- This is a 1932-33 HMV 102 in blue, one owner from new, mint condition, complete with box, record tray and lid locking key. This is all original condition.
How wonderful to see that someone has preserved the box and gramophone for so many years.
Yes indeed. Yet the only sad thing is that occurences like this get more seldom every year.
Really amazing how someone even retained the original carton box, and in this condition! I guess the box might be worth more, looking from collectors' viewpoint, than the thing itself, as most of these boxes must have been thrown out or burned the same year the gramophones were bought :)

A magnificent gramophone ! Keep it preciously, only a few 102's are still in that condition !
That is so beautiful. There used to be one more type. High wooden box with a big brass horn . Same as is seen on HMV Records.
Must have been put in storage. Right after it was bought. Love that record,
this should belong in a museum or used in movies. either way i love it.

What would be the expected cost of 102 as clean as this model?
@@bernadette607 The last time I looked on eBay similar 102s that had sold from reputable gramophone sellers were upto £475 but I have never seen one as good condition as this, and I've never seen one with the box, but I would never sell it anyway.

That’s a very good price for such a beautiful machine. I have my dad’s 102. I had it rebuilt by a carpenter! I think he ripped me off big time. Crazy cost & still doesn’t work.
. I am now thinking of sending it to Co Cork to a proper gramophone guru, in the hope he might it into proper working order. He is willing to work on it for me.
. I adore those beautiful 102 beauties. I have all dad’s 78’s I hope I will get to listen to them again.

How many plays can you get from a needle... im asking for a friend.
It depends on the needles, originally they were designed for one play each and would be bought in a tin with maybe 250 needles in, but later needles were designed to play up to ten records each. Unless they are valuable 78s I just play until the sound deteriorates, can often get 4 or 5 plays from a needle.
you should only play one record per needle! if you use a needle more then once you will damage the record! Needles are still made. 78 RPM records are not!
@@victrolalover7795back in the late 50s thru the sixties hit records were released on both 45 and 78 rpm. The combination needles would flip from "45-33" to "78". Did those needles damage the 78s, resulting in the hiss when the 78s were played?
@@bsmith9506 No, I am speaking of gramophone needles and records being played on gramophones. The gramophone was specifically designed for one play needles because of the heavy reproducers. (kind of. some different variations could play more but I will not get in to that.) The record players you talk of are different record players with much lighter tone arms and needles made of different materials. The hiss you hear is just the fact that 78s were pressed on shellac, and that material has a background hiss that vinyl does not.

Hopefully in time I will, unfortunately I hardly get the time to use it, though would never part with it.
There isn't that much to be done on a 5a/5b soundbox. One good investment is to replace the back rubber with a new one (repros available on ebay). Otherwise, you must have carful hands and dismantle it to check if the needlebar is still free moving. It might need oiling a bit, or readjustment if it is too stiff. Ideally, it should be done with the needlebar unsoldered, so you can also be assured when you solder it back that you put it parallel to the soundboxe's back plate. This should be done with a needle in the bar as a reference.

Rather lame to comment on a video that's over 9 years old that I'd forgot I'd made in the days before mobile phones could record HD! I still have the gramophone though, in mint condition, it's rather splendid and I still enjoy using it from time to time. A museum quality piece!!!
