      I've read, that Titanic had the blue British Flag, because she was a royal mail ship and royal mail ships also had the blue flag.
      So the RMS is the main reason for the colour of the flag and not, if the Officers served at the royal navy 🙈

    Great feature on Titanic's flags Mike! Flags are a hobby of mine and a fascinating study when you get into it. You hit all the high points.
    In case anyone's wondering about the white border around the Union Jack of the pilot flag (also known as a jack, flown from a ship's bow while in port but not at other times) an unmodified Union Jack (properly known as the Union Flag) is restricted to use by the Royal Navy, no other vessels are allowed to fly (or "wear") it. However on land the Union Flag is the national flag of the UK and anyone can fly it.

    Very interesting and enjoyable video. I remember a flag moment in the book Raise the Titanic. Just as the stern is slipping under, a crew member (played by Alec Guinness in the horrible movie) instinctively grabs onto the White Star flag on the stern (factual error). He get pulled under but eventually the flag is freed and he comes to the surface and is rescued. Years later he gives the flag to the crew who would raise the Titanic so they could return the flag to the ship. Yes, very corny and silly, but as a kid I gobbled it up.

      If I remember right, Dirk Pitt (the hero of Clive Cussler's novels in those days)reties it back on the mainmast (which has been cut to a height of about 8 feet during the salvage operations). The crew member is young officer John Bigelow, a "stand-in" for Lightoller, who grabs the burgee as the mainmast is going under (he dives off the ship at the very last second after being forced to lead Joshua Hays Brewster down to the "vault" on G-Deck and racing to escape the ship as it plunges) and gives it to Pitt when he tells him about the raising operation, so that it can be returned to the place it belongs. It should be noted that the book was written some years before the wreck was found, so in both book and movie the ship is intact.

  • @toddkurzbard
    @toddkurzbard ปีที่แล้ว +29

    Learned something interesting from this - I always believed the 'standard' flags like the burgee and Blue\Red Ensign were flown at ALL times, not hauled down at nightfall.
    I actually HAVE the (alleged) White Star burgee from the 3rd BRITTANIC (the GEORGIC's sister ship). It's a big'un (I never measured it), and has a big red stain on the star. It's made of a rough material (perhaps burlap, or some rough cloth?).

    My step father is a Master Mariner, and was in the Merchant Navy for 50 years, and for his retirement he bought a 60ft motor yacht. On the few occasions that I sailed with him he flew the Red Ensign alongside the Welsh flag (we mostly sailed around my then home city of Swansea). I always assumed that the Welsh flag was for my mother, who is Welsh, but I now realise that it was because we were sailing in Welsh waters.

    As I recall you don't fly flags at night on shore unless they are lit by a bright light.
    I wonder if this is the case for the Titanic not hosting any flags at night.

    • @wayneantoniazzi2706
      @wayneantoniazzi2706 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Possibly, however it may have been more to save wear and tear on the flags. No point flying the flags at night if there's no-one to see them.
      Anyway, it's not obligatory to fly the national ensign all the time when at sea. The ensign DOES have to be flown when approaching other ships or harbors.

    The ferry to one of the five Dutch islands has the same design going forward as going back. This is very useful, as the ships don't have to be turned around when coming in to dock, and the cars can just drive on and off with no issue. But it leaves one problem: no good place to fly the Dutch flag. So the designer of the ship wanted to avoid it looking like a barge - his words - and on the bridgehouse in the middle of the ship, it has a system to raise and lower flags when docked, so that the Dutch flag is always flying towards the stern.
    This is pure vanity, of course. It is an extremely complicated and expensive solution to a problem that doesn't really exist, but at the same time, it is kinda cool.

    As a former U. S. Navy petty officer I remember some of the rules about flags, most of which you covered. On U.S. Navy ships in port the U. S. Flay, the Ensign is flown on the stern. On the bow is flown the jack. In my time that was the blue field of stars on the US Flag. I believe at least some ships fly the "Don't Tread on Me" flag with a snake dating from the Revolutionary War. When at sea the Ensign is flown from a mast, usually near the signal bridge. The signal flags showing the ship's call sign were always flown when under weigh in port, entering and leaving. This was flown from one of several halyards handled at the signal bridge. Other flags would be flown to denote the presence of a pilot and other operations such as refueling and taking on ammunition. Not much different from your description of British merchant ship practices.

