    Hey man I built this farm today. Works great and I was able to make some improvements. Added a roof extending over the stairs to not worry about rain. In that roofed section put some quick storage as well as an iron pit fire. The fire at the top level there allows the eggs stuck in the chute to hatch and fall. Couldn't get them to fall down the chute so cage walled off the perimeter and added a door. Added some seeds to the bottom with no fires around for a good meat and feather farm. Best solution I could find for the chute problem

    Great video! I built this as a replacement to my buddy's tower on our server bc his stopped working and he was never able to get it back up and running again. I tried to follow this video step for step, but like others I had some issues and made some changes/improvements in my version of the build...
    1) My hens seem overly claustrophobic. I wasn't able to use the angled 1x1 pieces that are recommended for centering your seed throwing, but fortunately that is totally optional anyway. I also couldn't build a door and keep it shut or else they'd stop laying eggs, but FOR NOW an iron gate seems to be fine.
    2) Very minor upgrade - I added another iron grate partway up the tower for troubleshooting purposes. I had some issues getting things to work initially because I screwed something up and forgot to break a half-wall which was catching eggs halfway down ... lack of visibility made it hard to realize what was happening. Now I can peek inside and take a look around if/when something ever gets funky.
    3) This was the big one. The eggs WILL indeed sometimes spawn above/behind the ramp that the hens are on, but the close secondary slide was getting a lot of eggs stuck right below the hens & the system would effectively turn itself off. And if they didn't get stuck on THAT ramp, they sometimes got stuck on the ramp below THAT. I decided that I would build catch ramps as low as I could on the tower, so the LAST thing that happens is that the eggs falls and is redirected to the center where you can pick up all the eggs. This results in a much wider tower overall (since I walled it in to make sure it's still a bat-proof closed system) but it works MUCH better.

    Awesome design. I did a modified version by digging down and using core wood instead of using iron bars.
    Chicks get trapped in the pit. Using the iron to instead set up an obliterator down there to explode all the hens at once using the AoE damage from the lightning

    For anyone wondering, this 100% Works still as of 11/05/23
    I followed it step by step and t started producing eggs within minutes. Had 10 within 3 minutes after the chickens started to eat.
    My only side advice is, when you go to push the chickens into the spot he mentions, have a door up or you risk a tricky game of pushing the chicken.
    Also MAKE SURE you have the feed in the spot indicated or they wont eat. If you miss throwing the feed, itll be in the opening where you collect eggs.
    Also i had no eggs fall out of where expected. HAIL my fellow Midgardians
    EDIT: The chickens will not eat unless the feed is in the exact spot, itll pay to memorize where exactly that spot is. Also, i made a walkway underneath the chickens so i can retrieve eggs that get stuck on the roof panel they lay them on. Make sure to reinforce all of the structure with iron if you can.

    I have my seeds and flowers right where you have them, but they arent eating. Edit: took them a while but they started eating. Don't know why they werent eating at first. Edit 2: Its working. Hens are laying loads of eggs and are falling where they should be. Thanks for the Egg farm!. Edit 3: The chickens have stopped eating for some reason. I've tried putting the seeds back in the same spots and yeah no dice. Edit 4: So I did as one of the commenters suggested, I removed the angle 1x1's above the chickens to aim the seeds at. As soon as I removed them, the Hens started eating

    To fix the eggs getting stuck, simply have the lower roof snap point slightly out further than the top slope roof so that in the middle of the ramp rather than a connection of two roofs, its more of a step down onto the other ramp. works good for me anyways none have gotten stuck since that change. The lower roof is like an inch lower than the other one, you can physically see if from outside that the two roof arnt using the same snap point cuz the lower one sticks out just a bit. Idk how to describe it better i hope that makes sense

    I made this chicken farm design recently. For the most part I play solo. It's so effective in fact that after a reinforced chest full of eggs i had to slaughter the hens. Easy enough to produce more eggs. Thanks for the video.

    Tried it and it works great. Change I made:
    I killed the first batch of chickens with smoke, so I hung an iron floor on the outside of the structure four meters below the chickens on the side that doesn't have chickens above it. Put a 45 roof piece over it to keep it from going out. This forced the smoke away from the birds and kept them warm. Removed the additional roof and floor after they hatched.

