Yamahas CP2 is stupidly reliable and low maintenance and a much larger dealership presence for ease of service (At least in U.S.).

@federico giordani Since Aprilia, Ducati and all the italian bikes, dealership would be a lot easier in their own country. As for my country, getting a replacement parts for aprilia, mv agusta or ducati will be a few weeks order. Italian bikes are like exotic bikes according to my people. It will turn heads definitely especially mv agusta as it is a rare sighting.

11 Dlrs in the US - Eleven. I love the bike, but that's just not even close to where it should be. That will me zero parts service, very poor @ the least.(parts guy for 12 yrs, trust me). If they would treat their dealers better, as I've heard nothing but horror stories from anyone that has dealt with them, here and in UK from what I'm seeing, then I'd consider it. Not a Yam guy but the T7 is an amazing package for $10k here in the US. C'mon Aprilia, get it together and I'll buy one.

While the CP2 is a wonderful motor, no one will state the obvious: the deep sump places it too high in the frame, forcing the fuel tank even higher. The T7 is terrific, but correcting this fundamental flaw in an adventure chassis gives the Tuareg a great step up. Let's see if the rest of the bike can pull off the whole package.
I dissagree. The top part of the fuel tank on the aprilia is a "dummy" made of plastic.... it actually sits lower in the frame than it looks.👍😉
The completely clear windscreen is actually very nice 👌.
If riding slow technical stuff, it definitely helps to quickly spot tire line .

Since it seems that every motorcycle brand wants to follow the steps of Yamaha with their T7, I believe that Triumph could make a bike that looks just like their current scrambler but lighter, cheaper, more agile and with way less tech, you know, a gorgeous and honest scrambler.

I love my Tuono 660 2k miles in, but at its current rate of oil consumption the engine would struggle to go on any kind of adventure without an aux oil tank! These engines seem to be teething heavily so hopefully the issues are fixed by the Tuareg's release.

I have a Tuono with 800km on the clock and have not noticed any oil issues. First service in a month and will see.

Nice one Bob, as always. Tenere provided the most important thing that was missing from our lives, simplicity. That is more than enough reason for me to buy one. Unfortunately, we don’t get it here in India.

Yamaha is adamant on that account. No mid- higher segment bikes unless they expect demand. 150& 250 is their focus for now. They gauge demand from competitors and would wait for market to mature. 3-4 years is the least we can expect.
Yamaha truly has disappointed the tourer community in india...

Tuareg 660 with tubeless rims, 240 mm suspension is already a winner over Yamaha. Try removing tyre from wheel with tube in middle of nowhere...to repair a puncture.
Adventure bike with tubeless rims...with spoke wheels is recipe for wide horizon journeys, we all cherish !

Agree with you , on paper the Tuareg in several areas appears better than the Yam which to be fair is a good solid bike but needs a little money spending on it , 90% of the time these things will be on the road and occasional low level off-road use - tubes are not needed and bloody dangerous on any road bike , I would never buy another tube bike or ride one after a couple of close calls in the past running tubes , not funny if you pick up a nail at speed full loaded - they deflate fast were a tubeless set up with good tyre sealant or just the tyre rubber itself is self sealing and will hardly ever give any nasty surprise - sealant is almost useless in tubes with any sharp embedded object stuck in the tyre - you end up with a tube resembling a tea bag in no time , Tubeless all the way for many good reasons and I would have no issue doing hardcore off-road with tubeless , I use TL on my EMTB in extremely rocky conditions and have done with my last KTM 990 with no issues whatsoever and I do ride at quite a good level to challenge things .

When you are in the middle of nowhere you want tube tires. Tubes can be patched and i can carry a LOT of tubes i cannot carry lots of spare tubeless tires and i WILL NOT have my health and safety rely on tire plugs in places without hospitals or clean running water because my front tire exploded in the sahara and i broke my hip when 400 lbs moving 60mph lands on me

Now I'd like to see a Sport-Touring Version of the Tuareg (as competition to the Tracer 7) and I'm sold.
I've owned a t7 for about 18 months now, a lot of MUST DO'S to make it the bike I thought I was buying, but pretty happy with it, just wondering how much the Tuareg will need to get up to scratch after purchase???
As far as looks go, hmmm pretty even to my eye, the Tuareg is pretty sharp tbh, exhaust,crash bars and other accessories should add to the look, can't wait to see one in Australia!!
If I was in the market for an adventure bike, reliability would be 1,2 and 3 on my list of things to look for.
It´s interesting how significant the front of an adventure bike is for the overall design. That is where Yamaha excelled with the T7 and where KTM is still struggling with the out of date transformer concept. Was expecting more from Aprilia but an after market rally tower could do the trick just as for the KTM Adventure models. Interesting bike all together though.
I have a 1200xe and you do not need all the tech. It’s too much, it’s just more shit that can go wrong.

