The stencil shadows were already cut from the engine before Bungie compiled the build shown at E3. That version of the game used high quality shadow maps for the lighting, hence why this port is able to look a lot closer to the original build from 2003.

The Halo 2 we never got
As a kid I was so much more excited at the idea of defending Earth than the story we got. I still think Halo 1 was the best single player.
