  • After hundreds of hours of work over 14 months, this is an improvement of 4:20 over the previous UV-Speed TAS: 14:02 by RamboBones, made in 2006. This is a fully built tool-assisted speedrun, every input for each of the 22,641 frames was entered manually and individually using XDRE.
    Doomworld post: www.doomworld....
    TasVideos.org submission, including very lengthy comments: tasvideos.org/...
    Special thanks to Zero Master for doing the map 08 glide, and helping me with all sorts of things.

      I was pretty happy with how that turned out even though I'm not sure it really saves any time since you can just rocket off of the wall anyway, but the imp does help me gather some momentum and slingshot over to the rockets before the key grab. But the important part is it looks cool :) Thanks shock, I'm so happy it's done!

    Absolutely. Insane. I never would have imagined Doom 2 could go sub 10, even tool assisted. I was really excited to see what the final time would be after I saw the first half of this project, but sub 10... never in my wildest dreams. This has come a long way since Budko's original TAS run. Honestly man, thank you so much for the time and effort you put into this. I genuinely watched this 5 times before I felt composed enough to comment on it properly. @almostmatt1tas  2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      As Rocky said I'm not the one to have come up with the idea, there are people far smarter than me that have been thinking about the route for this game for a long time! There are two instances I'm aware of where it kinda-sorta-almost happened, but this demo is the first to successfully fully pull it off.
      - Another TASer, xepop, came very close to managing the jump in an abandoned full game TAS. They apparently made the distance, got the right angle, but *barely* didn't manage to land on the ledge at the other side. Without having seen the demo I'm assuming that they briefly touched the platform but had too much momentum in a direction away from it, so then they were thrown off it on the next frame.
      - Another TASer, Vita, managed the trick but using a custom edited map and running with turbo speeds. Turbo speed allows you to get the speed I got with a rocket boost simply by running, and by editing the map they could manually place a cacodemon in the exact right spot for them to wallrun against it. In this way they proved to me that, ignoring the uncomfortable fact that you need to mess with manipulating the position of multiple enemies while timing your firing and running correctly, it WAS theoretically possible to actually pull of.

      With the currently known strategies and routes I think mid/high 9:3x would be possible, anything lower than 9:35 would start to quite surprise me. The biggest question for me is how much faster the map 29 jump can be done, I honestly have no idea, but it can absolutely be done faster and I believe that that's the biggest variable in estimating a truly optimal time.

    It's always so scary watching TAS runs.
    It makes one feel, as a human player, that one is completely overshadowed by the machine's efficiency and effectiveness. At the same time, though it is indeed a person controlling the machine, it operates in such a radically inhuman way that it's hard to discern this; instead, in practice it looks like it's a fully artificial consciousness, playing the game.
    Very creepy.

    This is incredibly satisfying, perfect moves all the time :D What happened in map 7 Dead Simple? How that exit worked? and map 30 how did you hit Icon of sin? Or maybe I shouldn't ask -> MAGIC that's all

    • @almostmatt1tas
      @almostmatt1tas  2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Thanks! :) It's possible to get into a very precise position and press a switch from the left side of it, from further away than you're normally able to press a switch. On the last frame of map 7, the switch I'm facing isn't actually the one I press, it's the one facing to the right. It's possible non-TAS but a TAS is able to do it instantly. The trick is also done in 4 other maps.
      In map 30, I manipulate luck so that the Icon Of Sin spawns a Pain Elemental. When they then fire a Lost Soul towards me, I shoot a rocket towards the Lost Soul. If I do it right, autoaim kicks in and angles the rocket very slightly upwards towards the exposed brain of the IOS while still missing the Lost Soul.

      Rocket splash damage isn't rng based - it's just the distance of the target and the explosion, meaning you can get both rockets to deal maximum splash damage to the icon, killing it in two rockets.

    10:37 using that lost soul to aim at the icon is genius.

    • @almostmatt1tas
      @almostmatt1tas  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interestingly, in a TAS setting diagonally running actually significantly increases your likelihood of finding input combinations that can result in an instant glide. Being able to define a forward movement value, a sideways movement value and turning value gives you significantly more potential locations to end up in when compared to just moving straight forward and turning. Most of the time, including this particular instance, TASes can get glides efficient enough to actually gain speed as you do them. :)
      Totally different situation non-TAS, of course!

    • @rocky47251
      @rocky47251 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Pretty much, but because the other wall is also diagonal it requires a very precise position to get into while building momentum. The trick was found by Zero Master, who has a great explanation of it in his video showcasing the trick. Here’s the link th-cam.com/video/fI-Skyu1jyI/w-d-xo.html

    What's the tech behind all the monster/wallrun/voidclip stuff? The basics aren't very new at this point I think, but the sheer number of them is new. And like, the one at 6:23 doesn't even charge a wallrun, what's going on there? Well, I see velocity going up quickly for a few tics, but then it explodes past 40 if I'm seeing this right?
    (Also, I take it, velocity is map units per tic? So the 32-wide player can clip with velocity like that.)
    Great work!

    • @almostmatt1tas
      @almostmatt1tas  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I'm writing up a tasvideos.org submission post which will go into more detail about every trick and I'll link that when it is done, but here's an explanation for just the map 18 clip, the one around 6:23. The trick takes advantage of two facts of movement in the Doom engine:
      - Running into 'things' including enemies allows you to keep and even gather additional momentum (but generally only up to the regular speed limit of roughly 23 units/frame). Because "momentum" and "distance travelled" are distinct things, it's possible to run against an enemy and even though your location is not changing, your momentum value remains high. (Another clear example of this type of thing is momentum preservation tricks against opening doors.)
      - Running into diagonal walls is somewhat of a dice roll in that the majority of the time your momentum will just die, but very occasionally and in ideal circumstances, the engine will freak out, make a mathematical error and give you much more momentum. In a TAS, we have the control to ensure the outcome is good, but it's quite precise and hard to do well even with tools.
      For this clip, both happen at once. I wedge myself between the enemy and the diagonal wall just in front of the door. Running at the correct angle against the diagonal wall in the right way gives me much more momentum, but since the enemy is blocking me I don't actually move and crash into a door or wall and lose my speed, and since I'm running into a 'thing', I simply gain much more momentum.
      The player is, as you say, 32 units wide but the door is also 8 units wide, meaning if I got perfectly close to the door when I began gaining massive momentum I would need a momentum value of 40 units/frame. Several problems arise: if I get too close to the door during the setup, I actually move past the hitbox of the enemy and all the above stuff fails, and so I needed to optimise how close I could get to the door while still being in contact with the enemy, which of course changed its random behaviour and movement patters, AND it's slightly moving while I'm gathering momentum, so the solution to keep the enemy in place was actually to shoot and kill it but that also needed to be timed perfectly. I ended up getting 'stuck' about 3.8 units away from the door and managed to move 46.2 units in one frame, so this only worked by about 2.4 units.
      As nuts as that all is it's actually possible non-TAS! It basically involves just running into roughly the right spot and hoping it just sorts itself out, which IMO makes it even cooler :) Check this out: th-cam.com/video/L5OFfJbClxM/w-d-xo.html

    0:11 how? Is that the tool-assist? It takes me forever to do that. Nice job btw.

      Yep, glides can be done instantly and without losing any speed with the help of TAS tools :) Thanks!