For me the headlight is the single worst feature of the Tuareg. I love everything this bike brings to the table but for me the headlight might be a deal-breaker because I hate the looks lol

The headlight looks fabulous on the Aprilia. Very futuristic, something like a robot. The fuel tank on the Aprilia looks more in line with an adventure bike too, but looks are subjective, and I would not base my choice on the looks. They both look great. I think price will be decisive. The anti squat feature on the Tenere, and if they have a slipper clutch. Slipper clutch was not mentioned, so what about it?
I believe both have anti-squat (Aprilia copied Yamaha on all the positives), and slipper clutch. The reviewer here is obviously biased in favor of the Tenere, which is inferior in all aspects except reliability. And then one hopes the Aprilia is not far off in reliability, but only time will tell.
Yamaha T7 for me. But i think it is good for us riders to have competition. The exhaust is the worst but that’s the same om the T7.

Hardly. Every T7 in the Phoenix area has a ridiculous value held when it comes to dealerships. Example, a T7 came in from a rental company located a town away from new dealer with 13,400 miles, scratched to hell, no brake pads left & worthless tires . They have to charge tax a second round on it’s sale pushing 850$give or take & other fees that are almost the equivalent to the shipping & setup fee buying brand new. Bash power sports in Mesa AZ wanted & wouldn’t budge to sell 10,000 + all the other taxes & fees. Get out of here. Kick rocks & people need to hold out before they spend that much on these giant dirt bikes. Seriously!! 300$ below MSRP?🤦♂️ as much as unwanted that bike & it’s lack of availability here state side, I would never give a dealership the pleasure of price gouging me like that.
Hope it has an actual usably wide-spread beam pattern and the hi-beam without sacrificing the low-beam brightness.
most modern mass production bikes are very reliable. the Aprilia engine is far more compact than the cp2 will ever be, hence it will be a very narrow bike vs the tenere t7. Airbox design and cross spoked wheels are again things where Aprilia takes the cake. Also, unlike Yamaha , Aprilia is always known to use top quality components
Tenere 700 wins it in all main categories for me, I love knowing exactly how it reacts everyday without electronic intervention to interfere, but understand there's a crowd that would like hand holding.

Hand holding? Yeah? That's the only thing T700 fans have to say. Yeah, you need cruise control for 500km ride because nobody is willing to F-up their wrist just to prove that they don't need hand holding. Same goes with cornering ABS, ride mode...etc it's like saying my ancient Nokia 3310 phone is the way to go in 2021 because texting with smartphone is considered hand holding. Technology is the way to go, only Japanese manufacturers are stuck in 70s and don't want to cut a bit of their profit by adding a simple throttle by wire.

@@dionoliveira4058 maybe it does.. you say you know exactly what the bike will do without electronics - ok but you cannot break better / react faster to locking wheels than the computer .. in emergency situations you either waste potentially lifesaving meters or you lock up. Professionals admit that they have trouble to get a bike stopped faster with ABS off than with the ABS on.

If you have ever ridden hard in the dirt you know that controlled sliding is very much part of mastering riding in dirt and that all experienced riders prefer no interference from electronics in this area. It is after all more for offroad than it is for the tar. When you read someone elses opinion and it goes against your thoughts/experience first see if there's something there perhaps you learn before you just go on blah blah blah
Both are great bikes. Just make sure all the parts are available and easy to get in your region.

