With this aria Mr Carreras opened the world of opera for me. I can never tell how grateful I am for his performance of this aria. Never heard it better by any other tenor. He gives meaning to this opera and this specific area. Thank you so much for sharing your great voice and talent with us, Mr. Carreras.
Carreras is one of my favorite tenors ( none can surpass Bjorling) and I love his voice and this performance, he died a true operatic death, it took several minutes.

I listened to Pavarotti and Kraus, and they sing it at the end with the full voice, even larger than when they sung the same theme at the beginning of the aria. If he tried to imitate death, he wouldn't walk around with nife stabbed in his chest. I think something else is the case here, not his delibarate adjusting of voice. Nevertheless, I prefer Carreras.
@novice1959 it was a sacrifice :)partly, i am grateful. but if he was able to survive leukemia ,he would have surely been able to keep his full voice (but voice problems + first of all leukemia) were probably too much. but he is so very admirable. i love his edgardo, alvaro.... Without leukemia he would have managed everything. i think leukemia is to blame and we should be grateful he is still able to sing and that he survived. it was such a luck.

It was his technique that did him in, he could have sung some heavier repertoire, but the singing in the throat was only made worse by the fact that he started adding more size to try and be heard over the orchestra.
It was "..NUME IN CIEL.." [complete - "ne congiunga il Nume in ciel. {may God unite us in heaven}. The voice was deliberately adjusted to portray "a last breath".

I don't think there is a beautiful way to destroy a voice, I have almost 50 live Carreras performances, and in many of them it is so upsetting the way he forces and strains that voice.
si il brano è cantato mezzo tono sotto e abbondante, ma non credo che Carreras canti in do diesis maggiore un brano che è stato pensato da Donizetti in re maggiore a caso.. io ho ascoltato tutto il brano e proprio già da quando dice, salendo , la seconda volta" Oh bell'alma innamorata " si sente la voce che tende a non essere più in maschera e peggio ancora quando dice per due volte " il nume in ciel" a conclusione della romanza , in cui le note perdono addirittura lo smalto e per lo stesso motivo . Carreras è stato un magnifico tenore fino a quando non si è dedicato ai ruoli drammatici e in questo brano, che è invece per un tenore lirico , la sua voce , in acuto specialmente, suona pesante e si sente che fa molta fatica a cantare i suoni acuti.... non credo , quindi, che l'essere famoso gli abbia consentito di cantare mezzo tono sotto, mentre penso che la cosa sia stata indispensabile. Aggiungo che cantare per lungo tempo da tenore drammatico significa , purtroppo, perdere la possibilità di cantare, come si deve, da tenore lirico. la saluto
According to you, no tenor other tha Kraus sings anything in Tune. You surely must have Distorted hearing. Down to that Clinic and get your Lugoles tested.

Please, can anybody explain what happend with his voice at the end of the aria - 4:8-4:21? I cannot recognize his voice there.