    • @wayneantoniazzi2706
      @wayneantoniazzi2706 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The "Don't Tread On Me" flag was revived during the Bicentennial years of 1975-1976. I know, I was THERE!. (USMC) Post-1976 the 50-star jack was reinstated.
      However, as I understand it the "Don't Tread On Me" jack was revived after 9/11/2001 when the War on Terror began. It was in use until 2019 when the 50-star jack was reinstated. By the way, the 50-star jack is properly called the Union Jack!
      You know, John Paul Jones didn't like the rattlesnake flag, it gave him the creeps! Personally I LIKE it! Much better than the 50-star jack, very dramatic and historic. If it was up to me I'd make it permanent.

    The White Ensign of the RN, the Red Ensign of the merchant service, and the Blue Ensign were all originally RN ensigns, denoting seniority within a flag rank, and which mast it flew on determined the flag officer's rank. (mizzen for rear adm, fore for vice and main for Adm.) Blue-red-white was the seniority order of the ensigns. All ships assigned to that ADM would fly that color ensign on the stern.

  • @johnbeauvais3159
    @johnbeauvais3159 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    During Olympic’s military service, would she have still been flying the red ensign or would she have received a different flag to denote armed merchant service?

    • @wayneantoniazzi2706
      @wayneantoniazzi2706 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a good question, and it's an "It depends" situation.
      If Olympic was being operated by Royal Navy personnel and taken into service as "HMS Olympic" it would have flown the Royal Navy's White Ensign. If chartered by the British government but manned by a White Star crew it would have flown a Blue Ensign. Operated as a commercial ship only it would have flown a Red Ensign unless as Mike stated it carried a number of RN reservists as part of the crew, then it would have rated a Blue Ensign.

      Sounds like you saw a photo where either one "dressed ship." Sometimes dressing ship is done for national holidays, or when a ship makes it's first visit to a port as kind of a salute and "How do you do?" to that particular port. Dressing ship is only done in port, never at sea. I don't know about commercial ships but the US Navy and Royal Navy have a particular sequence for the signal flags when dressing ship. It dosn't spell out any message though.

British flags of the time were made of wool which is quite durable but consdering the VERY hostile environment two-and-a-half miles down I wouldn't be optimistic.

    I knew she had signal flags, of course, but all the others were news to me. I always wondered what the point of that line connecting the mast and the first funnel was.
    I do have a question: did Titanic, and, in general, other ships, only carry one set of signal flags? I know they can be used as letters, but constricting yourself to only one letter is a bit too restrictive, I would think.

      While each signal flag corresponds to one letter or number combinations of the same are used to form a "shorthand" message or signal. If a shorthand version isn't in the signal book the flags can be used to spell out a complete message.
      Single signal flags when flown by themselves also have a shorthand message such as "I am turning to port/starbord" or "I need assitance" and so on.

    Very informative, however may I respectfully point out that the lines described as 'Haliyards' are in fact halyards and that the naval rank mentioned is pronounced 'Left-tennant' in the Royal Navy and not lieutenant, as in the US Navy (unless I'm mistaken, if so please accept my apologies). Also Mike looks incredibly tall in the comparison shot. An I missing something there too?

    Curious.... you pronounced lieutenant the American way rather than British. Is that how it's pronounced in Australia or did you do it so as to not confuse your US viewers?

    • @wayneantoniazzi2706
      @wayneantoniazzi2706 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm not sure but I think ONLY the British Army uses the pronunciation "leftenant," the Royal Navy pronounces it "lootenant." No-one really knows why the British Army pronounces it the way they do, although a camp diagram from the Engish Civil War of the 17th Century might give a clue. A line of tents pictured on the diagram are called "The Levetenant's Tents."

    • @wayneantoniazzi2706
      @wayneantoniazzi2706 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not possible at all, there were too many open spaces such as the engine room that couldn't be divided into watertight compartments. And that's without figuring in any possible hull damage caused by the breakup itself.

    I have in the past had to painstakingly correct someone who believed that the tail end of the 'King of the World' scene in the 1997 film showed 'Titanic' flying 'an Australian or New Zealand flag'. This same person believed they 'knew' the correct ensign 'Titanic' should have been flying. Sigh...

    • @wayneantoniazzi2706
      @wayneantoniazzi2706 ปีที่แล้ว

      The best explanation of why Titanic has such a grip on the collective imagination as opposed to any other disaster is because unlike a plane crash it was a slow-motion disaster. Instead of happening in a matter of minutes it took two and a half hours. There's an awful lot of human interest stories that happened in that amount of time. Among other things of course. The personal stories are what grabs people's attentions and imaginations more than anything else.