The Aprilia has more suspension travel, while having more ground clearance and a lower seat hight
I'm looking at the Tuareg 600 ($11999), The Tenere 700 ($10299), and the KTM 790 Adv R (used $12000). I really like the Aprilia but there are a few design quirks, and I wonder about parts availability and reliability.
The engine being "detuned" to 80 hp from 100 is hopefully a good indicator that it should last well. seems like the suspension etc. is a notch above the T7. I like the tech. I like the look of the Aprilia more than the T7 but not much more. The Aprilia has a 275 mile range which is at least 75 miles better than the T7...
I feel like I'm slowly convincing myself to pay a little extra an go one way here.
Very few Aprilia dealers in my area of the USA. Nearest is 200 miles away. Closest Yamaha dealer is 8 miles away and three more within 75 miles. That's why I'd buy a T7 before the Aprilia, sorry to say.
I'd love to see you do a vid on bikes for new riders. There's alot of content out there for the US, but I think your UK perspective would help mature riders looking to get started (like me) make an informed decision. The feedback I got on questions to the crusty old hands running the Direct Access course didn't exactly fill me with confidence. They basically told me to buy a 1000cc or higher, for my first bike... surely this isn't a good idea... or perhaps it is? I'd love to see your input on the topic.
No that is a terrible idea and that man that has told you that should not be put in a position of being a authority on the subject.
It's doable, though maybe not recommended. Like you say, most channels are based in the US where training is pretty limited and jumping on a 1000cc with barely any experience and limited training is a pretty bad idea.
In the UK though, after typically 6 months riding on a CBT, and probably 20-30 hours of DAS training, a 1000cc bike is at least going to be more approachable. However it's probably not a bad idea spending some time on something between 600-900cc with

Anyone buying one of these bikes for a round-the-world ride would choose the Yamaha. Tubeless tyres might sell the Aprilia to some people.

Cycle World have ridden the bike and there is a video, the front looks so much better in the video, I was surprised how much better the front was with the lights on.

@motobob any updates on your review now that you have ridden the Tuareg 660 and know the price? Your review is spot on and the headlight is the only big miss (plus perceived reliability) on the Tuareg. Torn between the two. US based where the T700 is less expensive by $2k
Actually these 2 bikes shouts a lot of a true adventure bikes. Both are great for the category. The only problem is the front fender. It should be below the headlights like the ones in the Dakar closer to the front tyre, you know what I mean. This is the one manufacturers must consider to change.
Triumph Tiger Sport doesn’t really come off-road ready like the T7.
The only thing I would like on my T7 is cruise control.
Yeah I just bought a low mileage tiger 800 for the same reason. Tempted by a new T7 for a similar price but cruise was the difference
The front 2-pot brakes are exactly what you want on the dirt. They're not down-speced for price.
Hey I love the review... But what is it that is great about the touareg other than the TFT display and ride modes...
Plus I don't think we have enough time done on the touareg done yet to say how the TCS is and how this chassis flexes..
I'm not doubting aprilias abilities but just saying it is not time tested at all

The Tuareg looks like the Tenere, for good reason. Aprilia took a play from the Yamaha playbook. I agree that the frontend falls short on the Tuareg. It should have an additional echelon.

Unfortunately it’ll cost way too much with the tech compared to the Yammy & of course there’s the enviable dealership support. It certainly looks to a nod from the past & does look good. Otherwise, a great intro.
The problem with the T7 (I've got one) is that it's too top heavy...the center of gravity is too high. If your off road on slower more technical terrain it's very easy to have that tipping over feeling. It's a great road bike though but I'm still going to sell it.
What is it’s replacement going to be? Something more off road focused?

Unless ur a newbie, you don't really need different mapping on a 66o, so paying for that on this bike really doesn't pan out, I would say that the Cruise Control is a plus for those longer slabs to the off road section, and as far as the longer suspension goes, I ride off road in Arizona with my Tenere, and I haven't needed the extra travel. and if the forks use the same 20mm pistons as the KYB's in the Tenere, they will be the week link in pushing the toureg harder off road. I am keeping my money with the Tenere.
What part of AZ are you in? Still waiting on a T7 but have been entertaining a Tuareg recently. I’m in Payson. Great area for adventure.

