- Why did people flee here from China. Welcome to the provincial town of Karakol (Kаракол), in the east of Kyrgyzstan. Karakol was founded as a Russian military outpost in 1869, in what was then the Russian Empire.
Karakol grew in the 19th century after explorers came to map the peaks and valleys separating Kyrgyzstan from China.
In the 1880's Karakol's population surged with an influx of the Dungan people, Chinese Muslims fleeing persecution in Qing Dynasty China. The Dungan people (also known as Hui Chinese), brought with them, their culture, traditions, language and of course cuisine.
Modern day Karakol is the capital of the Issyk-Kul region and the 4th largest city in Kyrgyzstan. It is a diverse mix of ethnic Dungan's, Kyrgyz, Russian's, Uighur's and more. This is reflected in everything from the architecture to the languages you hear and in the food! 🇰🇬

When I was younger I would camp out and take public transportation but now that I’m old I need my own vehicle and a nice hotel room and eating out. It’s terrible I know. I love watching the two of you being so adventurous. I would be scared to stay in Guests houses. You guys do it with such gusto and vigor. I’ve learned so much by watching your channel. And seen places like I’d never be able to see them. You both do such a great job of giving us the history of each place you visit. You both were born to do this. Karakol has a quaintness about it that makes travel worthwhile. What I always love about your videos guys is the way you allow us to experience the town or city as though we were there with you. There are tons of Finnish plastic bags in small corner shops in Russia (especially around Piter). I'm guessing it's a similar story.

On goats which love to "run around and eat"...the place we now live in came with two goats. They had a large enclosed area and were well fed. But ... if they could get out and run around , they certainly ate. Usually they targeted shrubs with the largest price tag.
Haha, they had expensive taste! 😅 It was an incredibly bizzare moment watching someone take two goats for a walk 😁

The Dungan food looks amazing. I have never tried it. I love Uyghur food though and some of it looks similar, like you say about one of the dishes a bit like Laghman.

I don't know how Morrisons bags ended up here in KG. But are kind of brand on their own now, regardless of the chain in the UK. It is a brand of plastic bags here. I think the supplier will keep producing these bags and send to KG with same branding even if the chain in the UK ceases to exist.😀
I have read a similar story about frozen chicken from the US ending up in Kg, that people called "Bush legs" (this was during Bush) but I don't know if that is an urban legend. Can't remember where I read it..

I'm fairly sure the Morrisons bags are actually made in Kyrgyzstan rather than being exported, for some reason that logo has become really popular and has just been copied from Morrisons. Some of them have Kyrgyz written on them and if you are really lucky you might see the very rare different coloured Morrisons bags, red, blue green etc!
All of the ones we got were only written in English and had things like 'Keep Britain Green' written on them 😊
It's scary and also irritating to have to deal with people like that man. You don't know if they're crazy or drunk, and they can get out of control in a heartbeat. Psycho! Loved the house where you got to stay. Very nice.

The only Caucasian countries are Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia, and parts of Russia. Kyrgyzstan ($1,173 GDP per capita) would be a central Asian country. Third poorest after Tajikistan ($859) and Afghanistan ($508).
Kyrgyzstan is still a country where many struggle to make ends meat. Here's to hoping things improve again one day soon🤞🏻