    On one side of the main column below the secondary egg shoot, replace the half-wall and the wall below it with a half wall then a door on top of that. If eggs stop producing due to stuck eggs, which happens frequently, you just have to remove that shoot, open the door, put down a floor to stand inside the column, and you can troubleshoot from underneath the hens....way easier than trying to poke around from above.

    I didn't build the same tower as his, but I used the stalls that he has. Worked well. I had to move the food backboard closer a bit because I'm using barley instead of seeds.
    Eggs do sometimes get caught up on the 45 degree ceiling that the chickens are standing on. I have only that one 45 ceiling. So they are not getting caught up on the seam between the two ceilings. Still works pretty good.. Just need to temporarily remove a 2x2 sometimes to remove eggs.

    SHORT: Doesnt work anymore
    LONG: Eggs are no longer able to roll away/down on one piece of 45degree roof everytime. So this and any other farm using roofs as base for chicken to stand on will get clogged within minute/s. In confined space of your example, one egg will stop the breeding completely, and with this design, you are not able to pick up the egg from the roof the chickens are standing on.
    Few hours after recent patch, i still havent found a workaround for any type of egg farm.
    Edit: Found a way, they need to be standing in middle of the sloped roof, so the egg travel only half the distance on the roof, and then to the ground. No catchers from roofs underneath, they get clogged much more easilly.

    • @spook1614
      @spook1614 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ataxias8183 I'll disagree, Eggs will get stuck on Shingles as well... at least if they have to travel the full length. If you use the half length method, it works well. In addition, not having issues with Eggs "falling through" tiles either, so the extra backup ramps aren't necessary anymore either. That being said, with ALL eggs going down a full length of the roof tile, more get caught more often. Constantly having to clean/clear out stuck eggs.

    • @Praxxus
      @Praxxus ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Based on your info I built one with the chickens standing in the middle of 1 45-degree tile, with a second 45-degree tile under it connected to the tower, positioned so the eggs also only rolled half of its length.
      Seems to work great! I just let it run for an hour and got 96 eggs in the bin and 0 stuck.
      And it's still pretty simple to close it off and make it look less ratty/protect from bats. Use a 26-degree roof piece to connect the original roof to the back of the ramp...

      Just built one of these today and I noticed the occasional egg getting stuck, maybe 1 in 20 or so. I wonder if you replaced the 45 degree roof with 45 degree beams stacked next to each other it would fix the problem?

    • @spook1614

      I've been running the half ramp now for 3 days, 4 towers, and they work great(no backup ramps,), with only the VERY occasional stuck egg(1 in a few hundred). Chickens have been kicking out major quantities of eggs. As an aside one of my towers I put a Ramp on the bottom, just above a 2 meter wall(to keep chicks climbing) eggs fall into a room with a heat source, and viola... Chicken farm.

  • @ragus3321
    @ragus3321 ปีที่แล้ว

    As of 12/17/2023 This design still works. Although, note that eggs will get stuck about every 5-10 times and the 45 degree slanted 1x1 wood walls you place to line the seeds up to feed the chickens blocked the hens line of sight of the seeds for me. I would recommend setting up the slanted 1x1 wood wall to place each stack of seeds and then removing them so the hens have sight of the seeds, that seemed to fix my issue.

    Hi. I am relatively new to the game but have made it to Mistlands so far. I built your egg farm design and had great luck the first couple of days and then the chickens decided they wanted to face in the opposite direction. Is there a way to get them back in the correct position to feed and lay? I've put food down but no luck. I even killed them for the meat and started over with eggs. They do the same thing, not sure what to do. I've tried other designs and gotten so frustrated with their mods and flying that I find I can't follow their build. Thank you so much for posting this one which I totally followed step by step.

    this farm is very fast and good, Im very impressed by your design but I also have a problem - the eggs sometimes stay under the chicken and after some time it stops the farm from working, because the limit is filled. I can go pick them up from time to time but its kinda annoying and I just wonder if theres a fix for that, I havent thought about any fix so Im going here to look for help.

