Teaching Sharks (and Eels) to Attack Invasive Lionfish

  • If sharks and eels are taught to eat invasive lionfish, they can help lower lionfish population in the Caribbean.
Lionfish are quickly eating and replacing native species of fish in the Caribbean. Their population in the Caribbean has exploded in recent years. This video shows sharks eating lionfish.

I have seen this done many times with sharks and eels as well as big groupers and snappers. Nevertheless, in those areas, you still see lionfish hanging out in the open with all of those other critters swimming around. My conclusion is that they will eat lionfish if someone disables them or puts them in a vulnerable position, but otherwise will wait for the divers to do it. In one place in the Turks & Caicos, the big Nassau groupers will come out to meet divers and take them to the lionfish, pointing them out like bird dogs. They typically select a diver who has something in his/her hand that looks like a weapon, and will try to persuade him/her to go get them a lionfish. I have seen only one instance of a grouper grab an healthy lionfish. That was when i went into a tight little cave and, leaving my attendant grouper at the opening, scared a lionfish out right into the groupers mouth. The grouper seemed quite satisfied with itself, but still followed me around begging me to hunt for more.

Ah I see how predators learn to eat them without their spines getting in the way. Theyre fed the lionfish at a certain angle where they have the spines facing away and their weak spot faced towards the predator. I saw a video of a grouper eating a lionfish that was free swimming and it kept on analyzing it and charged at the weak spot..probably been taught how to eat it

@@justmrcrow Hi Fire, well to gu is enjoying feeding the sharks etc, so how to feed them is how he is doing I guess.
But if you arking how to tech them to search for lionfish, than that is another story.
There is no other way than need, its evolution, they have to be in need of food and they cannot find and learn that way.
Mind you this will take years to be imprinted in sharks etc that lionfish is a source of food. Imagin a shark will find out that lionfish is a source of food, it will procreate but its "kids" have no clue they are born with the "intelligence" to hunt that it was imprinted in them through decades.
This is an addition to that. So guesstimate, heheheh but once food will be scarse they will turn on the lionfish, lionfish is shooting in its own foot by eating everything.
Unfortunately it will take the destruction or many speceis for this to happen. Hope it is clear , m english is not the best.

Reminder that while we know sharks that are even 3/4 our size can mess us up very badly if they attack they actually don't. We can KNOW it's their environment and can outclassed us but they don't know it. For them we are a similar if not bigger, weird new fish, and they don't know if we can bite back, swim better, attack, be venomous etc. That most are very docile, they don't want to push their luck and get injured. Big whites and Tiger sharks are bigger and thus are likely less intimidated, but still think twice before risking it.

You can teach Cattle to eat Thistles, even the Musk Thistle, which in my opinion is the most resilient of the species and most aggressive in my area, it's like crabgrass and foxtail grasses, but a milkweed species, very spiny, but you can teach your cattle to consume it, if they graze it when it goes to flower, they will graze it when it is almost ready to go to seed. You won't be recommended to raise a cow calf operation on it that I'm aware of, so prove me wrong, but milkcow operation at family level can sustain a musk Thistle or two in the grazing process. If you want more information, go to nebraska's department of agricultural bovine development services, or whatever gets you to the UNL ag department and research. I'm personally of the opinion, that I'd rather eat a pig, I love bacon, but I can't eat pork, so I'm stuck with fish, feathers, or cows, or deer, and I haven't hunted caribou, waterbuffalo, ibus, you name it...

Those lionfish don't belong in Atlantic waters, they were brought there by people. The fish has no predators in the Atlantic food chain and eats everything small enough to fit in its mouth, including young fish that should make up the next generation.
Lionfish are spreading like wildfire and killing all native fish in their youth. Sharks and eels are the only predators capable of working around the venomous spines but they would rather play it safe than experiment with this strange new fish.

Does the venom and spines suddenly lose all worthiness??? Can't they directly kill it themselves, or is this video entirely predicated on pre-killed reactions similar to tourism bait feeding? There's no follow-up footage that proves either a shark or an eel has "learned" to eat a lion fish as a direct result of human intervention, versus millions of years of oceanic evolution that otherwise conditioned them not to?

I think this is a great way to introduce new predators to lionfish- but my second thoughts was a negative thing to come from this technique unfortunately is that it also teaches the sharks to come to divers for food, which we all know that teaching wild animals to associate humans with food is dangerous. I hate to say that it could potentially lead to bites by hungry sharks who think that humans = free food.

It was worth a shot. The program stopped four years ago because it didn't have ongoing success. They didn't think about this too well. Sharks will not go underneath the coral looking for lionfish where they hide. The divers were holding them out in the open which is not a natural setting for the fish to be hunted.

Hi, marine biology major here. This is a great example of biological control! The only thing I would say is harmful about this method is that it teaches sharks that humans = food, and lead to sharks biting humans or showing aggression towards humans. Then, people assume sharks are inherently bad or harmful creatures when in reality, we taught them to be that way!! This is why reef sharks tend to swim around/up to divers expecting food from them. I would probably recommend killing the lionfish, releasing them from the spear, and then letting the sharks go at them. That way, there's a degree of separation there.
