodwork has ranged from 15 euros to 50 euros. My physiotherapist appointments are totally free thanks to my referral. My dentist appointments have been the most expensive, going from 115 euros to 240 for some more extensive surgeries. The taxes for healthcare are included in the social tax, which comes to be 33% all together. However there is a minimum. Most recently, if you earn less than 725 euros, you are completely free from the tax. The taxes in Estonia also differ from the amount you get paid. The more you get paid the more you get taxed, up to a point from which it will not grow. So the 33% is around the max I think. This is for the most part my understanding of it. If there is anything wrong, I'm certain someone will correct me. Also all the info on the taxes in Estonia you can find on emta.ee. The website can be switched to English, so there shouldn't be any need to translate on your own.

      Great question @ParisianThinker, I have one report where I explain what I do about health care and another where I show you how I search for health insurance, and a third report sharing which one I decided to finally buy.

      Here is the Health Insurance I bought (and scams to avoid): th-cam.com/video/0leF_BCLVKw/w-d-xo.html
      By the way, once you search for health care you will start seeing more offers for health insurance and travelers insurance when you are online. Health insurance is one of the most dynamic or changing industries in the travel world because so many people around the world are deciding to live or retire outside their home country. So do a search every year before you renew to make sure you have the best available for your personal circumstances because new ones come out every few months. Thanks for asking so I could answer this for many people! Dan
