    Some of this is a little too far out. If you're Canadian from the start you know Fort Mac always will has and been the biggest shit hole with the craziest cost of living. Move around Red Deer/Hanna area you're getting a comfy place $900/monthly + furnished. Even a $2000 shack out in the woods. The whole province isn't a shit hole. I guess it depends on who you ask to be apart of the filming.

      @billyjanglenobber5646 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Its obviously not about the whole province, its acknowledging the shit hole that the unsustainable, declining oil industry brings and there will probably be more places like this the more desperate we get.

    no one can deny the fact that the money in the tar sands is amazing, people gotta make money. at the same time no one can deny that it is short term wealth with serious long term repercussions. its another perfect example of how the north american world makes short term "quick money" decisions with short term fixes rather than thinking things out and making money in a smarter more sustainable fashion like they do in Europe.

    If you are curious, work in the industry to see the other side of the equation. I find a lot of people complaining don't work in it, or understand how it works. I use to work in Vancouver at a Bank, before that Hewlett Packard. I then moved to working in the Oil and Gas industry as a Leashand, worked my way up to Derrickhand on a drilling rig/rigs. Now I'm on the Service side. I'm a fluid engineer/mudman and work on many different projects. I see first hand how disposal is cleanly done.

If not, then it's people like you that's ignorant to what really takes place once the mining is completed. Do you own a vehicle, fly, take transit? If so, your just as much to blame for the problem as anyone else is. Everyone should give up their dependent lives on fossil fuels and these places will have to shutdown. Problem solved.

    I don't believe they are outright condemning the oil sands projects in Alberta. Yes, the reporter went looking for the negative effects of these oil sands project in Canada. But you know, a little video and interview in the location that it is at goes a long way. It doesn't encourage me to we should stop this, it just makes me aware that it has the potential to get out of control without proper checks and balances. And the oil dependency talk is far outside the scope of Alberta oil sands.

      At the end of the day it really doesn't matter. If it does indeed support Canada's various welfare programs, what is more important, our welfare programs, or the well being of Alberta's, and the world's environment? That's something that is actually worth some austerity.

    • @rdyjur

      Oil sands currently affects the jobs of 112,000 people across Canada OUTSIDE the province of Alberta. The oil sands industry will pay an estimated $1.5 trillion in provincial ($302 billion) and federal ($574 billion) taxes and provincial royalties ($590 billion) over the next 25 years. In 2011 and 2012, oil sands companies contributed more than $20 million to aboriginal communities in the Wood Buffalo and Lac La Biche regions for school and youth programs, celebrations, cultural events, literacy projects and other community programs.
      I've been in Alberta for 25 years and have had the privilege of working up North for the last 5. Alberta is NOT a "world of poisoned water, polluted air, and rare cancer". I enjoy great air quality, don't know a single person with rare cancer, and truly enjoy Alberta's beautiful outdoors. I've never seen Fort Mac in my life but I do believe that it's fuckin ugly there. The fact is that the part of the province that is strip mined is tiny.
      Since 1967, 761 square km of borreal forrest have been disturbed by oil sands mining. This is an area smaller than New York, Berlin, or London. 0.2 % of Canada's boreal forest can be mined for oil. This land will be reclaimed once the reserves are depleted. Of the 169 billion barrels of oil sands reserves, only 34 million can be accessed through mining. The rest of these reserves will be drilled.

    • @rdyjur
      @rdyjur 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Stephen Prevost
      Oil sands contribute 8.7% of Canada's greenhouse gas emissions and 0.13% of the worlds. 8.7 sounds high but I have personally enjoyed many summers in Alberta's north east and can attest to the fact that there are much more beautiful parts to the province than the tiny fraction that is being mined.

    Then I'm curious, honestly, how do we keep this disposal from affecting fish and other wildlife? It seemed like the rivers were rather polluted. The atmospheric affects are quite obvious too. I live in Kitchener and I can smell sulfur when it rains, and that's just with the cars and industry we have. The further north you go, the more sensitive the environment is. That said, I'd like to know what I'm missing here, because I know I don't have the whole picture here.

    i like looking at my plastic moniter, its my access portal to the wonders of the internet, which in my opinion is a good thing. thats what you mean by staring at your plastic screen right?
    i dont need to try to feel human, i am human and i can control my emotions and how i act accordingly.
    my parents didnt really take a part in my education, i was educated by the state and then later by myself through self study at university. im a geomorphologist and a civil engineer.

    "I have faith in science," says Ralph Klein. Unfortunately, he is scientifically illiterate so he doesn't realize that all the scientists working for the Tar Sands are corrupt. I am a retired engineer so I know how corrupt is engineering. You simply don't get the job if you don't lie for your employer. . It is that way in most engineering jobs in Canada.

    Again - what else could it be?
    It is a piece to expose what people don't know about how dirty the tar sands operations are - whatever label you want to give the journalists or the piece are inconsequential.
    There is no other side to this - it's fucking disgusting and is doing horrible things to the environment.

    matter and mind is inherently linked. mind over matter is no more superior than matter over mind.
    its all ambiguous this idea of mind over matter, if you wanna ask me what i mean when i type matter over mind then why dont you ask?
    calling me a non human plastic blob is hurtful, a good human wouldnt do that to another human, animal, lump of coal, plastic or tree; its hurtful.

    naw breaaaahh i am already somewhere.have you ever considered becoming a guidance couscellor at a high school? it'd be a real nice job,, you might have to stop referring to total strangers as your bros especially when using the term in what i perceive as an unclear and slightly sarcastic remark of encouragement. if you want to say something encouraging to one of your brothers (because i am your brother if we are both sons of god) say it with honour and politeness, por favor.
