I’m so glad you’re talking about this! I love the romance aspect Cassandra Clare writes in the Infernal Devices, but Tessa didn’t deserve either of them :/. I feel like her one personality trait was liking books, and that fell flat for me :/

I actually have been in a romantic V twice in my life - and it is never as glamorous as in the books, it just hurts. I acted stupidly based on reading about them the first time, I acted stupidly the second time because one of the guys manipulated me into trying to date him (he recognises that, we were teenagers and we are still friends but it was toxic back then). Oh, and my first boyfriend made me believed no one will ever love me which played into my low self-esteem so I felt like I couldn't afford to refuse anyone. That being said, a lot of the weird stuff in YA fantasy doesn't bother me as much - I feel a disconnect to a lot of those things as they can never happen in real life. (Like Edward leaving Bella - manipulative, kinda abusive, definitely shitty. However, in the context of him and his family low key wanting to murder Bella actually understandable - never in real life though. And even in the books he could have done it differently, but that is a different story.). I feel as contemporary romance is worse because it romanticises exactly what can and does happen and there is no barrier there. I think it can be best exemplified by comparing Fifty Shades to Twilight.
1.) In defense of authors, sometimes pantsers end up with random love triangles. Speaking from experience. 2.) The Twilight TikTok, a.k.a., "When Luckie went so scorched earth on Twilight I thought she was Blade in disguise..." 3.) Immortal vs. Mortal Love Triangles--This comes up in fantasy often (see elves with humans), so what is the appropriate behavior if you live for centuries and your partner dies? I feel like a year or two of waiting is okay. And I'll hush now. :D
