    I actually do watch from Saudi Arabia! I’m a Scout guy, but found an ‘83 FJ40 out here that I really want to take home to TX. That’s when I started watching you two! It’s been fun!!

      Both iconic 4wheel drives, to me the scout always felt bloated compared to the 40 series, classic broncos, willys, and others. But when they’re out together right, they are fine looking machines. Thanks for watching, and hopefully you get the 40 back over here.

    Came for the tech... stayed for the sarcasm. And yeah... it hurt deep when you pulled the shrapnel. You just validated my bearing/seal effort with the rear disc conversion. Your sacrifice won’t be forgotten...

    Hehe this axle project has really lived up to the channel name! One method for removing the studs if you don't have a press is to fit a large socket or piece of tube loosely over the head of the studs on the back and back it up with a heavy object like a gympie hammer, then bash the threaded end of the stud into it. It usually gives enough additional support to the axle flange to break them free 👍

  • @62effjay
    @62effjay 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    You need to put the cross pin back in for now and spin the ring gear all the way around to check for busted teeth. Also look inside with a flashlight at the pinion teeth. Have to find the source of those broken bits.

  • @joesixpack7551
    @joesixpack7551 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    you need to spray down those pieces parts with brake cleaner and hold give us some more pics of them. They can only be a few things, since most everything in the axle housing is heavy forged parts, so I'm guessing they are either bearing shims, a part of one of the seals that got knocked into the housing some time in life, or a bearing cage. The one piece you had in your fingertips looked like it had a small 1/8 inch or less hole in it, so I'm guessing it is part of a seal that someone beat loose and it went into the housing. Rachael is right that it is good that you had to tear into it as those parts would have trashed your gears. Also, be sure you put new seals in before you put the axles back in. When you take the old seals out, note the direction as a seal has to be put in the correct way else the seal will not seal. Use a piece of 2by4 block to drive them in, else if you have a socket the same diameter, use that. I would spray the whole thing out with diesel fuel and see if any more chunks of metal stuck in there. If you are not removing the pinion, be careful what you spray in there to clean with. Brake cleaner inside there will likely trash the pinion seal, so use diesel fuel. Get a magnet on a long stick and fish it around in the axle housings and around the gears, be careful not to break the magnet cause it will be sticking to everything in there.

    , But mine you... i never worked much on the older 1970's Toyota stuff..
    But i don't see why you just cant hammer them out.. i have done it at least 3-4 times over the years on petty much everything
    But at the same time i hope you do the seals at least. And at least you got to check out the inside.

When things seem super tough to do, often times you just get to doing it and turns out you could do it all along. Good luck with the rest of the disc brake conversion.