I can't get why some people would think that tubes wheels can be a advantage! Marketing for Yamaha, nothing else.
Let's look a facts:
-The 660 is higher on power and torque
-Larger fuel tank
-Lighter(Considering lower centre of gravity and larger fuel tank)
-Better suspension with more travel,
-Has tubeless wheels
-Lower centre of gravity,
-Better brakes (not breakers off of MT07)
-Has cruise control, ride mode, throttle by wire, TC
Tenere 700 advantages?
-None apart from it's mythical reliability.
-larger dealer network
Hi Bob - been watching this 2 ur old vid again - I’ve just bought the Tenere - I live the bike a lot was almost going to buy the toureg but a new Yamaha dealer opened 5 mins from my house - so that was the clincher - Tenere it has to be .
Only problem is , I assumed the tyres were tubeless like the toureg .
So question is - apart from taking the back wheel of at the road side - how can I fix a puncture woukd foam and a plug work - or is there a conversion that can be done to the rims to make them air light
If not - I’m getting rid and getting a toureg - at 62 yrs I just can’t be bothered with the hassle. What do you advise Bob . Mr Whisky M8 out! 🥃
Brain says: T7. Heart says: buy Tuareg.
Wallet says: Just keep riding my V-Strom untill it reaches 300 000kms.
And if it is like my Wee-Strom, you will still get 30% of MSRP when you do sell it.

A lack of dealerships, suspect reliability will hold it back. Personally I like the headlight looks though.
Pretty early to say really, since nobody has even seen a production version of the Tuareg, let alone flog it down the trail for a week or two.

Don't worry, T700 feels heavier than 1250gs because of it's crazy high centre of gravity.

It's not quite that bad, I doubt poll taris could do the Seeker film on a 1250GS or use it for hard enduro.
I test drove an tuono and the first 15 mins all the electrics blew mate and it was so uncomfortable my nuts were sore

My Aprilia Pegaso Strada 650 is nearly on 30,000 miles and I hoped that Aprilia would get this out soon. I'm in if, the build quality matches my 09 plate Pegaso

Well I test rode an RS 660 that had a top end knock straight from the factory so it's the T7 for me. (i love the older Gen 1 millies and tuonos though) also the Turaeg headlights only a mother could love
T700 does NOT have front wheel Off-switchable ABS, contrary to what you claim at 5:20
In the USA I’d still go with the Yamaha just because there’s more of them for repairs and parts alone access
Reliability, price, part availability, dealer network, simplicity will be notably inferior. Won't be dethroning the T7 anytime soon.

I' ve not had any problems in urban areas getting my aprilias fixed or serviced by any garage. APRILIAS ARE GREAT BIKES. Can't wait to try this one.👍😘
I recently bought a T7 because I wasn't to fond of theTuareg, looks. However its growing on me, especially on full hooligan enduro looks.
The front light is so pretty much better than Tenere, I would buy Aprilia Tuareg over Yamaha Tenere
No you wouldn't - you'd test-ride both, preferably back-to-back, and make your decision from there. Or are you really telling me you choose a bike based on aesthetic properties of its headlight? I kind of hope so because that would be new levels of stupid the internet has revealed to me.

They seemingly wanted to keep the "double V" on the lights. And I cannot blame them. But obviously this looks bad on the adventure bike frame.
IMHO:
If they wanted to keep the "V"-s so badly maybe they should have let'em be much bigger. Run to the top of windscreen, even? Or maybe the other way round, put them inside the light bulbs, like a fake filament?.. Just scaling them down was a lame idea.

Avoid the triumph tiger. My mate bought one new and the base of the downpipes rotted through in 18 months. The replaced them for free but he wasn't happy.
Those lights would be a deal breaker for me.

You hit the nail on the head about the Tuareg looks. The headlight is just… weird imo. If the Aprillia looked like those concepts you showed. it would be a toss up for me.

I only had one engine that blew up. It was Japanese.

Thing is, if you’re really gonna take these bikes to some real tough off-roading and long tour, you might want a more reliable brand and less electronics to potentially fail. Aprilia and Italian manufacturers in general might not excel in the reliability department, to be honest.
Also, dealer network and parts availability worldwide make it a no brainer to pick the T7 as the adv bike of choice.

Hello, I test rode the T7 2021 and Tuareg 2022 and right away the T7 seemed more fit for purpose of a pure ride, it's a "get up and go" machine that you can figure out while waiting for green light on your way to adventure. While with Tuareg I keep staring at the LCD screen with million settings and colours and information overload, not paying attention to the road. Also, Tuareg felt flimsy and small, mind you I am over 6ft and 200lb+.