  • @JoshuaKA02
    @JoshuaKA02 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I haven't tried(just reinstalled and setting up mods), but you could terrace the roof pieces so that they aren't directly connected to each other.
    Then again, reading the comments just now about the last update, I wonder if free-placing the roof pieces underneath each other would counteract whatever mechanic is stopping the eggs getting down. For a better mental picture, think of stacking roofs directly on top of each other, but moving each one slightly to the side as you go down so that anything that slides down the ramp this forms only has to travel down a quarter or less of that roof piece before falling to the next.
    This would take more resources, but if it works and they want the aesthetic no biggie.

    Haha, the next project for you (the one I was planning to do with refactoring, and will do some day): a quad megafarm, so 4 towers are spaced enough to avoid limits, and all send eggs to one collection box via diagonal chutes.

    • @drag0neye7

      You’d definitely need to make it tall enough to allow items enough speed to travel such horizontal distances. Ramps that are too long often slow eggs down enough to eventually stop them on the ramp. The real challenge here stems from item transportation toward a central location, really. I suspect a really tall tower might be needed to utilize shorter ramps with fall-spaces between them to recuperate lost speed. But if a design can be made to not require excess height to the tower and still prevent egg loss, that’d definitely be an accomplishment.

    • @heptagonrus
      @heptagonrus 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@drag0neye7 Thanks for insights! Indeed, I had issues in my fat towers when guiding eggs a bit diagonally. That's why I always use one full 2 meter vertical chute between any diagonal slopes, exactly as you say, for recuperating speed (still does not help sometimes).
      That's why I try to inspire 04AM's bright mind to solve all the potential issues first and then use his polished solution :D :D :D

    Nice design! I’ve also spent hours building chicken breeder designs, though my goal was to design a structure compact enough to allow all Hens to eat from the same singular pile of seeds, which I managed to accomplish. My current “cell” area for the Hens themselves is a 1x2x2 footprint, comprised of two 1x2x1 compartments stacked on top of each other with two hens in each. I found that the top Hens can actually eat from a seed pile placed on the floor behind the wall of the bottom Hen’s section, which allows all 4 Hens to eat from that pile.
    By nature, this avoids any race conditions created that could happen by chance with 6 Hens. For example, if by chance 5 Hens attempt to lay an egg simultaneously, 1 of those eggs will be denied its spawn due to the creature limit. So the ultimate goal was to create a lossless design, and that ultimately resulted in attempting to optimize 4 Hens.
    I also agree with you though, the standard cell design can be finicky. But I managed to create a systematic and repeatable way to build the 4 Hen system so that it always works (in addition, the design is fully bat-proof with consistent egg drop locations). Building two of these a little more than 10 meters apart results in a ludicrous amount of eggs without any seeds going to waste.
    In any case, thank you for the video! It was a well structured build guide.

      Would love to see ur design also!

    • @drag0neye7
      @drag0neye7 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dukesaru It’s honestly not hard to imagine xD. It’s just the bog-standard 2 Hen cell design (i.e. two 1x1-meter floors, surrounded by two 1x1-meter walls and two 1x2-meter walls) but with a second equivalent cell stacked on top. I replace one of the 1x2-meter walls with 2 1-meter wooden beams across the top of each cell, which allow access into the cells without giving enough room for the Chickens to escape. At that point, you just slap a roof on top, a fire nearby, and toss 4 eggs in (2 into each cell). However, I personally build two free placed temporary 2x2-meter walls behind the back walls of the cells just to thicken them, which prevents Chickens from glitching outside the box when they hatch. Those can be removed once the Hens are grown.
      The back wall is where you can toss the seeds, dead center on a floor. All 4 Hens can eat from it due to the top cell Hens actually being capable of reaching a stack on a 1 meter diagonal line downward.
      I can post an image or record a quick build of the design if you’d prefer that!
      You can enclose everything to bat-proof the cells (cap the top with more floors and hide the Hens with an iron wall).

    4-10-23 (UPDATE/EDIT) As of this date it doesn't really work, the eggs were always getting stuck on the 45' ramp. Its better to just build a 10x10< short building using core wood for strength a roof and door. Raise four chickens inside and let them lay eggs. If you want them to hatch for the meat place a bonfire near by. No iron needed, no lame stairway winding around the tower, no having to tear the floor apart to grab the eggs that get stuck. You wont get eggs very fast but at least it works.

    • @sonicpulse535
      @sonicpulse535 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Trefor Bastion The hens turned away form me too. They eventually did turn, maybe when you toss the seeds and they land on the edge they'll turn around. I just recently changed my comment on this video. Its too much of a pain to build this and 90% of the time it doesn't work. I did build something around a 10x10 short building with core wood a roof and door. Raised four chickens and let them lay eggs. Place a bonfire near by to hatch the eggs if you want the meat.

    Posted this already once yesterday... not sure where it went. Anyway, fantastic design! but alas the eggs getting stuck in the shoot is a problem eventually but not unmanagable. In our game we have several mods including one that adds a floor hatch. One way we can fix it, open the hatch, place a floor tile and go in and grab the stuck eggs. The other, which will work in vanilla is to make an access port one floor below. We also did a more elaborate stair system which lends to this very well. The last Iron Grate is replaced with 2 Wood Iron beams on either side of the portal below. To be able to do the fire to hatch your initial chickens you would need a 3rd iron beam across the top.
    I'd post some picture links but my post keeps getting deleted...

    Great tutorial, and interesting solution to get eggs :). I had two minor problems with this build that I hope you could address in a follow-up:
    (1) Eggs sometimes do not roll down the thatched roof ramp and down the chute, and instead just start accumulating on the roofs. Occasionally, I have to remove the 2x2 floor at the top, build a floor 2m down, and then manually collect the eggs sitting on the roofs, then remove the floor and put the floor back at chicken-level. Not the most ideal - maybe a shingled roof would work better? I have not yet tried.
    (2) I use barley for feed, and your blocking/guiding system works about 25% of the time - usually one hen ends up still hungry, the barley ends up on the ramp, or just ends up too far away. I ended up removing the angled 1x1s and just throw two piles directly on the 1x2 block, one for each hen to feed on. Maybe it's different for seeds? Would be good to note that the system only works for seeds if so (and sorry if I missed it if you already did).

      @user-wb9de8no7p 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I dont know exactly the limit but if youre talking about the farm - yes, because the eggs fall far enough for the chickens to not register them and their limit is not filled. If you just have chickens lay eggs under them they will stop after the limit is filled (I think Its something like 10-15 chickens and eggs). Sometimes the eggs get stuck under them in this farm, you have to pick them up manually from there to make the farm work again.

  • @yips_way

    I want to know how I manage to get 26 hens in my chicken coop (4m x 3m) on a regular basis, then if I kill a few they don't lay anymore all the way down to 10 hens. Then if I kill 4 more of the hens I get back up to 26 lol. I go out to explore & come back to a surprise - or not, depending on how the game feels. The worst part is eggs spawing outside my coop, or worse still the chicks themselves, although I've managed to get good at pushing them back into the main coop. As a rule now I collect the eggs & kill the hens to 6 left each time.

    • @kittencobbler

      It'll stop working if there's more than 8-10 chickens within 10 meters of each other. They'll just keep eating seeds and won't lay anymore eggs. So it's okay if you collect them every day. But I just gave my chickens in a normal coop 60 seeds, they multiplied until there was 8 of them, and then just ate all the seeds without even laying more eggs.

    • @edgibbs2794
      @edgibbs2794 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Instead of using iron grates or stone pillars (which would require iron to make a stonecutter bench), you could use the hoe to raise a 2x2 patch of ground up to get the fire close enough, then knock it down again with a pickaxe once the eggs hatch. However, since you can't get eggs until defeating Yagluth, this is somewhat of a moot point.

    • @JoshuaKA02
      @JoshuaKA02 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is a creature limit that stops things like breading/egg-laying/hatching if there are too many creatures/eggs in close proximity to one another. You could just let them bread/whatever naturally, but you'd have to come butcher/gather much more often and get less resources compared to something that accounts for this mechanic and breads constantly.
      You could do the same thing as in this video and others, but have half of it underground if you dig down as far as it will let you(8 units/meters, or 4 full walls I think).
      Another option would be finding a mod that lets you change this mechanic somehow, but I do not know if one exists right now, or if you want to use mods or not.

      had to turn off my 8 chicken farm after I filled a reinforced chest with eggs, and a reinforced chest with chicken meat. Had 2 sets for eggs and 2 sets for more chickens. I built it 14 meters instead of 12 since the baby chicks hit boxes are huge, and when they stand on each other, they can easily get 2-3 meters high, and if you built 12 meters, they would kill your production. This is cool, but WAY overkill.
